Agara and Deme3 are hogging all of the baskets.

LSU's Moro got T'd up for taunting and Mulkey is going crazy.  She scolds the refs rather than her player. The entire game the LSU players have been jawing at the refs after calls go against them. Obviously they get that from Mulkey. I really despise her program.

After 3 quarters of basketball we have yet to trail the #5 team in the country.  No matter what happens in the 4th Q, we should get some more votes towards the rankings. We won the 3rd Q 18-15. We lead 57-52.

This is a great game for our team to prepare them for conference play.  They have proven to themselves that they can hang with the best teams in the nation, even on a hostile court.  I'm proud of our gals.

I agree completely with the above.  No matter the outcome, this is such a positive game for our young team.  And it would be stupendous if we can continue on to a win.

Wow!  So impressed with this team. Only remaining question is whether Mulkey gets an aneurysm.

After 3.5 quarters, we still haven't trailed LSU.

We have a 6 point lead with 2:52 to play.

I think we can confidently say that Paye > Mulkey.

5 point lead with :40 to play.

3 point lead with 30 seconds to play.

2 point lead with 16 seconds to play.

Harriel got mugged on that inbounds play. No call.

OVERTIME!! 80-80 after 40 minutes

The main source of home field advantage is the refs.  LSU has had at least 3 calls go their way.

One thing hasn’t changed from the Tara years: horrendous game management at the end of close games.

can we get Nneka as a walk on?  She's at the game.

It would have been fantastic to get a win tonight, but I'm so proud of how our team played in this tough road game.  This is a very good loss.  As good a loss as you can get.

Agara made her mark tonight.

Not sure why. This was an epic collapse. Is that where our program is now? Celebrating finishes like that? That would be sad.

Poor end of game execution. I didn't know that it was a lane violation to fake going into the lane during a FT.

They tied the game trailing by 5 with less than 20 seconds to go. They ended up hitting more and a better percentage from 3.

Very disappointing ending to what was a great game plan for 38+ minutes.

I was late to the game, literally. What happened to Tess Heal?

Realistically, we are not competing for a national title this year. A Sweet 16 run would be our ceiling, IMO, maybe an Elite 8 if we get a good matchup.

For me, this game shows that we have a good foundation even without elite-level talent. Adding Swain, Somfai and Eschmeyer will boost our capabilities next year and hopefully attract the top-5 talent we'll need to put ourselves back in the favorites category over the next few years.

Agree totally. Great effort by team. For three years we have watched this team fail to get the ball in bounds in key situations . Yes, there were fouls but there usually are. You simply have to have a stronger in bounds  play or better trained players. So very sad to see this coaching weakness continue .
Love this team, love these coaches but for goodness sake let’s learn how to get the darned ball in bounds under pressure at the end of games. arrgh!

RE: WBB: Stanford @ LSU, Thu Dec 5 6pm, preview and game thread - 81alum - 12-05-2024

As far as losses go, this was a much, much better loss than the debacle at Indiana.  Agara is indeed becoming a superstar.  Bosgana, Demetre, and Harriel turned out to be very productive too.  The coaching seemed excellent.  Kate very obviously had the team ready to start the game, and made adjustments that were helpful going into the second half.

LSU won the game by making many, many, two point jumpers.  They have shooters who seemingly can't miss from mid range.  That is the goal of every defense--stop the layups and the treys.  And LSU had the shooters who could beat us anyway.  They also made 40% of their treys, and in the end we made only 30%.  But the shots they were making were generally contested.  I think in the end, they just shot the ball better than we did.

The stat that our players should contemplate is that we led the game for 38 minutes.  We are very close to the No. 5 team.  If we can improve in a few small but significant ways, we can make the elite 8.

How to improve? Ball control.  LSU had 11 steals, we had 2.  That has been a category that has been a major improvement for us this year, but then again we have never played a team with the kinds of guards that LSU has.  In our first really serious test against a quality pressure defense, it turns out we have a ways to go.  Another stat that was caused by the same pressure defense--we had 12 assists and LSU had 21.  They knew how to disrupt our passes.  And every other team with a quality roster will watch this tape and do likewise.

In short, we need to improve how we run our offense against a quality pressure defense.

To add to that, our defense broke down.  Giving up 80 points in regulation is not good.  We were beaten in large part by Williams, who scored 32 and went 5/9 from three point range.  We were packing the paint and she made us pay from long range and everywhere in between.  Who is going to be our shut-down perimeter defender who we can sic on the hot shooter?

All that said, I would have given our odds of taking this game to overtime at less than 10%.  Despite the loss, I am now convinced that we are a better team than many believed.

Harriel was indeed mugged. A win would have been great, but we are much better than I thought we were. So, I'm looking forward to the season in a way I wasn't before. We can count on Agara now, and Demetre, Bosgana, Harriel and Clardy all did well, and better than I expected. I'd like to see Umeh get some time to give Agara a better break.
