I probably added the most fuel to the sandstone fire, but was trying to keep it completely apolitical. Asked and (since I know how to clean sandstone) answered, simple as that. At the risk of venturing into politics, I felt, but didn't say, that cleaning the sandstone might be one of the most important things about this incident, particularly when you read about reaction to what the graffiti says. They've already covered it with something like butcher paper judging from the Page 1 article in today's paper. They defaced an engraved memorial to service members who died in service to their country. The graffiti needs to be permanently erased.
And to complete the SSPC (NACE International/Society for Protective Coatings Joint Surface Preparation Standards) loop, because I know you are all rivetted by the topic, there is indeed an SSPC - SP11. That's Bare Metal Power Tool Cleaning. Used where abrasive blast cleaning is not possible. Still down to a surface smoothness of 1 mil (25 microns). In fact, SSPC goes all the way to SP16 - which is Brush-off Blast Cleaning of Non-Ferrous Metals, which now that I see it in print again, I'm sure I've specified at least once. We just spec whatever is required per the coating manufacturers.
I have a good friend who retired as a mover. He parked his large moving van on the street in the Sunset. Tags over tags over tags. All exposed surfaces including the roof. He gave up trying to clean it. Then suddenly no more tags. He was at a job in the City and a passer by told him that he should be honored to have so and so's art work on his truck. "Huh" "Yeah, no one tags over so and so." There's a code, you know.
I mean my going for king of all paint preparation specification nerds is sort of an actual discussion, right?
Right. I can be guilty of overreacting. This perhaps. was one of those times.

So Hoo Tow got a double sandblasting that year.
Qwerty....our classmate and my dormmate, the late, great Ernie Milburn performed that epic feat. He also used to roam the attics of the Quad and climbed to the top of MemChu, rappelling down to the interior and playing "Chest Fever" on the mighty Wurlitzer, which got him busted. Ernie was killed in the summer of '68 while free-climbing Half Dome (I believe it was...but someplace in Yosemite).

Now, as I recall, it was El Capitan.
Thanks CI - so this would place the Hoo Tow climb sometime in the 66-68 time frame.
I never knew Ernie, wish I had.

I'm pretty sure it happened early in our freshman year, so Fall '66. I suppose we could try and access the Daily morgue but I'm not sure it got covered...at least I don't remember it in the paper.

Sigh …. What were they thinking?
I’m sure these 13 kids were just as excited as we were when admitted; How did that turn to trashing the Presidents office and spray painting “Kill Cops” on the quad sandstone?
Anyone know if there’s a standard penalty if convicted of committing a felony on campus? Or is it up to the university’s discretion?
Also remember media (and certainly the Stanford Review) love extremes and shocking graphics while the wider response is never represented well by the extreme edge. Here’s a more hopeful report from a Stanford professor on how the other 99.8% of campus is reacting to the conflict. This blog depicts a more thoughtful, mature, and dare I say, hopeful response than the actions of the above 13.

The arrested students may soon learn that they are not as entitled as they thought. They're in the criminal justice system now.

good points. I provided the link as I was curious about the composition of the 13. locally (Emory), quite a few arrested protestors did not have an Emory affiliation. the Daily reporter arrest may be an interesting court review.

Curious to see what the outcomes will be for those students. As I gather, Pres Saller and Provost Martinez stated that seniors won't be allowed to graduate, and all students inside the occupied office would be suspended. Also curious to see what their subsequent scholastic and employment opportunities will be.

I can't really get worked up about the dumb rhetoric of some idiot kids, but I'm sure there are better venues than The Cardboard if that's what your interested in.
Fair enough.
I will say that I think this is a bit more than just the “dumb rhetoric of some idiot kids”. But I will say nothing further. I agree, message board in general and the Cardboard specifically are not the place for any actual discussion.
Too funny! You're killing me. . . .

With the intent of providing views for both sides, I hope this posting of these Stanford committee reports helps people to better understand each side. I truly hope this doesn't lead to heated discussions here.
Note that these reports were submitted (May 31) about 5 days before the President's office was occupied (June 5). Obviously the reports don't cover that event. Whether the submission of the report somehow influenced the event or its handling, I have no idea.
June 20, 2024: "
Two reports released on communities significantly impacted by events of Oct. 7 and afterward"
Quote:Two separate committees – the Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian Communities Committee and the Subcommittee on Antisemitism and Anti-Israeli Bias – have each released reports from their seven-month reviews of what people in their communities have experienced before and after the events of Oct. 7, 2023.
...
The reports, delivered to the president and provost on May 31, are each around 150 pages in length and are based on hundreds of hours the committees spent listening to experiences and concerns of Stanford community members.
