Yeah, soccer can be cruel that way.
Stanford outshot Louisville 16-4.
Shots on goal were 4-2, Stanford.
Stanford had 5 corner kicks to Louisville’s 1.
Louisville had 9 fouls and four yellow cards; Stanford had 6 fouls and 1 card.
By every measure except the one that counts, Stanford outplayed Louisville. One of Louisville’s shots made it through, while the Louisville keeper saved all 4 Stanford shots on goal.
Quote:"I was truly proud of how we played today, but also incredibly frustrated," said Jeremy Gunn, the Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer. "We started the game on the front foot and, in every category apart from the one that decides the result, we were the better team. We defended well, passed and moved the ball effectively, and created enough quality chances to score. Sometimes the players execute magnificently and you just get sucker punched."
It happens, but this is still a good team with a chance for a title. But it’s a reminder of why titles are elusive. If this had happened in, say, the elite 8, we’d be out.

Soccer can be so frustrating when "score early and turtle" becomes an effective offense

My ESPN replay only showed the last 62 minutes. But in that stretch Stanford wasn’t that much better and UL didn’t turtle until the last 15 minutes. This was a last year game - give up an early goal, fight like crazy to get back on the game, move the ball some, but only generate a few good chances and flail repeatedly on the final touch. In fairness a 11 am start time eastern is embarrassing for the ACC football or not.
This team though goes where the Frosh take them, because that plus Zach is where the sparkle is on offense. When the Frosh are meh like today, the team looks like last year - good but susceptible to a decent team and its own mistakes.

8 AM is a tough time for a class, much less an athletic event. Surely someone (perhaps some gambler group) is gathering stats about how performance changes at different times of the day. Yes, you can train yourself to be in top mental and physical state for 8AM, but then you probably aren't at that same level at 9PM (especially for an event that lasts hours)..
Does the ACC have rules about what time matches can be scheduled? Next year, can Stanford schedule Louisville for 9PM PDT ?

The early start was required to reduce conflict with the crowd arriving later in the day for the Louisville vs. James Madison football game. I blame Larry Scott.

There's rarely a truly dominant #1 team in Men's Soccer. In the last 15 years only three #1 overall seeds have actually won the title. And in none of the three seasons Stanford won the title (2015-2017) was it the #1 seed. So I'm not worried about the team being perfect. I just hope they stay somewhat near the top so they face less of a gauntlet in the early rounds.
Soccer can indeed be cruel. The 2019 Stanford Women's Soccer team (the one with Catarina Macario, Sophia Smith, Madison Haley, Maya Doms, Naomi Girma, Kiki Pickett, Belle Briede, Kennedy Wesley, etc. on the roster), won its first 5 games by outscoring its opponents 26-3. With their 6th game being against 1-3-1 Pepperdine they were surely feeling confident. But Pepperdine scored early (the 19th minute) and held on for the 1 nil victory. Of course that ended up being the team's only blemish on its national championship season. I'll take that result. :)

I hadn’t realized they only had one game on this trip. So. They travelled to Louisville for a single game on a Friday that conflicted with football, requiring an 11 am start time. What genius came up with that scheduling? And why not just move the game to Saturday? Not a good look for the ACC.

St Mary’s got a red card late in the first half with the score 1:1. It was basically over for them at that point, though they did hang around for longer then I expected.

Stanford scored twice in the final 11 minutes to pull out a tough 3-2 win at Syracuse tonight. Stanford's 1st regular season ACC win since Sept 27 of last year. Since the start of ACC play last year, Stanford has now won at Clemson, at Notre Dame, at Virginia and at Syracuse. Road warriors!

You can’t fault the effort, but man they are making it hard on themselves again this year.
Bad
- giving up early goals is the plague again this year. I think that’s 4 of the last 5 games.
- the first half is often rough sledding with too many high balls to nowhere in particular, and they aren’t great at winning those 50/50 balls. The result is only a 6:5 goal advantage in half one and an 10:2 advantage in half 2.
- too much loose change in or near the box - both goals for Syracuse came when Stanford couldn’t clean up a ball in the box.
Good
- the offense is clearly much better - last year an early opponent goal resulted in a loss or maybe a tie. This year they have won 3 and lost only one of those. Can’t keep doing this as the ACC unfolds though.
- I need to add Islam to the Frosh/game changer list even though he isn’t a Frosh. He is very interesting. He doesn’t pop out in the game; he isn’t big, fast or overwhelmingly tricky with the ball. He just seems to get to the right spots and finish - Chris Wondolowski like. Leads the team with 4 goals.
- can’t ever fault their effort. Came back twice in this one.
- it isn’t all clicking yet for Tomo - offside twice on goals in this game for example - but he looks close.

Stanford - San Jose St finishes 2:2 and Stanford was very, very lucky to get the tie. Both goals on CKs from Tenconi-Gradillas. One in minute 3 and one in minute 90. Between those 2 points Stanford had exactly 0 dangerous moments. Despite the shot and CK numbers, San Jose St was the better team in this one.

Saw the second half of tonight's game vs. SJSU. We did not look like a top 10 team IMO. Spartans controlled the ball most of the time, and deservedly were less than a minute away from getting the win.
Somehow, we found a way to tie the game from a corner kick. You got a sense of danger when they got close to our goal, and we lost the ball or got our shot blocked when we approached theirs.
Not impressed by tonight's game but we managed to tie what seems to me an underrated SJSU team.

We don’t have great stats in college games, but I would love to see time of possession in this one. My impression was Stanford actually had the ball more - it’s just they did nothing useful with it. San Jose St though was dangerous to your point when they did possess the ball. But rough impressions are sometimes wrong.
Alfonso has now scored 4 of the last 5 goals - all on corners - and is tied for the team lead with 4 goals overall while playing CB. He used to be a forward I suppose. It would hilarious though to see him hit double digits while playing CB. Right now he is about on pace to do it.

I managed to catch most of the second half vs Oregon State last night on the ESPN app. Quite a match, with lots of twists and turns, including a 10-minute review that disallowed a Stanford goal that would have given the good guys a 2-1 lead. Instead OSU scored about a minute later. In the end, it was a gritty 3-2 comeback victory for the Cardiac Cardinal:

I don't know enough about soccer to judge whether or not Stanford is a threat for a deep playoff run, but this team has a lot of moxie.

I think they are a threat, but the margins on the men’s side are tiny in the tournament. On the good side, the offense is clearly better though they can be somewhat reliant on dead balls. On the bad, the defense is worse this year. Overall I think it’s a higher ceiling / lower floor team vs. last year. But I don’t think the odds for any men’s team to win it all this year is higher then 10%ish.
Against OSU Stanford was the better first half team, but only had a 1:1 tie to show for it. Second half was much more back and forth, and choppy with the endless video reviews and “injuries.” Stanford really turned it on the last 20 minutes though, resulting in goals 2 and 3. Goal 3 was a mad scramble in the final minute for Allen.
On a side note, OSU is about the most theatrical team I have seen in college soccer. I thought I was watching Uruguay at times as somebody writhed on the ground near death. Combined with the video reviews, it turned into a 2:20 minute game which is ridiculous.
I guess that goal was called back for offsides per the match write up. Sorry, If it takes that long it wasn’t conclusive. Also, terrible on field communication by the referee, and the placement of the ball made it look like it was a foul on Banks. More generally, he couldn’t handle the second half intensity. Cards erratic. Fouls erratic. Fouls ended 15:7 and cards 3:0 against Stanford somehow, and we had announcers commenting that they thought the ref was mad at Stanford. All sadly normal on the west coast.

I think there should be a time cap for reviews in all sports, if you cannot find something to overturn the play in a couple of minutes they should let the call stand.

I agree. A referee cannot spend that much time reviewing clips and say that was conclusive. It appeared as the ref’s intention was to over turn the call so he just kept on with the review. He kept rewatching videos because he was not sure. Call stands and move on

I love soccer, but dislike all the theatrics and time-wasting tactics. I'm in favor of a 30 minute clock that stops when the ball is not in play.
Someone is injured, stop the clock. Corner kick, stop the clock until the ball is in play again. Same with throw ins and goal kicks. This will deter players from faking being near death after a minor trip or bump.
The 30 minutes is all we get in real ball in play time anyway so it balances out.
