https://www.on3.com/nil/news/premium-on-linemen-defensive-offensive-tackle-nil-collective-transfer-portal/

Speaking to a number of operators in the space, On3 has learned the going rate for a starting offensive tackle or defensive linemen could start as low as $75,000 to $125,000 annually. Realistically, it’s only an initial number.

With teams desperate to land talent on the line, the number likely balloons. For an elite EDGE rusher, the starting price jumps to at least $200,000 and could easily reach $300,000. And all those numbers are before an athlete or their agent starts pitting schools against each other.
Thank you for opening my eyes to this, Cctop.  This is just revolting.  Non-profit, educational institutions shelling out more money for a defensive lineman than they pay to assistant professors really puts things in perspective.  Not that Stanford is quite there yet.  Oh, but of course the universities are not directly involved at all in paying their players, are they?

otoh quite a few stanford faculty supplement their professorships (or assistant professorships) with industry consulting that pays several times their salary and with start-up founder positions that end up paying out 10 to 20 x their salary. perhaps we could consider these the edge rushers of stanford faculty.

Just what exactly is it about NIL that is revolting to you? I personally find it refreshing that players, many of whom come from very, very poor backgrounds, are finally able to earn the fair market value for their talent.

Is it revolting that a big pocketed booster is motivated to shell out six figures for an EDGE rusher instead of gifting that amount to an associate professor? Perhaps. However, that’s symptomatic of society at large in my opinion. I certainly don’t think it’s appropriate to judge these players or label them as mercenaries.

Yes, and considering the state of humanity the best and brightest have given us to this point in the human story, I'm not sure the Edge rusher isn't a better use of money for society than the university researcher anyway.

Unfortunately, I have a pretty jaded view of society today.  Too many people are into whatever they are into for the money, it is always about the money.  I say being a professor at Stanford is playing in the big leagues.  You are going to have the best opportunities to consult, advise startups, gather stock options on the cheap and make a lot of money.  Not much different from a 5 star edge rusher who goes where he can get the most money.  How many of professors who avail themselves the opportunities working at Stanford provides, would really rather go and work at Idaho State University in Pocatello?  How many of today's politicians run for office to serve their country or their state rather than to grab all the money they can through their position? They may start out for other reasons, but politics is the big corrupter

"A sister collective, Cardinal One, paid each of the men's basketball players $50,000 at the outset of the 2022-2023 season."  Whoa.  I'm wondering how the women's basketball team received this news and how the players felt about it.  I'm wondering if Tara advocated for her team members to receive the same or decided to not pursue it.  There's been so much speculation over Lauren Betts and other players entering the portal - how could this not have been a big factor?  50 years of Title IX at Stanford - ugh.

I'm empathetic to the concerns of gender equity here. However, if these NIL collectives are operating outside the control of the university, I don't see any way to mandate equal payments to the women's team. I would assume some MBB players could get more than others, just like some of the FB players are getting more. That said, if a benefactor felt that the departure of Betts and others was due to insufficient NIL payments and wanted to change that, they could easily justify making higher NIL payments to the WBB then MBB.

just a guess, but i would think the donors that endow professorships likely won't change course. the donors that support the athletics department might well shift some money to nil. so it will cost athletics administration rather than academic faculty.

This Athletic article is behind a paywall but was eye-opening for me. College QBs stay in college, make projected-draft-slot-money in NIL, and try to improve slot next year...

Yep.  Uncontrolled Free Agency.

RE: NIL Lifetime Cardinal - Maple Leaf - 04-25-2023

The combination of the transfer portal/free agency coupled with the NIL have created such a dynamic environment of college recruiting, some high school kids will get offers/deals and other kids will have to wait and wait in hopes they just can get offered an athletic scholarship someplace.  I bet Reggie Bu$h and many of his $C buddies are asking where was this went we were playing for the condom$.

as of yesterday

https://theathletic.com/4447590/2023/04/24/deion-sanders-colorado-footall-transfer-portal/

Colorado has 46 entrants to the portal, if they all leave they will have 20 returning players from last year's roster

RE: NIL Lifetime Cardinal - GK3 - 04-25-2023

The mess opens up a whole knew area of study for the law schools.  Think about how much money is out there, all the possibilities to file complaints of one kind or another, agency, money management etc.  How many of these kids who get the big money before moving on to the NFL will have any of it 10 years down the road?

C’mon Goose, you know better than that. 9/10 of these players aren’t actually doing any extra promotional work beyond their team obligations.

I think mentioned before. Where's the equity? Fifty years of Title IX have equalized scholarship and other opportunities for women in college sports. How, and when, will it improve NIL for women and by connection, impact NIL for men?

NIL "obligations" will be like the Oklahoma football players in the 80s getting Summer jobs watching over oil fields.
