Three guys in the top 5 and four in the top 20 is great!
T1. Vilips -5

T13. Ng E

Tee times tomorrow run from 9:30 through 10:06 Central time. Playing with Illinois & Florida.

I really hope Coach finds a 5th guy who can go low on occasion.  Can't always count on the first 4 to be 10 under.  That said it is a great first round for the group.  Last year they seemed "off" all year.  I hope the offseason results really helped their confidence in their game. Doing well against the group they are playing against and on the road would be another confidence booster.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Hulk01 - 09-17-2022

For the casual fans:

1.  This is as elite a field as you during the regular season: NC (2nd ranked), Florida (3), ASU (5), Oklahoma State (7), Texas (9), and home team Illinois (11).

2.  Vilips came to Stanford three years ago as the world's number one ranked junior, for over two years.  Perhaps this is the year he fulfills his apparent potential.

Well it's only two rounds but I'm pretty sure freshman Dean Greyserman is not that fifth player this season. He sits one spot above DFL...

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 09-17-2022

A great day two for the Cardinal. Tied for second lowest round of the day and grew a one-shot lead into seven!
1. Stanford -9
2. ASU -2
3. Illinois -1

Four guys in the top ten, but sadly our fifth is having a rough collegiate debut
T4. Vilips -4
T6. Thorbjornsen -3
T9. Brown & Ng -1
75. Greyserman +17 (ouch)

Vilips recovered from a triple on 10 with three birdies on his last 7 holes. Brown would be tied with Thorbjornsen had it not been for a double on 18

I know little about the other options for the 5th player.  Looking at the roster doesn't seem to make the question of 5th man any easier.  I would suppose Coach will give Greyserman at least another chance to show what he can do.  On paper he does seem like the most likely candidate.  Based on his Bio he should be playing better than he is at the moment.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 09-18-2022

What a great way to open the season for men's golf by winning a very loaded tournament by a whopping 12 shots!
1. Stanford -9
T2. Illinois & Florida +3
4. ASU +4

Michael Thorbjornsen also wins the individual title, which I believe is his first in college golf, and three other players finish in the top 15
1. Thorbjornsen -7
T6. Vilips -3
T9. Ng E
T12. Brown +1

If Coach Ray can find a good 5th player, this will be a team that could contend this year

Regarding options for the 5th position, I'd say Alex Yang is the most likely to play there this year but I think the 4th and 5th spots will be up for grabs based on weekly qualifying. The top 3 spots are pretty much locked in for the year, other than injuries or conflicts with professional and major amateur tournaments

On the strength of their win at Olympia Fields, the Stanford men have joined the women as the #1 ranked collegiate team in the country.

Boy, the Stanford SID department is truly awful. At 6 PM I can't find any info on the matches today with Cal. Did they even take place? To say nothing of any videos of the Men's Water Polo games this past week. What gives?

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - Spiny_Norman - 10-02-2022

#2 ranked Stanford men's golf plays Monday and Tuesday at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial CC in Fort Worth. The 16-team field features four Top-5 teams, six Top-10 programs and 10 of the Top-20 ranked schools.

All teams play 36 holes tomorrow with a final 18 on Tuesday. Stanford's lineup is the same as for the season opening tournament with Greyserman in the 5th slot alongside Thorbjornsen, Vilips, Brown and Ng. Stanford is paired with #1 Vanderbilt, #6 Texas Tech and #20 North Carolina.

You can follow the scoring here - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=26531

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 10-03-2022

Stanford sits in 2nd after the first two rounds at Colonial, where they are the defending champs and face a field as strong as their first event

1. North Carolina -10
2. Stanford -6
3. Arizona St -3

Thorbjornsen continues to play strong, and other guys are contributing
2. Thorbjornsen -5
T12. Ng -1
T23. Vilips +1
T29. Brown +2
T52. Greyserman +5

The top four continue to play well, but I'm confused as to why Greyserman is in the lineup. He finished a couple spots above DFL last tournament and is in the bottom half of this one so far. There's other options available.

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - winflop - 10-04-2022

The boys didn't play as well today. They had the highest score among all teams and slipped from second to seventh
1. North Carolina -15
2. Texas Tech -6
T3. Pepperdine/ASU -5
7. Stanford +5

Thorbjornsen was the only player to finish in the Top 30
T8. Thorbjornsen -3
T31. Vilips & Ng +3
T44. Brown +5
T60. Greyserman +9

Next up for both the men's and women's teams is the Stephens Cup, October 9-12 at Seminole Golf Club just outside West Palm Beach, FL on the Atlantic side so not likely to see much in the way of hurricane damage there (fingers crossed)

RE: Stanford MGolf Thread - d4cohn - 10-07-2022

On the PGA side, alums Maverick McNealy and Patrick Rodgers both with chances to pick up their first PGA tour win
this weekend in Las Vegas. McNealy is two shots off the lead heading into R3, while Rodgers is four back.

Yes, great to see.  Wu also had a great round today, made some amazing putts.  Shot a 65 today, and is 5 under overall.  On the ladies side Andrea Lee and Casey Danielson made the cut in their tournament.
