This is NOT a top-25 team. No way, no how. Top 45 maybe. And Austin Jones is losing weight.

<snip>

Well, at season's end this could be a top-25 team--if the defense improves significantly over the past few years--but I agree it's not likely.

But why is Austin Jones at 5' 10", 190 lbs so concerning?

It's not. He purposely lost it to be more explosive.

Stupid me. I always assumed that runners become "more explosive" by developing lower body strength, as in putting ON muscle weight (quads, etc.). Think Rickey Henderson of base-stealing fame. Thanks for the insight!  (I'll share it with Rickey.)

Well, poking around the Internet shows that Rickey Henderson and Austin Jones have similar height and weight. But maybe the baseball-to-football explosiveness comparison is a bit apples-to-oranges anyways?

But since I think Austin Jones is poised for a breakout year, I love this conversation. I came across this free interview on Rivals from April:

["All we do is sit around here and guess what a bunch of little pricks are gonna go and do out there, then we come back at halftime, and we complain 'cause they didn't do exactly what we thought they'd do. We don't know. Of course we don't know."

Nice one! Is this from Roy Kent in Ted Lasso?

Thanks for posting.  Great interview that is starting to get me excited for football season!  Jones says he has increased his strength in the weight room and has lowered his body fat.  He is also working on breaking tackles more.  Hopefully that means more explosiveness and more plays where he breaks away for longer gains.

Cheers,
Pete F.

You can't generalize based on one player. Billy Hamilton was one of the fastest and most explosive players in MLB, and a top base stealer, with a completely different body type than Henderson. He was listed at 6-0, 160 and always looked skinny. Some players need to lose weight to become quicker and more explosive while others are the opposite.

I remember Jeffrey Hammonds adding weight after his freshman year and looking noticeably thicker which gave him more power, but at the cost of his quickness out of the box and speed around the bases, which had been a big part of his game.

It really depends on your body type and frame as to whether adding or losing weight is going to benefit you; each athlete is different.

if Austin Jones is 5'10" and 190 pounds then according to gostanford he is similar in size to the last year height/weight of

Bryce Love - 5"10" and 202 pounds

https://gostanford.com/sports/football/roster/bryce-love/14001

Christian McCaffrey - 6'0" and 200 pounds
