RE: Harballs - BostonCard - 02-01-2022

As a college football fan, I hope Harbaugh stays in Michigan.  As a Jim Harbaugh fan, I wish him success wherever he winds up (excepting a select few rivals).

On ESPiN, there's a clip where they are discussing potential Harballs replacements at Michigan if he takes the Vikings' job.

Paul Finebaum, an "expert" analyst from SEC country mentioned, Bill O'Brien, Matt Rhule, and a wildcard, David Shaw. He said Shaw replaced Harballs at Stanford so he could do it at Michigan. He mentioned that Shaw is undervalued now, but 5 years ago, he was a top 5 coach.

LOL. Thanks for the injection of humor.

An interesting perspective.

It would appear that JH is remaining at Michigan. It has been said the Vikings didn't make him an offer today and that was a deal breaker. In any case, the article I posted a link to is now completely on point. I think there is no way they fire JH at this point. That would be stupid IMHO. I am also not sure I believe that this won't be a recurring problem, as there will be rumors out there even if JH is actually not interested. That said, if JH is "all in" on Michigan, it will be interesting to see what happens going forward.

So if the article says Michigan has to fire Harbaugh because he crossed the rubicon and that's what Bo would have done; and you and I and everyone knows that is not going to happen; I'm not sure how the article is "on point."

If it's on-point because relations are forever strained and they can't recover . . . well, I disagree.  Bo Schembechler, god love him, is a product of his times.  And those times are long gone.  MichiganFan is THRILLED to have Harbaugh "back," even with the 9-hour interview where no offer was made (how contrived/phony is that whole thing, btw?).*  And if Harbaugh continues to win at Michigan at his 10+ clip, they will embrace him and all his foibles and dalliances.

That's just the world we live in.

* I'd bet good money the bulk of the 9 hours was spent dancing around mutually agreeable terms, with Jim's agent burning the line to the Michigan AD to up the stakes.  At some point, the parties realized it wasn't going to happen, so the official story became "No offer was made by the Vikes.  Jim called AD and said "I'm a Michigan Man forever.  Blah, blah, blah."

How true. I mean, Nick Saban sent Jimmy Sexton to reach out to Texas boosters in order to light a fire and secure a raise at Alabama - and that's a college job at a semi-rival, not an NFL job. It's just the way the game is played these days.

If JH continues to have seasons like the 2021 season, you are so right. If he has many seasons like 2017, not so much. It will also be interesting to see what kind of a contract "extension" JH gets from UM. I am not so sure the "upping of the stakes" actually took place. If anything, I expect the bones of contention were about how much control JH would have over personnel and such. It would seem to me that given the financial hit UM took during COVID and the across the board pay cuts in the athletic department, this year may not be the politically optimal year for a big raise. Next year might be another story, especially if JH wins 10+. We shall see.

Winning covers a lot of warts. However, I would not dismiss the idea that a significant number of UM folks agree with the article I linked to, at least to some degree. I don't think any of us here are benighted enough to believe that any coach wouldn't listen to offers from other sources. It is however important to be discrete about it. Letting it be known you are actively seeking to move on is a risk. It does reduce the tolerance for other problems.

RE: Harballs - 82lsju - 02-17-2022

Quote:Jim Harbaugh will receive a base salary of $7.05 million this fall and up to $7.6 million in the final year of his new contract, which runs through the 2026 season
...
If Harbaugh leaves prior to the end of this contract "for any reason," he would owe Michigan $3 million in the first year. The buyout then drops to $2.25 million in the second, $1.5 million in the third, $750,000 in the fourth and zero in the fifth and final year.
...
The contract also states that Harbaugh will provide the athletic director with written notice prior to engaging in any discussions about other coaching opportunities "at any NCAA member institution, professional sports team or any other coaching or non-coaching positions that could result in termination of his employment at the University."

The revised contract essentially restores Harbaugh's salary to what it was prior to his 2-4 finish in 2020, when the university slashed his base salary to $4 million for 2021. Most of the bonuses from last year have remained the same.
