Hey, Brooke D. is wearing a T-shirt that is older than she is (I have one in my closet)!

I believe this is the first time that has happened at Stanford since before the 2009-10 season (if ever).  With so many scorers, we can have a player like Alex score 0 points and it barely registers a blip in the team's productivity.  It'll be interesting to see how this plays out this season.  For the moment, I'm much less scared of key players committing fouls than I have been in recent years.

That said, Lara Somfai is one of only 2 players in the country with two double-doubles against Division 1 opponents already. I might worry if Somfai fouled out.

Interesting! And well done, Somfai!

Also, a bit surprising re: the rest of the country? Is it a slow season for double-double machines? I feel like there are more of them usually.

(I don’t mean to diminish Somfai’s accomplishment in any way, I just am used to hearing about other teams’ star players lighting up the stat sheets early on in the season. Nice that the player making waves is on our team!)

A lot of teams have only played 1 or 2 games so far this season and there have been a lot of "cupcake" opening games for many teams. I suspect Somfai will have plenty of company once the fully D1 part of the OOC season is in full swing.

True but it’s not like Somfai has been playing a lot either.  She’s averaging 14 points and 10 rebounds in 22 mins per game.

Sorry, my point is that most top teams that would have posts who collect double doubles regularly have yet to play two D1 teams this season. In other words, I suspect there's a relatively small denominator of players who could even meet the criteria.

Edited to add: as an example, Raegan Beers has essentially averaged a double double over her past two seasons, but tonight is only her second collegiate game this season. I would be very surprised if Somfai doesn't have more company once more teams have played at least two D1 teams.

Sorry everyone.  There was a crucial typo in my post.  I meant to say Somfai is the only FRESHMAN with two double-doubles against D1 opponents so far. That's still the case after last night's games. There are only 18 frosh in the county with even 1 double-double so far and only 13 players of all class years with 2 (including those who have played non-div 1 opponents).

To me, the fact that it is so early is what makes it so impressive.  Consider some of our top players in points/rebound double-doubles since the 2009-10 season:

Chiney Ogwumike 85 career double-doubles (at the time the Pac 12 record)
1st double double - 6th game
2nd - 12th game

Cameron Brink 52 career double-doubles
1st Double-Double - 14th game
2nd - 18th game

Erica McCall 35
No double doubles her freshman season

Haley Jones 33
1st - 12th game
no other double-doubles her freshman season

Alanna Smith 23
no double-doubles her freshman season

Kiki Iriafen 18
no double-doubles her freshman season

Nunu Agara 9 (so far)
no double-doubles her freshman season

Nneka Ogwumike and others excluded because the Herhoopstats records I have access to don't go back far enough to cover their frosh season

And Somfai has yet to play more than 25 minutes in a game. The one game she didn't get a double-double was the first one, where she had 15 points and 8 rebounds in just 19 minutes. I doubt she'll be able to keep this up as we get into the tougher part of our schedule, but it's a great start to her Stanford career.

Great post, thanks for collecting and sharing all of this!

I'll add a few more:

Nneka Ogwumike 51
1st - 12th game
2nd - 19th game
6 double-doubles listed for her freshman year in her bio

Kayla Pederson 39
1st - 2nd game
2nd - 5th game
9 double-doubles her freshman season

Jayne Appel 46 (from WNBA.com)
1st - 23rd game
2nd - 25th game
5 double-doubles her freshman season

Nicole Powell 51
1st - 11th game
2nd - 12th game
10 double-doubles her freshman season, plus 1 10pt-10rb-10a triple-double

RE: WBB: Stanford 90 -- Cal Poly 55 - OCcardinal - 11-10-2025

Thanks @thewildjacko for the additional data. Looks like Kayla Pederson was immediately impactful too!

Also, Lara Somfai was just announced as the ACC Rookie of the Week! Somfai Named ACC Rookie of the Week

The article mentions that fellow freshman Blair Baugus (Middle Tennessee) also has 2 double-doubles.  I had gotten the names mixed up and thought she was one that had a game against a D2 squad. So there are indeed two freshmen with 2 double-doubles. Still impressive either way.

You're welcome, thanks for the inspiration! I edited to add Nicole Powell as well, as no conversation about Stanford double-double machines would be complete without her on the list. Congrats to Lara on the Rookie of the week award!

RE: WBB: Stanford 90 -- Cal Poly 55 - TheWildJacko - 11-10-2025

Some other interesting stats:

Despite being our leading scorer and rebounder, Lara Somfai is only 6th in min./game. Somfai also leads us in turnovers.

Despite Somfai and Agara being the leading and second-leading scorers, they also have the 2nd- and 3rd-worst FG%'s, respectively.

Somfai leads us in Usage Rate (making a shot, FT or turnover happen when she gets the ball).

By virtue of her 3-3 from the floor and from 3, Carly Amborn is our leader in points per play, points per scoring attempt, FG% and Effective Field Goal % (EFG%).

Talana Lepolo is 2nd in each of those 4 categories, but last in Usage Rate (aside from Papadaki)—likely due to her frequently choosing to set up other players to score rather than go for her own shot.

Lepolo leads in Assist % (% of plays that result in an assist) and in A/TO, and is also tied for 2nd-best 3 Pt. % with Alex Eschmeyer (but with 3x as many shots and attempts: 6/9 vs. 2/3)

MAS is tied with Carly Amborn for highest 3 Pt. %, having hit her only shot from deep. She's 3rd in EFG%. However, she's tied with Shay Ijiwoye for the worst turnover % on the team (% of plays that result in a turnover).

RE: WBB: Stanford 90 -- Cal Poly 55 - TheWildJacko - 11-10-2025

Also interesting:

Despite having the best OFF RTG on the team aside from Carly Amborn, Lepolo is 7th in PER (Player Efficiency Rating) and 6th in PER*MIN (total estimated value of PER in minutes played). This is likely due to her having the 2nd worst DEF RTG behind, surprisingly, Hailee Swain (not including Papadaki).

Nunu has the best PER (aside from Carly), and the best PER*MIN. The leaders in PER and PER*MIN are whom you'd expect: Agara, Clardy, Somfai, Eschmeyer, Lepolo, Swain and MAS (in varying order depending on whether you include minutes). Courtney Ogden is behind all of them in both categories, and Carly drops behind all of them in PER*MIN, as expected since she has the fewest minutes.

Let's hope Ogden continues to play as she did in her latest outing, and that Carly Amborn continues to get opportunities to shine and makes the most of them.

So far, Somfai is living up to her hype.  What I'm watching carefully is how she defends with her body and hands.  She didn't pick up any fouls against Cal Poly, but she had 2 against NC Greensboro and 3 against Santa Clara, which forced Kate to sit her for long stretches.  As the season progresses, Lara's ability to stay on the court will be one critical for the team to compete.

She only played 19 minutes against UNCG, but it wasn't because of foul trouble.  As you say, she only had 2 fouls. She didn't pick up her first foul until more than 14 minutes into the game. And while she was subbed out, it was only for the next 4 minutes.  When she picked up her second foul (20 seconds into period 3), she wasn't subbed out. Paye decided not to play Somfai at all in the last 14 minutes of the game. Not sure why (maybe just to get other players some time).  If Paye hadn't done that Somfai would easily have been 3-for-3 on double-doubles (just needed 2 more rebounds).

And an interesting (if unsurprising) stat about Carly Amborn.  She has a perfect 300 Offensive Rating. I don't know how much time she'll get this season in close games, but I can imagine her getting subbed in if the team ever needs a 3 (if as a decoy if nothing else).
