The officials once again inserted themselves into the outcome of the game in the final minute, with two more calls that favored Memphis.
The loose ball foul on Draymond Green's rebound with 40 secs left and W's down 1, was just a truly awful call. Green gained no advantage by pushing off, and Morant fell to ground as Green was going for the ball. Then the travel on Klay, which was very debatable basically ended the game.
No team has any business winning a game shooting 18% from 3pt range, but neither does a team that shoots less than 40% FG as the Grizzlies did.
One of the reasons I picked Memphis to win the series, aside from the offensive rebound and turnover matchup, is Curry just isn't shooting as well this season as in years past. If he goes 5-12, the Warriors win. But he is going 3-15 while Morant is going 5-12. That's not going to cut it. I also don't think Wiggins will deliver the points the Warriors need.
The W's need to do at least 2/3 of these three things in each game to win:
- Shoot over 35% 3pt FG
- Win the rebounding battle
- Win the turnover margin
In Game 1 they checked the rebounding and 3pt FG boxes. In Game 2, they only checked the rebounding box.
They are going to sorely miss Gary Payton II, but it's possible Jonathan Kuminga can mitigate the loss a bit. Speaking of that, Dillon Brooks should be suspended at least for Game 3.
Those were the real Celtics in Game 2 vs. Bucks. And they did it without Marcus Smart, which is really impressive. Of course, Jaylen Brown now seems to be nursing a hamstring that could really impact the outcome.
Celtics did a great job of creating shots for themselves all over the floor, including the mid-range they all but ignored in Game 1.

imo for the rest of the season. a truly dirty play. the sort that warrants criminal prosecution.

Payton was Thug-Mugged and the NBA must suspend perp Brooks for the rest of the series. It would end Memphis' cheap-shot Bill Laimbeer antics. Kerr's reaction last night said it all. Can't wait to see/hear Warrior fans when Memphis comes to SF.

Here's the foul that got Grayson Allen a one game suspension. He hit Alex Caruso in the air which led to Caruso being injured and missing several weeks.

At least Allen was hitting the ball when Caruso was in air. Brooks hit Payton II to the side of his head with his arm and did not come close to hitting the ball. If Allen got 1 game, Brooks really should get at least a 2 game suspension, and I would make it 3 if I were in charge due to it being the playoffs and how the dirty play resulted in the Warriors losing a very important player for the series and maybe beyond.

IMHO the NBA hasn't played basketball for some time. The game they play allows so much contact that eventually things like this injury become inevitable. Yes, this was beyond the norm, but the norm keeps moving towards more and more contact. Undercutting opponents, either on purpose or accidentally, happens often. Just as in football, when the players get bigger, stronger, and faster, more injuries will happen. I realize that they are never going back to playing basketball, but I just hope the women's game doesn't follow the same trajectory.

Play keeps moving to more physical? To my eye play looks much cleaner than the 80s/90s game. The success of the Warriors with their free flowing, motion offense in their early championships would have been impossible in, say, a 1990s NBA ruled by either Chuck Daly's Detroit or Pat Riley's Knicks/Heat. Some of this is attributable to a set of rule changes that favor offensive flow and limit contact well below the bar allowed in previous eras.
Whenever, I'm tempted to yell, "Let 'em" play I have a flashback to Robert Parrish slugging Bill Laimbeer (blindsided him away from the ball really) in front of a ref during a televised NBA playoff game and only getting a regular foul called. I take a deep breath and come to peace with most whistles.

No where near as physical as it was with the Pistons. Or even the Celtics-Lakers. Just ask Kurt Rambis and Kevin McHale.

You are of course correct that the game under the boards when the "big men" ruled the game and lived in the paint was extremely physical. If you went in there, it was going to be tough. The 3 point shot and zone defenses brought that physical game to the entire court, not just under the basket. All the players are bigger. Guards are now as big as power forwards used to be. They are at least as quick as ever. That has upped the ante on collisions and hard fouls IMHO. Not that I much liked the Pistons thuggery back in the day, but at least it was regarded as the exception.

I don't think the Pistons were the exception. Pat Riley -era Knicks played very ugly basketball, for example. Much more dirty play, cheap shots and many more on-court fights as recently as twenty years ago. The trajectory of the game (with a much less cluttered lane) has been going in a positive direction for the last twenty years or so. Power forwards and centers these days need to be mobile and versatile, there are few big man intimidators now whereas every team used to have an Oakley type.

Does anyone see Malice at the Palace happening now? Genuine question. The players make so much more money now than back then. Or McHale decapitating Rambis? ("Part of the game") Or Kermit Washington rearranging Rudy Tomjanovich's face in the shape of his fist? Chris "to the nuts" Paul is still playing, so maybe.
To me an appropriate penalty would be Brooks suspended as long as Payton is out. Nothing inadvertent about what he did. If Payton's career is over, that's pretty rough for Brooks isn't it? Yeah, that's a little harsh. Should be suspended for the series, which has the effect of making Memphis better.
The Grizzlies aren't my cup of tea as a team, but I really, really want to visit Memphis someday. I'll bring an apostrophe, "r" and "e" with me.

How about a compromise on the "out as long as the injured guy is out" concept? It's now being reported that Gary Payton II will be out 3 weeks. So I'm thinking one game suspension for every week the player injured by unacceptable on-court action is out. In this case, it would be a 3 game suspension. That would take Brooks out of both games in SF and the pivotal Game 5 in Memphis. Seems equitable to me.
One thing I don't like is the notion that Brooks "effectively" served a one game suspension already because his foul happened so early in the game. There should not be some sort of incentive for reckless behavior if you do it right when the game starts!

Warriors ran away with it today, and Morant aggravated a knee injury on a play where Poole appeared to grab his knee.

FIFY: Poole grabbed Morant's knee after he apparently aggravated a previous injury to it.
Let's stop it with the insinuation Poole did anything wrong or that his tug on Morant's knee caused the injury. That's what I thought after watching the replay, but I'm no expert, so here is one:

That play is getting all the attention but Ja may have aggravated the balky knee earlier with 11:45 remaining in the 3rd when he closed out on a three point attempt, as described in this video:

I was not insinuating anything. Ja Morant did land awkwardly trying to rush out to defend a three, but he also stayed in the game after.
He left the game after Poole grabbed his knee, though with five minutes left in the game and a 23 point deficit, the game was well out of hand.
