THAT makes this whole cluster even worse. Glad I had low-bar expectations this season. I got snookered by the fluke in L.A. and after beating the tomato cans in Nashville. I feel like Truman being played like a Rube at the county fair by Stalin in Potsdam.

So after we all spent 2-3 days praising Shaw and the team for the great effort against U$C we have now decided the whole thing was a "fluke"? Interesting.

1.  You all can say "no proof of Covid, no proof of Covid" all you want.  But that doesn't change the fact that kids are out due to Covid-related protocols.  The statements to date by Shaw (trying to wiggle) and players on the team (more direct statements) have confirmed this.  Head in sand doesn't change the reality.

2.  Another fact is that Stanford's vax rate is 85%, at least as last reported.  Do you think that's good enough?  Do you not think that reflects - at least somewhat - on leadership (at team and university level)?  I definitely do.  As someone said, how about a team rule of no vax = no play (even if that means no scholie)?

3.  And 76lsjumb, yes, you're right that we don't know if these are breakthrough confirmed cases on vaxxed players, or infections of unvaxxed players, or just protocols for "close contact" exposure.  I would love to have that information to assess what roster prospects are going forward.  I also happen to think the "unvax shame/need for privacy" factor is a canard, given that I'm sure there are "public" activities that reveal whether one is vaccinated or not (i.e., when and where you're required to wear a mask on campus, the number of time you need to be tested, etc.), thus rendering the "privacy" argument chimerical.  And that's separate from the "Who cares about embarrassment, these guys need to be vaccinated for good of the team/community" argument.  And btw, none of the privacy/shame arguments affects point #2, which was the only criticism I directed toward Shaw (and even then acknowledged that there are many factors going into 85%).

At Berkeley, the student vaccination rate is 97%.  We should be ashamed!

RE: Home opener - Spiny_Norman - 09-24-2021

To bring this back to the original subject, I will point out that Stanford is on a 3 game home losing streak and has not won a game at Stanford Stadium in nearly two years. But there does seem to be some buzz on campus for tomorrow. I hope the students fill the Red Zone. It would be a big boost to the team to feel some home stadium energy.

RE: Home opener - Papa John - 09-24-2021

Yep, Stanford was 3-4 at home in 2019. The worst Shaw-coached home record before that was 4-2 in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

2020 was the first Shaw-coached year that Stanford lost its home opener.

Time to exorcise some demons!

Here's the vaccination dashboard for Stanford:

https://healthalerts.stanford.edu/covid-19/covid-dashboard/

It doesn't say what the denominator is, but you can estimate it by the matriculation rate (though the student numbers exclude post-docs), and are a bit old

https://registrar.stanford.edu/everyone/enrollment-statistics/enrollment-statistics-2019-20

I get 17,610 matriculated and non-matriculated students, excluding post-docs, and 17,544 fully vaccinated students for a vaccination rate of 99.6%.  I think the denominator is probably a bit larger since this was from 2019-20, but I think the student body vaccination rate is probably comparable to Cal's.

Same at Santa Clara, and 98% among faculty staff. One difference at Santa Clara is they (surprisingly) don't allow religious exemptions, only medical.

RE: Home opener - Papa John - 09-24-2021

I'm not at all surprised that Santa Clara doesn't allow religious exemptions, since the Pope--who happens to be a Jesuit--is urging Catholics to get vaccinated.

UC Santa Barbara, which regularly competes against Stanford in non-football sports, recently reported that over 95% of its students are fully vaccinated.

RE: Home opener - CrazedZooChimp - 09-24-2021

Why do I think we can/will beat UCLA? We beat $C basically without being able to run the ball except for the one long Peat run. We can clearly win games without the running backs doing much. UCLA's pass defense is bad, I don't see why we won't be able to score against them.

Will they score on us? Sure, probably a lot (although their pass blocking is bad), but we can score more on them.

Interestingly, our PFF grades over the last two games are higher on defense and almost identical on offense.

This week, with the start of classes, Stanford has increased the testing of unvaccinated students to twice weekly.
Vaccinated students are continuting to be tested once weekly.

With the influx of students from higher COVID incidence location mostly over, the spike of cases earlier this month should taper off quickly because the case rate in the local area is among the lowest in the country.
