This means they are made comfortable with mediocrity and indifference to winning. Coaches who win a little get massive guaranteed contracts and are lauded by the fan base. There is no pressure to perform at all. It's easy to slide into your comfort zone. Sound familiar?
Wilcox turned down Oregon for Cal. Maybe Cal feeds his soul, but nobody who is all about winning is picking Cal over Oregon.
While I agree with the sentiment, and the "official" story being Wilcox turning down Oregon, those in the know know better: Wilcox was never offered the Oregon job. His agent did a great job drumming up a story to get him said massive guaranteed extension.

The list since Snyder tells us a lot about Cal’s awful football fortunes.
Keith Gilbertson was a very good coordinator. He was a terrible head coach. I believe it’s called The Peter Principal. He was a miserable failure at UW as the head man as well.
Steve Mariucci showed some promise but got an offer he couldn’t refuse from SF.
Tom Holmoe should never have been hired as the head coach. His inability to properly manage his staff led to disastrous results. Conflict resolution was not in his skill set.
Jeff Tedford ruined his health by working around the clock. He struggled with delegation and no coach can succeed long term if he doesn’t trust his staff.
Sonny Dykes had no interest in staying at Cal any longer than he had to. He was always on the hunt for another job, preferably one in Texas. He left as soon as he could (yes, he was fired but he set things up to get terminated, collect some money and go back to Texas). He was an awful hire.
Justin Wilcox, another Gilbertson, a very good coordinator, a lousy head coach. The proof is in the results.
Cal will never achieve long term success until they hire a guy who has a successful track record at a major program. Since that isn’t going to happen, Cal will never rise above mediocrity for any length of time.

Fixed it for you. Success at a major program doesn't translate to success at Cal. Exactly what does, if anything, is at this time unknown. IMO it requires somebody who can adapt to the unique social and political situation at UCB while also possessing a great football mind and the ability to extract good performance out of a staff that isn't really "up to par" with "major programs". Can it be done? Short term, maybe. Long term, no. But how many programs achieve "long term" (say > 5 years in a row of top 10) anyway?

Can’t argue with that…..

Not sure there is anything “unique “ about the political/social situation. What is, and has been a problem for a long time is an Administration that doesn’t care about football. Unless that changes, mediocrity is a stretch…..

One way to overcome administrative indifference is paying cold, hard cash to get better players. Cal has donors who are doing just this. I don't have much insight into how big-pocketed they are or how many there are, but it does seem the natives realize their emperors have no clothes when it comes to the sports they care about, and they are taking matters into their own hands.
As was obvious would happen, the donors are taking their money to the NIL collective and withholding it from the Athletic Department they have - no reason to - have faith in. Cal will still get donations by ransoming off access to the better seats at games, but the days of being able to fleece donors for a shit product are over for Cal's athletics administration.

This is my hope against hope for TT's success at Stanford. He sniffed something in the administration that convinced him to accept the Post Shaw Reclamation Project on the the Farm. Doubt a coach of his caliber, with HC skins on the wall, would have come aboard if it were otherwise. Seems to have shown his convictions to the '24 recruit class, too. If he can steal 3 good W's this season beyond Hawaii and Sac State, the buzz will be audible.

I believe you've forgotten the tax treatment of that money as being different.

Are you insinuating Cal donors won’t donate because there is no tax break for NIL collective contributions?I’ve never seen anyone comment that they wouldn’t donate because there is no tax break. Cal people are more interested in winning than tax write-offs. And they are most interested in not enabling incompetence like Jim Knowlton. Of course so too are donors at other schools ponying up cash for player. It may very well be that Cal remains behind the curve since just because they are paying, it doesn’t mean others aren’t offering more.
