RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - bbm233 - 04-23-2024

I will block my calendar for an afternoon at Tumble Creek/Suncadia if that's where they are assigned. Golf in the wooded foothills of the Cascades!

The key to team stroke play success is one low score and then the rest shooting par. Love that Xu showed she can go low today. All five of the starters can get on a birdie run. I like their chances.

Congrats to the team on forever being the reigning Pac 12 champs!

and all 5 golfers in the top 16, essentially a third of the top 16!

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 04-23-2024

I think this was an important result for the team. They had not really had a great spring. UCLA beat Stanford at the P12 Preview, Stanford won the Juli Inkster Invitational against a weak field and then Stanford finished 5th at the PING/ASU tournament. Stanford remained #1 in the country based on a strong showing in the fall.

Moreover Rachel Heck, the senior leader of the team, had played in only 1 tournament all spring. She tied for 36th. Her senior year scoring average was nearly 3 shots higher than the average of her prior years. She was struggling.

I think the team gained some (needed) momentum and confidence. And they certainly stabilized the lineup. There should be no doubt about the top 5 given Heck's play.

We'll see how that translates into results at regionals. We of course want to see them play well and win. But the main goal is to finish in the top 5 and advance to the NCAAs.

Stanford is the top seed at the Cle Elum regional! Hope that you can make it, bbm233.

Stanford begins the postseason tomorrow at Tumble Creek in Cle Elum, WA. I don't know much about the golf course itself. But the playing conditions will be very tough. Periods of rain, temperatures in the 40s with a strong NW wind will make it a big challenge. Coach Walker should feel right at home, like a winter round on a Scottish course.

Stanford will be in the first group off starting at 9 am pacific. The lineup will be the same players as for P12s - Martin Sampedro, Ganne, Xu, Englemann and Heck.

You can follow scoring here - https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=29164

Remember the goal is to place in the top 5 and advance to nationals.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 05-06-2024

Stanford sits in 2nd place after round 1.

1. Duke -6
2. Stanford -4
3. ASU even par
4. Virginia +1

Stanford was led by Paula Martin Sampedro who recorded a 4 under 68. It would have been even better if not for a double bogey late in the round. Kelly Xu played solidly in recording 70. Rachel Heck converted 2 late birdies to get to even par. Megha Ganne started strong, then sputtered home with a back nine 40. She is at 74. Sadie Englemann was playing from behind after double bogey on her first hole. She shot 76 and was the drop score.

Thanks, fixed!

And for those who might be interested, at least Stanford is not playing at the regional in College Station or Las Vegas. Both courses seem to have some maintenance and playability issues.

Goose poop?  They're worried about goose poop?!  Head on over to Baylands -- or, even worse, Shoreline -- and you quickly learn to deal with goose poop...

Heck with a 65.  Wowser
Stanford with a brobdingnagian lead over the 6th place team

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 05-07-2024

Stanford made a strong statement today. The statement is Rachel Heck is back and Stanford will be a serious contender at NCAAs when it plays like it did today.

On a day with tough playing conditions (temperatures in the 40s and 50s, northwest winds 10-20 mph), Stanford was rock solid. The team posted a score of -14 on a day when no other team was under par.

The team was led by Rachel Heck who posted a bogey-free 65 (-7)!! This may have been one of her best ever rounds as a Cardinal. She is now 1 stroke behind teammate Paula Martin Sampedro who shot 68 and is the overall individual leader. In 3rd place is Kelly Xu after a 69. Yes, Stanford is 1-2-3 on the individual scoreboard. Sadie Englemann was steady at 72. And Megha Ganne was Stanford's drop score at 73 (which included a 33 on the back 9).

Stanford now leads 2nd place Duke by 12 shots and 3rd place Virginia by 27(!) shots. There is no question that Stanford will advance to the NCAAs by finishing in the top 5. The team's challenge tomorrow will be to stay focused and continue to play the game that was so successful today.

So nice to see Rachel post a score like that, nothing but birdies and pars under tough conditions.

Rachel leading by five strokes!!!

Stanford showed it has to be the top contender for the stroke play portion of the upcoming national championship tournament. Here are the winners of each region and their margin over 2nd place and 6th place (first team out).

Auburn: 4 strokes, 18 strokes
USC: 4 strokes, 12 strokes
LSU: 4 strokes, 19 strokes
Miss: 1 stroke, 24 strokes
Arkansas: 4 strokes, 16 strokes
Stanford: 18 strokes, 53 strokes

Eye popping domination.

Rachel Heck was the individual title by 4 strokes Stanford places 4 golfers in the top 5. In a sport where you only count 4 scores, this is domination. Hope we don't peak too early.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf Spring 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 05-08-2024

Stanford has wrapped up the regional championship and punched its ticket to La Costa in 2 weeks next week.

Round 3 presented the toughest scoring conditions of the week. The wind was reported to have been milder today. My guess is that they sped up the greens.

Stanford posted the lowest score of the day at +1. For the 3rd consecutive day, they were led by a different player. Megha Ganne caught fire on the back 9, shooting a 31 (-5) for a round of 67. Rachel Heck and Kelly Xu were steady at 71 and 73 respectively. Paula Martin Sampedro and Sadie Englemann both were wobbly at 78. Need to clean that up for NCAAs.

Overall, Stanford players were 1, 2, T3 and T3:
1. Heck -8
2. Xu -4
T3. Martin Sampedro -2
T3. Ganne -2

Across the other regionals, the results were pretty much chalk. UCLA (ranked 4th), South Carolina (2nd), Northwestern (8th) and Texas A&M (12th) all had to sweat out their final rounds, but all eventually qualified. Arizona at 16th is the highest ranked team not to make it.

After 2 consecutive tournaments in the cold and wind of central and eastern Washington, Stanford now will look forward to mild, seaside conditions on a newly renovated course at La Costa near San Diego for the NCAAs. It has been closed for over a year for reconstruction so no one has played this course before. No one has a feel for the greens and how the course will play. It will be interesting indeed to see how the players react and adjust.

What's happening with/to Englemann? She seems to be in a slump lately.

She slumped at the ASU tournament and had an even rougher tournament at Augusta. But it seemed that maybe she was recovering her form at P12s where she finished 11th after back-to-back 69s. But whatever the problem, she is still fighting it. She has about a week to work things out.

I said above that the NCAAs are 2 weeks out. They actually start NEXT Friday, May 17. Practice round on Thursday, May 16. So not much time to rest from regionals and recharge for the most exhausting 6 days in women's college sports - 4 rounds of stroke play followed by a double round of match play (quarterfinals and semifinals), before wrapping up with the finals. Stanford, especially Rose Zhang, hit the wall in the semis last year vs. USC. I think that Coach Walker is taking an approach this year to help the team be fresher going into the NCAAs.

It seems pretty clear that Rachel has solved whatever issues she was dealing with.  Stanford has 5 solid players, all of whom can go low on a given day.  I really hope they go on to win the whole thing.  It would be a great send off to a great golfer and a woman destined for better things, Rachel Heck.
Then you have to consider the incoming class for next year.  I think Coach has evolved Women's Golf into something like Women's Tennis.  The best want to come to Stanford. Softball may not be too far behind.
Hadn't thought about it until I read the article on Stanford Website. Having to stay home and watch the matches on golfstat and root for her friends from long distance must have been very hard for such a competitive person. She sure seems to have found her game again and I imagine it is the result of lots and lots of hours on the range and working with her coaches. The trainers I am sure desrve a hand for getting all the way back physically.
