The Avital quarter! A handful of great blocks (penalty, and a couple of 1-on-goalie blocks)
Stanford 8 - USC 5
RE: WWP: NCAA championships - Softball Fan - 05-14-2023
At end of third quarter Stanford up 8-5. Stanford goalie in a zone; MVP if Stanford wins.

Better third quarter. 8-5 Stanford after 3. Watching ESPiNU now (thanks M T).

Looked like USC player tried to drown a Stanford player. Should have been thrown out of game. Stanford player didn't retaliate.
10-8 with two minutes left in game.
This is a more physical sport than WBB.

Stanford wins 11-9. 24-1 on the year, including 3-1 record over USC.
Stanford pulled away 10-6, but then had some poor offense that lead to turnovers. USC got within 1 at 10-9 with 1:11 left.
Stanford had to play offense again, and got the put-it-away goal at 0:50 seconds left.
Down 2, under a minute, USC didn't really have a chance at that point.
Power plays:
Stanford 4/12 (two of which were essentially consecutive; one was a true 6 on 4)
USC 6/16
I don't think Stanford ever won the sprint in any game against USC.

Yes!!! Another championship.

That got exciting at the end. Who paid for the fireworks?

That player who tried to drown Aria Fischer was playing extremely physical, borderline dirty throughout the match. I’m glad she was dq’d

What a game! Didn't want to post anything and jinx it. The team played great, except for a few boneheaded plays in the last few minutes. Refs clearly didn't help, but a brobdingnagian game from Maya Avital, and the best I've seen her play. She was the difference today. Jewel Roemer had a great day, as well. Congrats to the girls!

It's a more physical sport than rugby, and it's played in the water. . . . .

The NCAA has a page that had "live" updates
https://www.ncaa.com/live-updates/waterpolo-women/nc/live-updates-2023-womens-water-polo-championship
At the end of the third quarter, the author wrote "Ten minutes left to go to decide the 2023 champion." Uh, quarters are 8 minutes. I guess whoever they had doing this doesn't know the sport.
The game can be found at
espn.com/watch
Stanford's WP twitter feed with at least some clips is at

I'm surprised, but the stats show no red cards. The player was given a major foul (ie, an ejection), but no red card.

Well, there is a two minute break between quarters ;-) . . . .

There was a
nice little article in the SF Chronicle.
From GoStanford. I'm sorry, but Maya Avital was robbed by not being named to the All-Tournament Team. She had 11 saves against USC. (Wow, Princeton got 2 players on the First Team All-tournament team.) (Wow, USC got one more player on the All-tournament teams than Stanford did.)
All-Tournament Team (Most Valuable Player): Aria Fischer (Stanford)
All-Tournament Team (First Team): Aria Fischer (Stanford), Paige Hauschild (USC), Ava Johnson (UCLA), Tilley Kearns (USC), Lindsey Lucas (Princeton),
Ryann Neushul (Stanford), Jovanna Sekulic (Princeton)
All-Tournament Team (Second Team): Katrina Drake (UCLA), Elena Flynn (UC Irvine), Daphne Guervremont (Fresno State),
Jewel Roemer (Stanford), Carolyne Stern (USC), Razanne Voorvelt (California), Bayley Weber (USC).

Agree that Maya was robbed, however, she only played one quarter during the first round blowout of Biola. Perhaps that was the consideration, albeit a bad one. . . .
