I think it improbable we will get any "official" word regarding Tremayne ever. Even if we did get more info on what the prognosis is in the opinion of the doctors, it is impossible to predict how the individual will actually progress. Some guys do much much better than predicted. Some guys do much worse. What we will probably get is some rumor which is totally unverifiable. Lets all just hope for his speedy and complete recovery independent of his football status. If he plays next year, then we will have a data point.

Don't we have another freshman stud kicker on the roster? I recall being slightly surprised THAT good a kicker would come to Stanford when Karty still had 3-4 years of eligibility.

from Shaw's press conference
Probable - Bragg
Out - Tremayne, Smith, Karty
Wilson - may practice this or next week, will need 1-2 weeks of practice before playing

On the scale of football teams heading into a sixth consecutive game, that list isn't so bad. [And certainly we all knew Tremayne would be out.]
Of course it doesn't include all those missing from the defensive backfield.
The press conference update didn’t mention Noah Williams, Ben Yurosek, Zahran Manley, or Ethan Bonner. The actual depth chart (which may not be accurate as to who will be out with injury) lists the first two but not the latter two. So, yeah, as you said, DB is a mess.

He's a PWO. Two brothers have attended Stanford. We are very fortunate to have his talent available when our starting kicker is out.
Geaux Cardinal!

Great to have him, indeed! However, I think our punter, Sanborn, will take over kicking duties Friday. He did the same when Toner was injured a couple of years ago and acquitted himself well.

Shaw on KNBR said that Tremayne and his folks attended practice Tuesday. Tremayne told Shaw that he’s coming back better than ever.

Kenney's accuracy was poor in the open practice I warched... Sanborn may be the safer choice for XPs and short FGs.

I was about to counter with the Whalen not-brothers, but then checked the years. With Griff it depends upon how you count. Ten years ago today he was still playing in his final season for Stanford.
Otherwise, I am not sure who the candidates might be.
David Parry for most recent/best walkon position player? Jake Bailey
for most recent/best walkon specialist?

I don't believe the Whalens were related, just an incredible lucky coincidence.
Two walk-ons with the same last name exceed expectations and become key players at the same position. What are the chances...
Great to hear that Tremayne came to practice and in positive spirits for the future.
The success we've had with walk-on wide receivers does beg the question. Is there something about the wide receiver position that makes it more likely for non-touted players to succeed? Something that doesn't quite translate from high school? Maybe a position where the skills required don't mature until later on? I also remember lightly recruited players like Troy Walters (Bilettnikoff), from memory the only other D1 offer he had was from Tulsa. Shaw referred to Tremayne as one of the best receivers in America, sounds like hyperbole but really hard to argue given what we saw this year and last.

Thus the term "not-brothers".
Quote:Shaw referred to Tremayne as one of the best receivers in America, sounds like hyperbole but really hard to argue given what we saw this year and last.
Of course there is some hyperbole there for a guy who has 37 career receptions as a senior. But he also has developed very nicely during his time at Stanford and has some obvious ability.

Parry does fit the timeline, last playing for Stanford in 2014. I had somehow been thinking it was earlier.
I thought Bailey got a scholarship, but I am not certain.

Jake Bailey was most assuredly a scholarship player. He was highly recruited.

But Sanborn was in fact a recruited walk-on turned scholarship punter (and now, apparently, kicker).

Indeed Sanborn was technically a PWO. However, most believe that he was always going to be given a scholarship as he was a highly ranked recruit and also heavily recruited by several schools. Not sure why they did not just recruit him as a scholarship player to begin with.

I think this sometimes happens with kickers with wealthy parents whose parents just want to get them in to Stanford and don't care that much about scholarship money--Conrad Ukropina is a great example. Don't know about Sanborn's parents, but he went to an expensive private school.

pretty sure Bailey was a PWO too with an opportunity to win a scholarship but he was not guaranteed one.
on Tremayne, a USC fan with ties to Stanford's Hungarian football connection (the fan's father had been a Stanford team captain) had given me a heads up that he was not a normal PWO and he thought he'd end up starting for us. Tremayne was from a small school with a barely developed program. pretty prescient call. no other heads up since then.
while it has been encouraging to see the revival of the walkon program in numbers, it is bit disappointing to not see more development at positions other schools have with walkons as starters -- FB, TE, OL and non-kicking special teams. on the 1st and the latter, I am thinking Pat Ward types.

Bailey, who was high school teammates with current Cardinal long snapper Reed Miller at Santa Fe Christian High School in the San Diego area, committed to Stanford on the spot after special teams coordinator Pete Alamar offered him a full ride scholarship Tuesday. From a 247 sports article.

That sounds about right. There was a period where we were noting that while other teams were generally getting their special teams players (P, K, and LS) as PWO's who would be offered a scholarship if they became starters, we were making them recruited positions. I thought it made sense for punters and kickers, where it does seem to have resulted in better than average special teams, but I wasn't sure about long snappers. On the other hand, now that I think about it, when was the last time we had a long snapping mishap?
