Bingo.  He was the one I missed (shouldn’t have).   Murphy fell 2 HRs short.

Trees down everywhere. Both our exits closed. PG&E overwhelmed. Hoping to get out tomorrow to have an extra day in Santa Clara prepping for Niners/Cards.

We lost a giant Laurel which the kids used to swing over the canyon below. They could get about 30' into the air but we've been worried about it for years. Whew, missed our writers cottage.

Very little computer time with no power. Rigged a Yeti and will have about an hour.

Good guess Mick... 1946. 115 wins and perhaps the all time ML attendance. Sal Taormina played on that team and on the'57 winners. Coached at Santa Clara when I played at State. Got a recruiting visit from SC coach Paddy Cottrell but nothing came of it.

it's kinda fun being banned. Just like JUG at SI.

Didnt realize SI had JUGs (Judgment Under God) too, though it makes sense. My sons never had one, and I always wondered what happened to the students who received weekend jugs. I found out when I volunteered to help out at at BCP track meet. I ran the long jump, which meant I had to oversee two sullen, unhappy BCP students whose job it was to rake the long jump pit flat after every competitor's jump.  A little over 100 competitors, three jumps each, 300+ rakes, and yours truly had to admonish them when it wasn't raked flat enough.

I have raked many a long jump triple jump pit. Always fun

RE: Sports Trivia 2023 - Mick - 01-05-2023

When was the last man killed by a grizzly bear in California, what was his name, and what was his connection to Stanford?

JUG was a new one on me, though I went to a Jesuit university. This article suggests a different etymology: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/opinions/1996/03/16/who-got-jug/3af1ad57-ccfd-4f3d-981b-7f294fda7bc8/

Yep.  Six HOFers plus one (Jones) who might be elected later this month.

Great question!
Don Drysdale comes to mind immediately.  I'll have to think a bit harder to come up with more.

I thought this was fun trivia. If you've been to the Pacific Ocean coast where Santa Cruz County meets San Mateo County, you've seen Waddell Creek. William W. Waddell (not William B. Waddell, founder of the Pony Express) had made a fortune in Missouri, lost it, and in 1861 moved to what is now Big Basin State Redwood Park where he commenced building a logging operation, along with chutes and two piers. In 1875, he was the last Californian mauled by a grizzly bear. He survived long enough to make it to a doctor, but succumbed to his injuries.
William Waddell's Arm

The logging business fell apart, and farmers took over the Waddell Watershed. In 1912, Thomas Hoover, the Dean of Stanford's Engineering school and brother to Herbert Hoover, purchased property from a dozen of those farmers and built several houses for his family. The Hoover family kept the housing until donating everything to the oldest state park in California -- the Big Basin Redwood State Park and the Sempervirens Fund in 1977, which is adjacent to the Thomas J. Hoover Natural Preserve.

On idyllic days, my buddies and I would get an inflatable raft, pack up some refreshments and paddle up the creek as far as we could go. Great times.
