Quote: This puts Stanford ahead by 120.5 with outdoor T&F and baseball left. Still assuming Texas wins the women's T&F, Stanford has a 20.5 point lead.
(But I will point out that there is both Men's and Women's T&F as well as baseball.  Texas scored 253 points in those 3 sports last year.)

If a Mod can edit that post, can you make the table to use fixed-width font?

Also note that post's Fall Total,  etc. shows fewer points than was announced at the end of the fall, because Stanford points were reduced per the stupid rules.
At the end of the Fall, Stanford had 330 points (now 280).  At the end of Winter, 578 points (now 490),
There are just not that many unknowns left.   Texas plays Stanford in baseball.   So if Stanford wins the super its over.   Sadly we live in doomsday world on this board.

Could Texas really do well in the CWS?  Anything is possible, but there are a lot of teams that have simply should prevail over a lucky to be there type team.

Men's T&F.   Here it is easy.   A Texas athlete seems destined to win the decathlon later tonight, but there are just not a lot of other points available for Texas men.  They have two athletes in the 800M and a few athletes in field events with personal bests well below the top athletes.    So Texas probably can get to 20 points overall, but not much beyond that.   That probably will mean a 10th-15th type finish.    They just don't have enough athletes in finals to really get more.

Ultimately a Stanford team can remove the uncertainty by winning at Sunken Diamond.   That feels like a fair deal IMHO.   I like the idea that a Stanford team can literally eliminate Texas in the cup by eliminating Texas in baseball.

In the Capital One Cup the Stanford Men have a solid lead. The Stanford Women are 2nd close to first

A win by either team is a guaranteed difference of T7th (73pts) vs T9th(64pts), so a swing of 18 points (up to a swing of 72 points).

The T&F championship ends Saturday.  At that point, we'll know whether this weekend's baseball games will tell the difference.

Bob, according to the website, Stanford men are in 11th place pending baseball and T&F results. The Stanford women are in 3rd behind UNC and Texas but this may not yet include softball. Date of last update is June 4. Note that softball points are determined by the final USA Today/NFCA D1 Softball poll (i.e., the coaches poll), not by the NCAA tournament results.

Very close to clinching the director's cup for the year. May know as early as tomorrow, if the Texas women's T&F team doesn't win it all, assuming this source is accurate. https://twitter.com/Direct_Cupdates/status/1667378982289850368?s=20

RE: Directors' Cup 2022-23 - bnarver - 06-09-2023

My numbers are very close to that, but a little lower.  I have Stanford at 1332. Third place in men's T&F is worth 85 points.  Need to drop beach volleyball at 60 points. 1307+85-60 = 1332. With a minimum of 64 points for making it into the super regional, that would bring Stanford's total up to 1396.  The Texas men came in 13th, so that's worth 63 points.  That brings them up to 1249.5.  If Texas wins the women's T&F, that gives them 100 points, but they have to drop women's CC, 43 points.  So Texas would have 1249.5+100-43 = 1306.5.  Stanford would be up by 89.5 points.  Texas would need to finish at least 2nd in baseball.  Mind you, my numbers have not been checked, so if anybody wants to question them, I won't mind in the slightest.

[Edit (Sunday 1PM): Spreadsheet & Stanford totals (if it were defeated at the Baseball Super Regionals) corrected. Thanks to BigEasyCard for the correction.]

I separately calculated the scoring, after Texas got 1st in WT&F and Stanford got 20th.

If Texas were to beat Stanford in the Super Regionals and win the MCWS, then my calculations indicate Stanford beats Texas in the Director's Cup by scores of 1404.50 (after deducting 359 points) to 1394.50 (after deducting 43 points).

Too bad I can't attach the spreadsheet.... Here's the image of it
[Image: Directors-Cup2023-20230610.jpg]

Both schools got 17th place in WSoccer.  But Texas gets 50 points while Stanford has to drop it (so little schools like UTexas aren't disadvantaged by big schools like Stanford).
Stanford had to drop the points for a 13th place finish in Women's Cross Country while Texas was allowed points for 18th in Men's Cross Country.

But, poor UTexas has only a $200M athletic budget.

Baseball just clinched the Director's Cup for Stanford!

By the same logic, baseball just clinched the sun rising tomorrow.
By my spreadsheet above, it was the M T&F that clinched it, if you want to claim that for the team that happened to score the points when they became sufficient to guarantee the win, with other teams' (baseball) guaranteed positions. Stanford could have lost the Super Regionals and still would have won the Director's Cup even if UT won the MCWS.

But, in my book, I'd take my hat off first to the M Gym, W WP,  and the Rowing teams, and to all the other athletes who participated, whether their team's points contributed to the final total or not.

25 teams scored for Stanford.  In other years, and hopefully in the near future, we may again get points from MWP, WFH, WLAX, MVB, MBB, and FB teams.   Not all years do all teams score, and some years, some of Stanford's traditionally great teams stumble a bit, but Stanford demonstrably has the most diverse, most consistent, highest quality set of NCAA teams.  The last two years, UTexas didn't hold a candle to Stanford except by the handicap leveled against Stanford.

The future will be tougher for Stanford against the free agent teams of the rest of the NCAA.  (A preseason look indicated "Wake [Forest baseball] added six transfers for the upcoming ’22-’23 season, all of whom will be coming from the D1 level.")  UTexas's $200M athletic budget, plus donor money, could buy them as many top teams as Stanford has, but they haven't gotten there yet.

RE: Directors' Cup 2022-23 - cardfan77 - 06-13-2023

It’s just incredible what Stanford athletes continue to do. Stanford continues to attract talented and gifted young men and women despite the high academic standards and very limited NIL. The fact that Stanford rarely benefits from the transfer portal but continues to be competitive is a feat that not many schools can claim.

I know that our Football team and men’s basketball are suffering. Nevertheless, I will always continue to be extremely proud of our teams and athletes. They embody the true essence of student athletes

All right now! Such great news, whichever of our many successful sports deserves the credit. I'd tip my (baseball) cap to our baseball team, if nothing else because they stuck the dagger in Texas directly to definitively synch the win. That's great stuff, and gritty to come back after that disastrous 9th inning in the opener.

After a few (on a relative basis) tough years to be a Stanford fan, past few months have really felt great, and thanks to everyone across all our sports threads for keeping up the in depth discussions and updates.

No, M T&F did not clinch the cup for Stanford.  It was baseball beating Texas.  If Texas had won, Stanford could have still won the Cup, but only with the help of other teams.  As of today, the current standings have Texas with 1306.5 points and Stanford with 1339 points.  If Texas had beaten Stanford, Stanford would have received 64 points, giving them 1403 points.  If Texas had won the CWS, they would have received 100 points and finished with 1406.5 points.  So, other teams would have had to give Texas 2 losses, ensuring that Texas would have received no more than 90 points.

RE: Directors' Cup 2022-23 - Spiny_Norman - 06-13-2023

Stanford finished 4th in the final softball poll (which is how the Capital One Cup awards softball points). This should be enough for the Stanford women to secure the Capital One Cup.

The men will be close as well. Their 3rd place performance in Outdoor T&F should move them up into a position where they can win the Capital One Cup with a good showing at the CWS.

You are correct; my spreadsheet was wrong.  I erred when I transcribed a score.

I also made an error in that the BVB tournament in 2023 did not have an elimination bracket, which changed the score for Stanford in 5th (where I used last year's 5th place points).

So, congratulations to Baseball which indeed did clinch the Director's Cup win.

RE: Directors' Cup 2022-23 - fullmetal - 06-13-2023

I don't think my statement that baseball clinched the Cup in any way represents a disrespect to other point-scoring teams at Stanford who have contributed.  You can guess correctly that of the Stanford teams, baseball isn't even my first allegiance.  I'm just saying that as a Stanford fan who watched the Director's Cup point totals come down to the wire, it was pretty exciting that the Cup has been secured again after an unlucky season last year from many teams.
