Quote:Yes, players need to focus one game at a time, but the coaches need to scout the road ahead.  Stanford gets a benefit because they've played MD and TX before, so they've got a head start on preparing for the possible match-ups this coming weekend, and the players already have faced those teams.  LSU/Ohio State will need new preparation beginning later today for the winner of that game.

MT, you must’ve been channeling Tara - from today’s NYTimes: “We never look ahead,” Tara VanDerveer, Stanford’s coach, preaches to her team, “but we have to plan ahead.”

JJ Jennifer is doing great. One of my all time favorites. Loved watching Travel games in Oregon with poster Joe Montes and JJs dad
If you were at Sr Day you heard Russell Wilson’s great speech.
“It’s not what you did yesterday or last night or this morning. It’s what you do next”
Congrats to JJ

Stanford will play the 6:30PM game Friday evening on ESPN. Ohio State/Texas will have the early game on ESPN2 at 4:00 pm. Hope to see lots of Card fans in Spokane!

I think it is worth noting that Stanford is the only #1 seed playing the later game at their regional in the round of 16. South Carolina, NC State, and Louisville play in the first game of the day at their regional sites. Hopefully the silver lining in the later start time is more time for the Hull friends and family to pile in!

I’m glad they play the later game because I can make it home before tip off.  I do believe they have the later game so they are not playing at the same time as the other #1 seed South Carolina.

Agree with this take. #1 seeds get ESPN and can’t both be playing at the same time for tv purposes. Glad we are the late game also.

I think our toughest two games of this tourney will be the ones in Spokane.  (Let's hope we have two.)  If we cut down the nets in Spokane, I really like our chances in Minneapolis.

That being said, I'm smiling at the thought that I don't think the Hulls will allow our team to lose in Spokane.  On Sunday, Lexie gave us just a glimpse of what the Hulls can do when their season and their college career is on the line.

BTW, it's time for Jones to step up and showcase her talent.  IMO she has been on cruise control so far in this tourney.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Maryland Sweet 16 Friday - JJJ - 03-22-2022

Behind a paywall but Chantel Jennings puts Maryland as the second best team in the tourney (and only based on how they played in the tourney, omitting anything prior) after Stanford.

Wow, a bit of a different take than the ESPN re-seeding. And maybe one that better reflects what's going on in the tournament. This article has Stanford as #1, but then right after, there's #2 Maryland. If you believe the 1-16 seeding given here, Spokane is by far, by far, the toughest region. Total seeds there add up to 18, with OSU the lowest seeded team at #10. The Bridgeport total is 34, followed by Wichita at seed sum of 40, then Greensboro total of 44 (including the two lowest seeded teams, North Carolina at 15 and Creighton at 16).

Marty, if I’m correct, I recall that you live in Eastern Washington. Are you going to attend the games?

Thanks so much for posting. I have such great memories of this game, starting with the fact that we (at least the fans) went into it with a bit of chip on our shoulders, thinking we should have been the #1 seed, not Maryland. At the time, we were higher ranked in the polls. And then at the team send-off at the Davenport Annex, the #2 seed team hotel, Jayne was dancing and looked so full of energy and excitement, I turned to my husband and said, "that's it, Stanford is going to win." The game was fantastic, and yes, the duel between Wiggins and Tolliver, amazing. At the end, in the postgame interview on the floor, Candice breaking down in tears and saying, I just love my team, I just love my coach. Going onward, to the final four in Tampa, first final four since 1997, an 11-year gap -- and there beating UConn in the Semis after having lost to them in the Bahamas in November. So much, so very much, tied to that game against Maryland in Spokane in 2008.  For me, it was a rebirth of greatness of Stanford WBB.

At that post-game interview moment, I distinctly recall thinking:  "Wiggins may be my favorite Stanford basketball player ever!"  Her uncontained and unadulterated joy was a thing to behold.  [And was it Wiggins or Powell who, when learning of her Stanford offer via a jersey being put on her bed at the hotel room, slept in the jersey that night?].

P.S.  Just because she shouldn't be forgotten: J.J. Hones!

I remember seeing Candice in the concourse of Maples when she was a frosh. It was a MBB game. I recognized her face but didn't really know who she was. We exchanged somewhat longer than normal looks. I recall getting the feeling that she was someone special. I remarked as such to the frend I was with at the game. I looked up the WBB roster with pictures when I got home and learned it was Candice Wiggins. I also learned about her dad which I found interesting. Just as someone walking through the concourse of Maples, she had an extra spark about her.

I don't have access to the article (paywall) but wonder how the total scores look EXCLUDING the #1 seed in each, as that would give us a comparison of how competitive the others are that we could possibly play. Probably consistent with the total of the four, but just in case there are differences the three would likely be most relevant.

I considered going to the game(s), but decided against it.  The available tickets didn't offer good views and I loathe being in crowds.  I would have gone to our game against Gonzaga but it was sold out.  I'm content in watching our women warriors on my 65" screen.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Maryland Sweet 16 Friday - 81alum - 03-25-2022

“I think we’ll see a better version of Maryland and I think Maryland will see a better version of Stanford,” VanDerveer said. “November is November basketball. We’re talking March basketball, which at this point both teams are playing their best.”

Story in today's Merc, which also has a front page story on Anna Wilson.  The team is getting some local publicity this time around.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Maryland Sweet 16 Friday - M T - 03-25-2022

KPIX Game Day Thursday night had a bit on the Hulls (with video from some presser in Spokane) and then a longer bit on Jeanette Pohlen.  I recorded it, but I don't see it online (yet?)
KPIX had a 2 minute segment on the Hulls on the 21st.

I saw something on one of the other channels as well.

I haven't been paying attention to WBB that much this week up until today.  I just noticed ESPN is streaming the game for free.  It doesn't matter to me because I get cable ESPN but it should bring in additional viewers to women's college basketball.

Cool.  I wonder how people that don't get ESPN would know about it.  If they are willing to stream it overseas, that might get good attention.

Also, Buick (IIRC) has been running ads with something like "40% of all athletes, yet women get 10% of the media coverage" and saying they will be working to reduce that disparity.   I'm not sure what they can do other than sponsor some events.   (The two sports I recall on those ads were WBB & WSwim.  Not that MSwim gets more media coverage than WSwim!)

Brink their shots.

Hit a lot of 3s.

Great start to our sweet 16.  Gotta keep it up.

Two brinks and counting!

Maryland is not used to only scoring 10 points in a quarter.  You betcha!

I'll take a 22 point first quarter for the Cardinal.  Lovin' it.

Jones decided to show up and play to her potential.  Cameron is dialed in and dominating on both ends of the court.
