Patently untrue. Kelly was given an ultimatum by the AD (along with immense pressure from boosters) to clean house precisely because of how disastrous that year was. It was him or his staff.

Turns out having an AD who cares what the boosters think and actually watches the on-field product critically is helpful in this kind of situation.

I've been banging this drum ever since it happened.

OK, but really, does it matter who demands changes as long as they are made?  And I'm sorry, but Brain Kelly has built multiple programs into winners.  He knows what it takes to win and is not one who accepts losing.  He might have been pressured to make changes, but I'm sure he didn't fight it, asked for a bigger coaching staff budget got it, and gladly obliged.

It does matter who initiated the changes. A competent management team can make a big difference when a manager (read coach) is struggling. Stanford not only has a caoching failure but one at the AD level.

Curious about the Chron's the use of green paper for Sports section of the newspaper.  Anybody knows the history behind this?

The green paper started in the early 1900’s as a tool in the circulation wars of those days.  They stopped using actual green paper about 50 years ago, because of costs and the new use of color pictures.  For years, they just put a splash on green of the first sports page.  About 20 years ago, with modern color printing technology, they used green ink to return the first sports page to green.

(In the old days, the pink section of the Chronicle was printed on pink paper.

I still have one of the old Saturday's Chron on Big Game Day. All green and featured Bill Leiser's BG chronology. He leaned a bit toward Stanford amid a staff who bled Blue. Probably eight pages of BG facts and features. It was the sports event of the year in the Bay Area. Now hardly anybody cares.

FWIW, the Milwaukee Journal used to have a "Green Sheet" printed on green paper. It carried the comics, a few columns such as local humor ("Slightly Kloss Eyed" by Gerald Kloss) and advice (Mrs. Griggs was Milwaukee's answer to Dear Abby), crossword puzzle, etc. Always the first section a kid wanted to look at.

The pressure must be getting to Shaw. He has been arrogant before and often unaware of his shortcomings but I have never heard him get snippy with a reporter before.

This may be the end for a decent man who could not be truthful with himself. I always wonder if he had fully reevaluated things after the 2019 season whether things could have been different. When he made no changes to an obviously deficient coaching staff after the 2021 season I knew he was cooked. The question now is when does he get pulled out of the oven.

What would be the rationale for this? How does it make sense to "get one more year," exactly?  I mean if you are saying "one more year" you are effectively already showing you don't have confidence. Why do you want someone in charge who doesn't have your confidence? Makes zero sense.

Brian Kelly went 4-8, cleaned house, and returned to Top 10 status. But these changes came from himself, not after being pressured to make changes. Jim Harbaugh is another one. He makes changes proactively and is always looking to improve.

I've never in my memory seen a coach pressured into making coaching staff changes ever turn things around because the fact he didn't do it himself demonstrates he isn't fit for the job. Shaw proved he was unfit when he made zero changes after last season. That was proof Stanford Football isn't being led by serious people and why I stopped taking the program seriously.

I’m just stating my guess as to what will happen.  Not what should happen.

I still have the Sun Chron/Examiner sports page from ‘70 after Stanford beat SC. “Plunkett Keeps His Promise.”

Walsh used to smirk.  Was as smug as they come - according to any non- Stanford/Niner fan.

He should go.  I agree with folks on that.  The personal attacks are, imo, a bit off putting.

I'll put it at 100 to 1.

First question: Who has the power and cares enough about football at Stanford to fire Shaw?

Second question: Even assuming such a person exists, who is ponying up the tens of millions to pay his buyout???

Sure, Shaw could come to the realization that he's not the right person for the job and walk away on his own, admitting failure and forfeiting a ton of money. Don't hold your breath on that one.

i'm reminded of the San Diego State game in 2017, which we lost 20-17.  several SDSU players were laughing it up in the first half, since it was obvious to all that Shaw hadn't prepared his offense for what the Aztecs were bringing.  Shaw lost his temper at them, saying something to the effect of, "You are representatives of your university, blah blah blah."

I remember that game. Take away three long runs by Bryce Love and the offense did virtually nothing the entire game (except set up an SDSU touchdown with an interception deep in our own territory). So as you say, it was pretty obvious the offense wasn't prepared.

Been that way since I’ve lived here. That would be around 1973. The Sporting Green is a tradition. No idea why.

This game should be the last milepost before the end of the trail.  Time for David to go.

Always respected women who played on men's teams. I remember playing golf against a girl in high school, her name was Juli Simpson. I shot a 94 against her in a match at Pasatiempo. She shot a 76. Today, her name is Juli Inkster...

Your comment on the AD makes my point.  I don’t know how many frequent this board or the other Stanford board, but my guess is if a poll were taken the results would be unanimous that Shaw should go.  Season ticket holders have spoken with there non renewals.  Others have spoken. With their absence.  Yet, I fear it won’t matter.  I hope I’m wrong.  Because otherwise, it is confirmation that the Admin does not care.

One wild card - the players. If there is a mass exodus, the Administration may not be able to ignore it.  They may have to act.

I wasn't going to comment on the Stanford Football catastrafuck, but this comment is a catalyst to do so because I had another related thought.

I've never in my history of observing College Football seen a situation like Stanford has created for itself. It's always been a safe assumption that - just like all decisions are made based on money - every school will act when their football program hits rock bottom, and the coach can't even beat their rival anymore.

Stanford is turning this assumption on its head. It's like nobody is home and/or nobody cares in a decision-making position at the school when things hit rock bottom. It's unprecedented to have a school be so indifferent to losing and embarrassing while doing so.

Here's my belief:  If Shaw isn't fired on November 27, all the recruits in the next recruiting class should call Muir and say they aren't signing with Stanford unless a coaching change is made. They aren't coming to play for David Shaw. They are coming to get a Stanford degree and maybe prepare for the NFL.

The players on the current team could all threaten to transfer, but I'm sure they buy into the litany of excuses like "injuries" and "we lack depth" and more importantly will want their Stanford degrees especially if they had to put up with lousy coaching and indifference to their sport for several years.

I'm basically saying the only ones who care enough to force Stanford to take football seriously are the players yet to step on campus. But, honestly, if it takes people not yet on Stanford's campus to force changes, the school should just fold the program. Nobody who cares so little should have the opportunity to have a major college football team, and even if they were to make a change, who would have any confidence a good coach that would be supported by the school could possibly be hired?

Yep

The big issue now is that big time college football is at least semi-professional, I do not foresee the University changing its entrance requirements or its transfer rules significantly.  We will remain an attractive destination for those athletes for whom a Stanford Education is more important that professional sport aspirations.  We cannot go out an reload via the waiver wire.  We may be able to be reasonably competitive in terms of NIL but not transfers.  We may well end up with some halfway decent teams now and then, but if we aren't willing to play by the same rules employed by USC, Oregon and other schools in the conference it is unlikely we will compete for conference championships in major sports on a consistent basis.
