When I was growing up we had only 5 digits in our telephone number, 8-2859. I'm not sure I ever knew how one would dial a long distance number. I don't think I made a long distance call until after they had added area codes and full prefix, the current 10-digit format.

I knew my area code and prefix, but so long as we were calling locally we only needed 5 digits.

And here I thought area codes on helmets were to help remind the transfers where they were playing this year.

Found this interesting tidbit on wiki which brings us back to sports:
Quote:In December 1942, University of Tennessee's strategy in an American football game versus University of Mississippi was revealed to the opposing coach as a telephone on the Ole Miss team's bench had been inadvertently wired to the same party line.
Can you imagine being on the Mississippi bench, picking up the phone expecting to talk to yout own coaches, and instead hearing your opponent discussing all the ins and outs of their strategy!
Meanwhile, for those who didn't like Glenn Miller's immortalization of a telephone exchange, I bring you the Marvelettes:

Prior to the Brit Invasion, I was a MoTown kid in high school. Loved the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves (and the Vandellas)...and Marvin Gaye was
The Man.

In ‘67, my senior year in HS, I saw the Four Tops at Basin Street West in SF and Martha Reeves was in the audience. A great show…..
