RE: WBB: WSU preview and game thread; Th 7pm ACC Extra - martyup - 11-07-2024

Lepolo nails her first 3 pt shot!

Too many TOs in the 2nd Q. Gotta protect the ball.

RE: WBB: WSU preview and game thread; Th 7pm ACC Extra - WBB fan - 11-07-2024

Elena playung very aggressively, fierce for rebounds

RE: WBB: WSU preview and game thread; Th 7pm ACC Extra - martyup - 11-07-2024

Heal is 3-3 from 3!

RE: WBB: WSU preview and game thread; Th 7pm ACC Extra - crackpot - 11-07-2024

Ref comes over to the scorer's table and says, "Foul on 19. How do I do that?!"

You would think they would have figured this out before the season started....

RE: WBB: WSU preview and game thread; Th 7pm ACC Extra - martyup - 11-07-2024

At the half, it's 42-31.  We shot 48.4--75.0 (6-8) in the first half.  Heal is quick and aggressive.  She's not afraid to shoot and nails her shots.  She got a little wild under the basket a couple of times, but she's clearly an asset to this team.  Clardy had a great basket where she backed down her defender and muscled her way to the hoop.  She's tough.

I like the way we are spreading out our scoring.  We have 8 players that have scored.  Surprisingly, Harriel is the only player who been on the court and not scored.

Real sloppy 3rd Q so far.  Our assist ratio has dropped from our first game.  Heal is a bit too aggressive IMO.

Our defense has dropped off a bit from the first half.  Wazzu is shooting the ball pretty well.  They take good shots and don't try to force it when it's not there.

RE: WBB: WSU preview and game thread; Th 7pm ACC Extra - martyup - 11-07-2024

Wow!  We really finished the 3rd Q on a roll.  The score is now 69-48.  We are shooting 80% from 3!!!  (12-15).  But you don't rank us tho.

I like Clardy as the point guard as she gets up the court faster, and is willing to shoot or drive to the basket. She’s much more confident this year.

RE: WBB: WSU preview and game thread; Th 7pm ACC Extra - martyup - 11-07-2024

I think KP is doing a great job.  The team looks very good in the 4th Q.  Running the offense like a Swiss watch.  Pretty basketball.

Bosgana leads our scoring with 19 points.

Agreed. She’s much more confident and it helps that she is now accurate from deep. It seems as if Leopolo is being restricted in her minutes as she recovers from surgery and I’m happy with Clardy running the show.

Like everyone else, I wasn’t sure what to expect this season. Kate Paye has exceeded my expectations. By a lot. This team is playing like a team. I am impressed.

RE: WBB: WSU preview and game thread; Th 7pm ACC Extra - martyup - 11-07-2024

We win the game 94-65.  We shot 52.3--70.0 (14-20).  That's 32 made 3s in two games. We have scored 201 points in our first two games. That's not chopped liver.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - 81alum - 11-07-2024

Just wow.  70% three point shooting, in volume--14 of 20.  At one point we were at 80%.  I've never seen that.  Absolutely phenomenal shooting for the second game in a row.  Is this sustainable?

Washington State was not playing bad defense.  We had to work to get most of those three point shots off.

Players continue to show improvement.  Clardy deserves praise as others have noted.  Heal too.  It does seem as if she was not getting the benefit of fouls when she drove into contact under the basket--she is used to getting those calls as she was 4th in the nation last year in manufacturing fouls, but at this level of play it seems the refs are letting a lot more go.  That left her 4/4 from three point range and 1/4 on her drives.

Agara is proving to be a very capable and dependable scorer at several levels.

But tonight was in some ways Bosgana's night.  She led with 19 points, was 9/10 from the free throw line, meaning she was the player manufacturing her own scoring when all else failed.  Add to that 5 rebounds and 3 steals and you get an impressive all around stat line.  In short, her experience shows.

The players seemed to be playing with joy, and there were many fewer mistakes than I remember on last year's talented team. A total of 9 turnovers in the entire game--it just looked like clean play.

I submit that any night we shoot that well and keep turnovers low will be a very good night.  Let's hope we see many more.  We will have a major test with Gonzaga on Sunday.  I'll restrain my optimism until then, but so far, so (very) good.

Speaking of Bosgana and joy, Bosgana was very fired up and in a celebratory mood tonight, but she never seemed to know how to celebrate. I saw two chest bumps that were air balls of sorts and another attempted hug that was essentially deflected out of bounds. Elena needs a signature fist bump or something and she needs more practice to make it happen smoothly and without startling her teammates.

That said, I love watching her play and am delighted that her three ball is finally matching her driving ability, which only makes her that much more effective going to the rim. She continues to rebound extremely well for her position and is disruptive on defense. What I notice a lot more this year -- apart from being more unselfish -- is that her passing has definitely improved. Instead of being a black hole at times on offense, you can now run our offense through her.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - TheFarm07 - 11-07-2024

While the results have been very encouraging these first two games and much preferred to the alternative, I will temper my hope & expectations until we get into the meatier part of the schedule. Gonzaga will be another step up this Sunday and then we will have a big road test at Indiana the following Sunday but if we can go into Baton Rouge next month and replicate this against LSU, one of the Final Four teams from last year returning the majority of their team sans Angel Reese, then my confidence will take a big step forward.

I think we can beat Gonzaga at home. Winning at Indiana will be tough but possible. Winning in Baton Rouge? That's probably fairyland.

That said, I'm very happy with what I'm seeing. Love seeing the court spread and the scoring so distributed. Don't think we have the interior presence or the athleticism in general to be great, but I could see the ladies doing way better than 7th in the ACC. Go Card!

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - martyup - 11-07-2024

No doubt we are going to lose games this season.  We just don't have enough height and talent at the post position.  And we are not going to be able to sustain a 70% shooting percentage from 3 point range in every game.  BUT, we are going to shock some very good teams this season and it will be fun to watch.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - joemontes - 11-07-2024

Same here, tempered optimism, after two convincingly dominant wins versus non-Top 25 opponents.
But having 8 of 9 rotation players being three-point threats (except STEVENSON) is a major asset
for the Cardinal. And I really appreciate them winning every quarter in both games.

RE: WBB: Stanford 94 WSU 65 - BosCard - 11-07-2024

There were times in the 3rd and 4th quarter when the 5 out offense was beautiful to watch.   Reminded me of Utah’s offense where everyone can shoot the three or drive and the scoring is very balanced.  It’s harder to defend because everyone is a potential scorer.  Contrast that vs last year when our opponents knew that it would be Brink or Iriafen who would take the shot.   We definitely miss Brink’s defense but this year’s offense seems more like what we have been aiming to achieve with the Princeton.   And all that open space is great for players like Bosgana and Clardy who are probably the best driver/finishers on the team.

Don't forget Tess Heal.  She took 219 free throws last year, and it wasn't because they were fouling her at the three point line.

Teal driving to the hoop with the hope of drawing a foul would work as a strategy if we combined it with good boxing out to pick up the offensive rebound.  Last night she made a few rather wild drives to the hoop and didn't get a whistle or a bucket and Wazzu got the rebound.

I thought at times we made Wazzu's defense look better than it should by forcing shots down low when we were well covered.  With such good 3 point shooting, we should always kick it out when defended down low.
