The weekend that Stanford played OU in 1980, I was in Kauai with my then-husband. Sunday morning, I was curious as to what had happened the day before, and saw a couple of guys at the next table reading a Honolulu Advertiser. I asked if I could see the sport page, and when asked why I needed it, said I wanted to see how Stanford had done the day before. Lo and behold, one of these guys was a Stanford fan too and was all to happy to tell me that the good guys had won the game. When I read the article about the game in the paper, there was a quote from one of the OU players, saying plaintively, “Those guys aren’t supposed to win this game. They’re getting an education and everything!”

Interesting because I was in Hawaii too that day. When I heard the score, I thought maybe it was a mix up and it was Oklahoma that won the game decisively.

Great story, Nan3cy!

I'm too cheap to pay for the Honolulu Star Advertiser story, but I was able to find a free archive for the Oklahoma Daily (the OU student newspaper) and pull up the story about the 1980 game:

Quote:"Well they kinda whipped us good, didn't they?" OU linebacker coach Warren Harper, as he left the OU dressing room.

Years from now, when people who were at the OU-Stanford game Saturday look back and review it, they will forget about the rain and cool weather.
But they will remember John Elway.
