Tiger blah. Womanizer, liar. Would you trust him?
Sunjae Im. A moon-faced kid with a sloooooooow swing. For his first few years he played in every event traveling around the country in his vehicle. No permanent domicile.
Cameron Smith. Best wedge game on tour. Mom and sis travel from Europe to see him win the Players. Takes TIME OFF to be with his family and passes on the Match Play. Wow! horrible mustache. Baby face.
Scheffler. has it all. No 1 in world ranks. Big guy, smiles a lot. Likeable.
These are the guys I want to see win. The young guys compete and most actually like each other. Take a lesson Tiger.

I've never been there. I hear it's a magical experience.
I think those phenomena tend to be highly localized. The first time Arnold Palmer crossed the Atlantic, he finished second at The Open at Royal Birkdale, a course on the west coast of England in Southport. As he's being driven in, his hosts rhapsodized about the great beauty of the land-and-sea course. As they're driving by the course, Palmer says "I'm glad it's not this cow pasture," or words to that effect. Oops...
Separately, I can't recall if it was Muirfield or Carnoustie -- it was a pretty bleak weathery day, and the course wasn't gorgeous -- but the British announcer was going on and on about how the British course was the most beautiful pairing of water and turf in all the world, and his American counterpart sniffed that Pebble Beach wasn't too bad on that front. Of course, nine of the 18 holes at PB are on the water.
All depends on where you're from. My dad's a shareholder at Pasatiempo, but his favorite seaside course is Pacific Dunes at the Bandon Dunes resort in Oregon.

I played Pasatiempo a bunch for the Cable Car BB tourney. Wonderful. MacKenzie also designed the nine hole nightmare called Gleneagles in SF's McLaren Park. I used to play there but today I have no chance except on one par 3.
Pebble is beautiful. But the signature hole #18 is really all about the water and the trophy homes.
I'll take #17 at Lincoln Park, a peoples course. You are teeing off on a cliff overlooking the Channel with the GG Bridge, Alcatraz, the Marin Headlands and the promise of the finest bay in the world in view. During Vietnam a couple of times we saw aircraft carriers steaming into port toward Alameda NAS. There were warning signs but we still teed it up and hit drives toward Marin. If you hit it on the nose you could see the splash in the Channel. IMO beats #18 at Pebble.
Forgot about the near secret 18 in Pacific Grove near Asilomar. Back nine especially special.

I'm a brobdingnagian fan of the Poor Man's Pebble Beach, a/k/a Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course. The front nine is like any other muni. The back nine is gorgeous, with ice plant for rough. Mrs. Mick and I were playing one very foggy morning, and it was still and quiet and beautiful and only the sound of the waves and the birds were making any noise. We were on the green with about 40 yards of visibility and I said "Babe, this is so nice out here, it's just like a private course."
At that moment, a golf ball came whizzing between our heads, stopping on the green. Four drunk guys with their shirts off came out of the mist, apologizing when they realized they'd hit into us. Mrs. Mick said, "Now I remember. Public course."
The Neville Nine (back nine) is a joy to play. Weekend green fees are $75.

I play in a scramble there every year. It is a beautiful course. With reasonable green fees to boot.
And for beauty coupled with degree of difficulty, don’t forget 16 at Cypress

I was just at Pebble last month. Beautiful as ever. Definitely the prettiest course I've ever played.
I get to play Pasatiempo once a year - Stanford has an exchange with them. I could probably play more often if I wanted.
I'm really looking forward to playing Lake Merced when Gil Hanse finishes his retrovation. Apparently he found Allistair MacKenzie's original designs for 14 of the 18 holes and has used them extensively.
I'm also looking foward to playing Old Head and a few others in Ireland in summer 2023.

Pro tip: Play Pasatiempo for free on Christmas Day. Just walk on, course will be available.

Tiger finishes 47th after a couple of 78’s. 23 strokes back from the winner, Scheffler, but that he was able to complete four rounds is no less than miraculous.

Augusta is pretty special. a couple greens look like they have elephants buried in them. course is immaculate and the caddies are phenomenal. do not pass up the opportunity to play it.
on favorite hole, #s 15 or 16 at Cypress are hard to beat, same with #7 at Pebble especially if the wind blows (or if you play #17 from the old blue tee box behind the road).
on great stretches of holes, Amen Corner or #11 thru 17 at Ballybunion.
on favorite courses, Cypress, then Royal Melbourne and then Augusta. all Mackenzie layouts.

Slide you should play Gleneagles. You no longer have to fear getting mugged by kids from the Sunnyvale Projects. They are too busy breaking into tourist cars at Fisherman's Wharf.
As for Augusta on CBS you do know that all the bird calls are artificial and mixed in by TD's in the truck. Also Butler Cabin looks like a place young people are lured into. And the phrase "... like no other" reeks of elitism and toupeed 60 year stuff shirts wearing green jackets that they don't deserve. And galleries called "patrons." The whole place still has the stench of Southern racism and it can't be washed off.

yes, tv-fed in bird calls. rumor is the last deer seen on property was 65 years ago. I've never seen a ground critter.
I've not played your Gleneagles, but I've played the others you named.
on munis, while no Goat Hills as described by Dan Jenkins, the money games at the DC area munis were fun. cabbies were great to bet with/against. never a lot of money bet but enough to keep it interesting.
too funny on the crime. I was at East Lake the day after the guys were robbed at gunpoint between 3 green and 4 tee. they had no cash -- robbers took their shorts and pants. the Ga Tech team guys always told me to play fast through that stretch and always to have a few ones just in case.

How about the sound of the blimp today? Was that mixed in?
On a Stanford related note, I remember watching the Masters in the mid-80s and the Club President, Hord Hardin, gave a quick message. I damn near fell off the couch. Hord Hardin III, aka Tripp Hardin, lived next door freshman year and was a punter for the team. Who knew. . . .

If they mixed in the birds, at least they were ornithologically correct.

Knowing a thing or two about birds (not great with sounds though), migration is pretty heavy this time of year in the lowlands of Georgia. Lots of variety of sounds and songs, no doubt. Birds are pretty darn loud, too.
One of my favorite movies is Finding Forrester, even though Sean Connery mistakes a Yellow Warbler for a Connecticut Warbler. Tough to let such an egregious error slide.

Hord Hardin the Masters Chair, in 1982 ended a 46 year tradition in which the pros used local Augusta National caddies for the Masters. Tom Watson (among others) made the request directly of Hardin that the pros be allowed to use their regular caddies. After all, reasoned Watson in his message, as an attorney would Mr. Hardin accept a secretary from the secretarial pool instead of his personal secretary in the face of imminent major litigation? Sound argument, sound reasoning, and the Augusta National caddies were eliminated. Ironically, Watson won twice and finished second twice between 1977 and 1982 using Augusta National caddies...and never won after that.
Augusta caddies used to rule the grounds at the Masters. Then the rain came in 1982 (yahoo.com)

Not sure there was a blimp. The aerials were drone shots.
Drones may say lives. The best helo pilot I ever flew with understood what we were trying to do with a Tyler mount. Much better if the pilot makes the move and the operator just fights the wind (you are partially hanging out the door frame). He missed a wire on a shoot scout and was gone instantly. I was lucky after 50 flights and only had one hard landing.

I heard an incessant droning as one of the players lined up a shot. Thought that has to be irritating for the players. . . .
As always, great stories.
