Football is first among equals. By far. It matter$ more. If Muir muffs football, he flunks. Period. #MuirAndShawMustGo

This is my view too but he's muffed men's basketball, alumni goodwill, and the integrity of the school too. Varsity Blues could have been enough on its own. Football is actually a bit down the list of reasons to fire him as those failures fall on Shaw's shoulders and are harder to address if you're in Muir's shoes than some of the other failings. But the real point is he's failed in most ways that matter.

Add to this his complete financial mismanagement of the department, spending like a drunken sailor as if conference revenues from the network were going to grow when they were collapsing

Also, Varsity Blues ***SHOULD*** have been enough on its own

As a result of all these fiascos Muir has no credibility with the alumni base and potential donors. Who in their right mind would give money to this guy without very specific conditions? Plus what football or MBB coach would come to wrok for a guy with limited credibility and an uncertain future?

He should have been gone after Varsity Blues came to light or at the latest when the 11 sports were reinstated.

Thought that just occurred to me - might "accountability" this fall take the form of Muir rather than Shaw getting the axe following the football season?

RE: Sunday afternoon thoughts - UCLA - Spiny_Norman - 10-31-2022

Who is going to axe Muir? Persis Drell? MTL? Just as Muir seems uninterested in holding Shaw accountable for football results, the Provost and her boss the President seem uninterested in anything related to Athletics.

No one at Stanford will be getting the axe this year, and that includes the football team after our second to last game. . . .

Watch out for the BOT. They are onto the rot at the top, which goes on well beyond Muir and his escapades. Stanford's metal health/quality of student life issues are real issues that the current administration is struggling with. Not to mention some academic departments not pulling their weight despite the copious resources available to them or Stanford's continued impasse with PA/Menlo Park/Santa Clara County in getting more housing built.

Metal Health was Quiet Riot's best album.

Why wasn't Bravman the choice to replace Hennessey?

One of the very first things I did as a freshman was teach my floor's RA how to use Napster to download songs.  Her first choice was Quiet Riot's "Cum On Feel the Noize."

For those who would like to reflect on a better Stanford-UCLA match-up from years past, when we had a running back who racked up 263 yards vs. the Bruins, there's this gem from 2017.  It was Mora's last season, and his surrender cobra after Love's final TD scamper says it all.

Bryce Love Highlights vs UCLA // 30 Carries for 263 Yards, 1 TD // 9.23.17 - YouTube

That was also the game when KJ Costello finally got a chance at QB after Chryst and Burns had been ineffective. Stanford won 8 of its next 9 games.

When the Curtice years exiled Stanford to the dumpster Cal Guy became Moses at Stanford. It took awhile (can’t remember how long it took Moses) but it paid off.

Time for another Cal Guy to part the Red Sea. But Pharoah has to be exiled first and would said Cal Guy even take on the journey? Or is Cal Guy waiting for Nebuchadnezzar to fail at the Hanging Gardens of Berkeley?

Yes, though I hate to say it, we were fortunate Chryst went down early in that game.  Costello gave the team a spark; and Bryce Love did the rest.

So Cal Guy #1 is Ralston (erstwhile player and assistant for the Weenies), while Cal Guy #2 must be Taylor (Cal player from 1986-89 and Cal assistant from 1996-2000).  One big difference: Ralston was around 36 when he came to the Farm.  Taylor is already 54, so the big question is how much longer he will be willing to wait for a Division I head coaching job.  He might jump on whichever opportunity presents itself first.  And I tend to think Cal would be willing to part company with Wilcox before Stanford would send Shaw out to pasture.

Many at Cal would indeed "part company" from Wilcox if they could. However, he recently received a contract extension with massive buyout clauses for the next several years. They athletic department doesn't have that kind of money. They would have to get it from donors, and given how those people feel about the AD, they won't get it unless he goes too (with presumably another buyout required). Always possible, but unlikely at the moment.

Speaking of Buyouts; Auburn now has paid/will be paying $21.7 and $15.5 million in payouts to Malzahn and Harsin respectively in the last two plus years.  $37.2 Million is not spare change, even for the spoiled techies.  Where does Auburn come up with that can of coins?  Moonshine? Chewing Tobacco?

Auburn has a very well-known "Big Three" of mega-boosters: Jimmy Rane (lumber), Bobby Lowder (banking), and Raymond Harbert (investment management). All 3 have buildings named after them on campus.

Visiting LA from SEC land. Went to UCLA game which went even worse than I expected on the field, even though I wasn’t expecting much. What is the deal with no band, no Dollie’s and of course very few fans?

Apple's Tim Cook is also an Auburn alum, though I don't think he plunks money in the booster bin.

Cook doesn't  strike me as a "WAR EAGLE!" kind of guy.

Tim  does not strike

Well, there is this.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITelJIPPSC4

And during a visit to Alabama, some Tide fan shouted "Go Bama"; and Cook replied "War Eagle".  Still, it's hard to say how deep the War Eagle goes.

I don't think the Band and Dollies are allowed to travel. Maybe to Big Game in Berkeley, but no overnight road trips.

The number of fans at the game (which included Samuel McF and me) was proportional to the expectations about the game. There was not even an SAA tailgate.
