I find the last line in the Tweet rather odd. "I cannot thank Coach Shaw, and all the great staff at Stanford for allowing me the opportunity to be part of your first class program". I assume he meant to say "enough" somewhere between "Stanford" and "for", and the comma is extraneous. Or maybe it's a Freudian slip and he really cannot thank anyone in the program at all. Anyway, another 4-star recruit heads for presumed greener pastures. Let's see where he ends up.

At least it wasn't "there is no love lost" misuse that comes up in all those decommit & transfer posts. For some reason that is like nails on a chalk board to me.

Seems weird to me, certainly more so than Peat and Jones leaving.
Probly doesn’t say too much about the State of the Program (while Jones and Peat leaving did say something, IMO).

Hold the handwringing (at least for today). Harris has withdrawn from the transfer portal.

I saw that same article. Harris's Tweet had a short shelf life.

No it didn’t. He’s not in the transfer portal because he’s not allowed to be in the transfer portal at this point of the year since we’re not undergoing a coaching change and ‘‘tis not transfer portal season. Somebody erred in putting him in or reporting him as being in. But his tweet said what he meant: he’s gone. Shaw said in today’s press conference that Harris isn’t on the team, and Harris has already been removed from the roster.

Lots of questions on this one. None that will be answered though. Best of luck to him, though kid of odd after reading his announcement a couple of years ago:
"Stanford is where I want to be and need to be. It challenges me athletically and academically at the highest level. This school will help me continue my legacy of being a student-athlete. Overall it has a culture of excellence that I want to be a part of. I love the philosophy of Coach Shaw and his approach to the game! I believe in my heart that Coach Gould will prepare me for the next level! I love the diversity of the overall people I will be around. Stanford will grant me the reach of unbelievable people and alumni. Finally, I love and want to be the standard of a Stanford Man."

Interesting. His oddly-formulated Tweet said "I have made the tough decision to enter the transfer portal". Seems Kevin Borba at SI has to update his article, because the sub-headline reads: "
The former four-star's time at Stanford is not done yet."

I had lengthier thoughts on other boards but it’s not letting me copy and paste from a mobile device so I’ll just say this:
Ron Gould hasn’t had a running back he’s recruited NOT transfer out yet (in addition to a 4-star he inherited, Sione Lund, transferring out Gould has said sayonara to Justus Woods, Austin Jones, Nate Peat, and Arlen Harris). We’ll see how long Smith, Filkins, and Barrow (and Leigber now that he’s switched) can stomach it. Of course we have a RB coach problem. And, by the way, Gould looks like a failure at Stanford whether you look at recruiting, retention, production, contribution to offensive scheme, good vibes, or anything else that could be used to justify his job.

In other words, he has a job for life under Shaw.

I agree that Harris is gone. He's off the roster online and Shaw said as much in his press conference. I think what really raises red flags is that when Shaw was asked to elaborate on the decision, he said something along the lines of he's off the team so I'm not going to talk about him.

Either Harris couldn't play (due to lack of ability or injury), or coaches wouldn't play him (discipline or finding him severely lacking in ball security...or something).
I think it's OK for Shaw to be silent on this one.

I saw another likelier possibility that our coaches did want him to play. They might have asked him to be ready to play for the rest of the season, at least as a backup or a third option. Presumably, he was already unhappy at Stanford and planning to transfer out, so he didn't want to burn his shirt. This seems to me like a better explanation of the timing of his announcement, specifically right now when he was called upon to be ready.
Maybe it's just a matter of degrees - he thought he was worthy of starting, and the coaches saw him as a backup for now.
In any case, it's perfectly fine for Shaw to be silent. You can judge for yourself whether his response indicated a slight bit of annoyance:
https://youtu.be/A7csuvMGhO8?t=262
"Arlen's not on the football team, so I don't have any comment about that."

Wow. What a cold, calculated response.
RE: Line vs. UCLA -
newguy - 10-25-2022
it's entirely possible that Harris was excited to come to the Farm and play football. he knows he's behind Smith and Filkins, but that's ok.....he'll practice hard and learn the offense in case he's needed.
Smith is out for the season after game 2, so he keeps practicing hard, thinking maybe he has a shot at playing this year. Shaw/Gould still has him behind a walk-on and an all-purpose back, but that's ok.....he'll keep practicing hard in case he's called on.
then Filkins is knocked out for the season. Arlen figures since he's been practicing hard, maybe he'll get his shot. after all, David Bailey, Ernest Cooper, Fisher Anderson, Sam Roush, Jaxson Moi, Mudia Reuben, Ashton Daniels, and maybe even C J Hawkins have gotten their shot.
then he's told, no.
personally, i don't blame him one bit.

Yes, Ron Gould has had a sketchy track record as Stanford RB coach. Interestingly, Bear fans were all up in arms when Gould joined the Cardinal football staff just before Bryce Love's break-out year in 2017. Gould had coached some stellar UCB backs (Marshawn Lynch, Jahvid Best, Shane Vereen, etc.) during his tenure there (1997-2012), and the Cal faithful thought he would do the same at Stanford. Guess they needn't have worried. The post-Love RB record at Stanford is nothing to boast about. Cam Scarlett had some success, but he joined in 2015. That's it.
