Stanford ties it in the 89th minute with a beautiful bending free kick. It's a draw.

No Maya Doms or Andrea Kitahata - probably our two best players heading into this season. Hope they are okay! Thank goodness for Aikey and our other terrific frosh who have stepped up already!

-> The Best Played Game This Season (by both sides)
Stanford tied Santa Clara (2-2) in a Sunday night game played in the rain at Santa Clara. The game has to be satisfying for Stanford despite the tie result, despite neither Doms nor Kitahata getting to play, despite the rain, and despite allowing an opponent, for the first time this season, to score more than one goal.
So what was it about this game? It was a major come-from-behind effort by Stanford after Santa Clara scored two goals in the first 22 minutes of the game. Defensive lapses – perhaps, but you got to play on despite short term results.
Santa Clara was an excellent team despite winning only 2 games against 5 losses going into this game. They proved it by scoring two quick goals in the first 22 minutes.
Stanford, which had not dominated the earlier part of the game, began to assert itself. There was a midfield battle throughout this game, but Stanford began to win more of those battles after it fell behind by two. Samantha Williams began the comeback with a goal at 33.32, off a feed from Amy Sayer.
In second half, Stanford’s superiority was more evident. Stanford out shot Santa Clara 18 to 9, with 11 of those Stanford shots in the second half. Two hit the crossbar, one by Lumi Kostmeyer just moments after she re-entered the game in the second half, and the other by Jasmine Aikey near the end the game. But Aikey was not done yet. With less than two minutes left, and things looking glum for Stanford, Aikey approached the box again and was fouled just outside the box. After things were lined up, Aikey deftly curved her shot around Santa Clara’s line, landing it in the far corner of the net.
It was Aikey’s first goal for Stanford, but it won’t be her last. Aikey has won a starting role as an attacking mid and she is fighting hard to keep it. She’s tall, strong, fast, and maintains control, which makes her difficult to defend.
Four freshmen started this game: Aikey, Kostmayer, Montoya, and Evans. They all played significant roles. An exciting season ahead. As for this game, it ended in a tie, but it was a victory in spirit for the Cardinal who had overcome adversity.

Yep, you never want to underestimate Santa Clara. They only had 3 wins in their first 9 matches last season and still made the College Cup. As of late, Jerry Smith's has been focusing more on skill building than resume building in preseason. And it seems to work. Last year Stanford easily beat SC 3-1 in the preseason but then lost to them 0-1 in the first round of the NCAAs.

What a strike by Lumi! She's got a real hunter's mentality. As of Sept. 28th Lumi's 8 goals (in 10 games) was tied for most Div I goals by a frosh with Arkansas - Pine Bluff's Tiana Johnson (who had 8 goals in 13 games). Lumi now has 9 goals in 11 games, which may put her in the lead nationally among frosh. She's also 2nd in the Pac 12 behind Colorado's Shyra James, who has 10 goals so far (none against P12 teams). Lumi's 9 goals in 11 games is slightly above Sophia Smith's goals/game ratio (17 goals/21 games) in her final season on the Farm and above even Macario's goals/games ratio of (17 goals in 25 games) in her freshman year (a season Cat won ESPNW Player of the Year). So if Lumi keeps this pace up, this would be a truly special season in Stanford history.
