It’s pretty widely believed he’s coming back. Even in HS he wasn’t seen as a OAD. Not like Ziaire was.

Reminiscent of the Bootleg's link (from UCLA fan site, iirc) to apocryphal Pac 10 coaches' meeting where Monty and Lute were leading the discussion amongst conference coaches as to who would tank game(s) against UCLA to ensure that UCLA kept Lavin on as head coach.  It was hilarious.  [And for our younger readers, Lavin made the NCAAs, including S16s (all the while underperforming as coach . . . pretty badly, imo)].

I seem to recall that an email onslaught force Ted Leland to fire Walt Harris. I'm encouraging everyone to do the same now with Muir. Here's my little piece that I just sent:

Dear Mr. Muir,


I read your announcement yesterday that Coach Haase would stay on with a combination of disappointment, frustration, and incredulity. It’s been six years – six MORE years – of mediocre men’s basketball and thousands upon thousands of empty seats in Maples every game. Seriously, how much more do you need to see to understand that men’s basketball desperately needs new leadership?

There’s nothing in Coach Haase’s record at Stanford that gives any indication that the program is going to make the major leap next season from an occasional bid to the Not Important Tournament to an NCAA bid next year. That’s the bar that should have been set with him after last season’s disastrous finish – a bar that the team didn’t even come close to reaching this season.

Among Coach Haase’s unacceptably poor results, the one that sticks out most to me is the performance at the end of the regular season and in postseason. Good teams play better as the season goes on. Stanford has consistently played worse as the season has gone on under Coach Haase, with the last two seasons in particular being among the worst.


All I can do is tell you how poor I think this decision is, beg you to reconsider it, and to vote with my wallet and my feet. As long as Coach Haase is on our sideline, I will no longer be donating to the Buck/Cardinal Club and I won’t accept even free tickets to men’s basketball.

Lavin went to five Sweet Sixteens in six seasons. Beat Stanford in back-to-back seasons when we were ranked #1 in the country both times. Finished with a 145-78 record at UCLA.. No comparison to Haase; we would be delighted with that level of underperformance.

Stanford should take a page from the Celtics playbook. Fire Muir and "promote" Shaw.  It's worked out for the Celtics and I bet it would work for Stanford.

That's kind of brilliant. Shaw gets to stay on campus, is an excellent representative of the University, and we can avoid an uncomfortable coaching displacement.  I think the only flaw is Shaw would be presumably taking a huuuuuuuuuge paycut.

Had he departed Stanford when he was on top, I'm sure he could have slid right into a plum job on ESPN or Fox, but that ship sailed years ago. He might be attractive for the P12 Network today but it's becoming very awkward. He best years are behind him and growing more distant every year.  Another coach who was "great" until he wasn't.  Here's what's really depressing: He and Muir (and Haase) could remain at Stanford for many years to come. Let that sink in.

The attempt to draw a parallel to Wlat - even if emails abound from all sides - is probably not on point.  Wlat was never a fit for Stanford.  
Not sure he had one redeeming quality as a coach for Stanford, unlike Haase.

The parallel to IdiotFace was more about the ability for the fan base to influence the AD if the volume (and loss of money from cancelled season tix & donations) is big enough. But Muir isn't Leland.

I agree IdiotFace was just a bad hire in pretty much every aspect, and I thought Haase was a good hire who just hasn't worked out.

Yeah I'd say today they don't go to the AD they enter the transfer portal. The number of players who left the program the previous two years with remaining eligibility should have been more than enough of an indication for Muir to know that the program had serious problems It will be interesting to see if anything happens this off-season I expect at least one player if not more will enter the portal

Really?  Interesting.

I actually do NOT expect that.  Delaire may try and see if he can play somewhere else (think he technically has one more year left), but other than that . . . ?  

Ingram going pro?  He may try that, but I don't think he'll do much (if anything) in the Association.

I actually do NOT expect that.  Delaire may try and see if he can play somewhere else (think he technically has one more year left), but other than that . . . ?

I think one or more of those who can, will. Most will stay for the education, accepting that they are relegated to mediocre coaching, development, and results with a low chance of playing in any kind of postseason beyond a game or two in the conference tournament. But it wouldn't surprise me if one or more players decides they just want to play for a better team, especially if it's closer to home.

Is it a hot take? Yeah. But I think it's going to happen
