RE: MBB : vs. Florida State, 4:00, ACCNetwork - needle - 01-26-2025

As of Sunday morning, Stanford No. 73 in KenPom.

Ranking in the top 75 and $6 gets you some Starbucks, sure. But it also means Stanford makes an appearance on one of the many "Bracketology" sites for obsessive types. If I'm reading this visualization correctly, Stanford is definitively not (yet?) on the bubble, fwiw.

RE: MBB : vs. Florida State, 4:00, ACCNetwork - skip75 - 01-26-2025

Next up, Syracuse comes to Stanford on Wednesday for an 8:00 game on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.

Per various rankings:
Stanford #70, Syracuse #146 per Net
Stanford #73, Syracuse #116 per KenPom
Stanford #68, Syracuse #108 per Massey
Stanford #67, Syracuse #143 per Bart Torvik
Stanford #84, Syracuse #95 per ESPN BPI

So, a game Stanford will likely be favored in by more than the 4.5 spread for the FSU game.

ESPN BPI projects Stanford's record to end up at 19-11 (11-9 in the ACC), which means going 5-6 in the remaining games.  They also have us rated lower than the others above.  I'm optimistic about the possibility of squeezing out 6 (or maybe 7?) more wins, getting to 20 wins and staying in that 5,6,7 range for a somewhat favorable seed in the ACC tournament.

But, first things first - Beat the Orangemen! Or is it just Orange now??

RE: MBB : vs. Florida State, 4:00, ACCNetwork - Leftcoast - 01-26-2025

The barrage of open threes against a tight nose-to-nose defense might seem strange until you noticed that Florida State double teamed Raynaud consistently and that help often came from the weak side wing defender.

Usually Florida State fronted Raynaud to deny him the ball.  When Stanford threatened the inside pass over the top FSU would flash the weak side wing to double-team and present Raynaud with temporary (and often aggressively played) backside help.  Last night Stanford did an EXCELLENT job of reversing the ball and finding that man temporarily left open.

This was my first game at Maples this year and I was impressed by a Stanford team that had a clear plan on offense and defense. Very encouraging!

Important games upcoming to try to get ourselves in the bubble conversation. Two games still vs SMU (they are projected as a first 4 out right now). Wake Forest at home (projected as next 4 out). Obviously a win at Louisville or at Duke could propel us into the discussion. One game at  a time!

KenPom relative rankings:
Duke             1
Louisville      25
SMU             50
Stanford        73
Wake Forest     74
Notre Dame      76
N. C. State    101
Georgia Tech   112
Syracuse       116
California     117
Boston College 211

That would seem to say that 7 wins are definitely possible. Wake Forest is a Stanford home game, which helps. Notre Dame and Georgia Tech are on the road, which does not. Asking us to beat SMU, even at Stanford, is a heavy task. IMO we are probably going to need all seven wins to make the NCAAs.

There is only one Orangeman. He’s POTUS. ;)

I think we are still fighting the weight of past negative performances. We just have to play them one at a time.  Beating Wake at Stanford is indeed possible as is splitting with SMU.  If we do that then people might start to pay some attention to us.

Agreed and I think we can win 7 games. Win our remaining home games, two not so easy in Wake and SMU and beat GT and and someone else. We have some pluses, a very good coach and players whom I now think are really starting to believe.

RE: MBB : Stanford 78 -- Florida State 71 - SkiBum80 - 01-27-2025

I think Coach is setting an example of how to get more from less, and more from more.
More from more, referring to Maxime. Such a big talent. But under Coach he is having a career year. I attribute that to Coach's influence and how he's used in team play.
More from less, referring to Coach coming in while inheriting a stampede of players fleeing the Farm. He brought in some key transfers and recruits and he is using them such that Blakes and Sellers are having their best seasons too.

One plus to this is that good players thinking about the portal and who have the rest of the package, are going to take a good look at Stanford. Reynaud has clearly improved quite a lot, and Blakes and Sellers are having career years, plus we have a lot of young talent coming up.  We will be a much more attractive destination than in the last few years.

I hope so. Raynaud is a senior, so this is his last year and it looks like we didn't get any Top 100 recruits in this year's class, so hopefully an elite Class of 2026 prospect (or two) will be coming to the Farm in a year and a half

The 4/5 from Latvia sure looks like could be top 100 and much better

Agreed, Bob, he sure looks like he has some skills.  Plus if you look at how Blakes and Sellers have turned out, it is clear that Smith can get a lot of his players talents.  Our freshman and redshirts and going to improve between now and next season.  I hope we have one space saved for a good transfer if one is out there.

Maxime is the ACC PotW.
