RE: WVB vs Nebraska - Softball Fan - 09-15-2021

I think Nebraska's 2021 recruiting class is the best ever based on prep recruiting predictions.  Those predictions are extrapolations by coaches about a player's potential over a four year college career. They don't predict how good a player will be in their freshman year and, of course, they don't always turn out to be accurate.

I agree Jamesy. Stanford's 2016 class turned out to be one of the best if not the best. At the start of 2019 Penn State's Russ Rose said it was the best class ever and predicted Stanford would win the NC in 2019.

There are some weaknesses in Nebraska's freshmen.  Batenhorse got picked on mercilessly by opponents' servers in the U20 world national championship.  Nebraska plays #5 Louisville on Saturday.  It will be interesting to see Nebraska's starting lineup for that match.

#5 Louisville and #8 Kentucky are playing right now on ESPNU.   Maybe on Saturday Kentucky will view #16 Stanford as small potatoes after today's big match. (CompSci, does potatoes have an e in the spelling?)

Neither Lougeay or Beaven were highly recruited prep players.  They both have been amazing thus far.

I don't really want to put money on that, but I would put money on this less-experienced team getting better and better as the season goes on.  I'm cautiously optimistic for a deep postseason run.  In Hambly I trust.

It is interesting to note that the match hitting % of freshmen FRANCIS and Nebraska's BATENHORST and KRAUSE - all three were Top 5 nationally ranked recruits from the Class of 2021 - were very similar, with FRANCIS (13/9/46) at .087,  BATENHORST (10/6/41) at .098,  KRAUSE (10/7/34) at .088

Thanks for posting those stats.  Interesting Nebraska kept its two All-American OHs on the bench except as serving subs.  They decided to give the freshmen a chance to show what they can do without fear of being pulled out after a mistake.  It might have cost Nebraska the match.

I'm very optimistic about Francis for the long-term over a college career of four years.  Much more cautious for the short-term.  Here are my observations about Francis hitting in the Nebraska match:
1.) Slow hitting approach.
2.) Doesn't put nearly as much heat on the ball as Kipp and Baird.
3.) Had two short blockers against her during much of the match and wasn't able to go over top of them.
4.) Painfully unprepared at times for the speed of the college game.

When she gets to her senior year I expect Francis to be fantastic.  Right now I see an inexperienced freshman.

During the middle of her freshman season Plummer tweaked her hitting technique and got much better at hitting sets outside her wheelhouse.   At a club tournament I asked Dunning if she figured it out herself or a coach worked with her.  Of course, he didn't give me a direct answer.  At 6'6" if Francis can optimize her hitting mechanics she will be trouble for opponents.

Just perused through Nebraska's current roster....I just found out that they also have the #1 overall recruit from the Class of 2021 in 6'0 setter Kennedi ORR, who did not play vs Stanford last night...and that's on top of #2 overall recruit in 6'4 OH KRAUSE, #3 overall recruit in 6'4 OH BATENHORST, #10 overall recruit in 5'5 Libero RODRIGUEZ, and #16 overall recruit in 6'2 OH LAURENSTEIN, who all started and played extensively for Nebraska vs Stanford...

WOW!  That (Nebraska's 2021 recruiting class) may be the best recruiting class ever to date, with #1, #2, #3, #10, and #16...compare that to Stanford's 2019 #1 recruiting class which had #2 (BAIRD), #3 (KIPP), #5 (XU), and #10 (VICINI) which is pretty close in terms of potential...

Also, all the while I thought MINER was the #1 ranked setter from the Class of 2021 as she came in as the #5 overall recruit....although, she was given the opportunity to be the setter for Stanford (unlike ORR who has to wait another year after HAMES graduates) and is playing like the #1 freshman setter and even considered by some as a Top 5 setter regardless of Class....

Was Stanford's 2019 class better than Plummer, Fitz, hentz, gray, Keefe and Keefe? Obviously in retrospect no, but curious about the recruiting rankings.

If my memory still serves me well, I think PLUMMER and FITZ were ranked #2 and #3 overall, GRAY was ranked in the mid-teens overall, HENTZ was ranked in the mid-20s overall, and Mikaela KEEFE was ranked in the low 30s overall...so yes, the 2019 Class was "better" in terms of relative overall ranking numbers, i.e. 2016 had #2, #3, mid-teens, mid-20s, low 30s vs. 2019 had #2, #3, #5, #10....but Stanford's 2016 and 2019 recruiting classes were both ranked #1 overall....

But, come to think of it, if you disregard the 2020 season, the 2019 Class still have a chance to catch up with the 2016 Class, since both BAIRD and VICINI are currently billed as RS Sophomores and even KIPP who is currently billed as a Junior can technically play two more seasons because of last season's covid-related "dispensation"...the 2019 Class won a National Championship as freshmen, so they only have to make the Final Four this season, then win back-to-back championships over the next two seasons (which I think is very difficult but  possible) to match the accomplishment of the 2016 Class....by the way, it's interesting to note that the great FOLKL-led Freshman Class of 1994 and the great PLUMMER-led Freshman Class of 2016 similarly accomplished a National Champion (freshman) / National SemiFinalist (sophomore) / National Champion (junior) / National Champion (senior) feat, edged out only by the PSU freshman Class of 2006 which won 4 consecutive National Championships....

RE: WVB vs Nebraska - BostonCard - 09-15-2021

Gray was perhaps famously underranked, with some derisively referring to her as the weak link on the team.

I love that she kept that tweet in her back pocket for three years and pulled it out after their last national title.  She might have played with a wee chip on her shoulder.

RE: WVB vs Nebraska - Softball Fan - 09-15-2021

I remember on another board when Gray was in high school someone posted there were four setters in SoCal who were way better than Gray and that she wasn't even in the top ten setters in her class.  For some reason I never seem to forget insults like that.

Kentucky blew a 9-7 lead in the 5th set, giving up 8 straight points to lose the set and the match. So that's a ding on our RPI. UK seems to have a very pin-oriented offense. In comparison, I recall Nebraska's MBs Caffey and Schwarzenbach being the ones who hurt us the most and their pin hitters being much less effective.
In another RPI ding, Florida lost to FSU.

RE: WVB vs Nebraska - johnbar - 09-15-2021

And Florida was upset by Florida State.

As to the question about Nebraska's leggings:  First time I have seen those; no idea what advantage (if any) they might have. (I didn't read all the commentary on VT, but at least some Nebraska fans seemed surprised by them.)

Yes, the plural has an e. The singular doesn't, unless you're Dan Quayle.

Orr has been injured which is why she isn’t playing.  She tore her ACL awhile back and has been having lingering problems.  Prior, she was the top setter with Miner being her back up in the US gym for their age.  In fact, many already labeled Orr the future setter for the US.  There hasn’t been a setter with as much hype coming out of high school since Carlini.  She is really good but curious how she returns from being injured, and if she will be at the same level or if it will have a lingering impact.  If at the same level, she will replace Hames immediately.

RE: WVB vs Nebraska - johnbar - 09-18-2021

BTW, I meant to comment on the Stanford Band being relegated to the upper part arena.
Is that because of covid?  Or they just want to sell the better seats? Or...?
