stanfan has hit it on the head. Also, we're not fast at receiver and can't really stretch the field. Somehow we lost an NFL-caliber receiver last year to graduation (Baldwin) and just never were able to keep Owusu free of dirty hits/concussive tackles. Our leading WR is a walk-on, but the leader in receptions/yards/TDs is actually a three-headed monster at tight end named FleenErTzoilolo.

Even thgough I wish Ty Montgomery had broken out just a tad more, I think he has done wonderfully as a freshman. I think if Luck is able to spread it around, Ty might be able to have a really big day.

It's certainly possible. We've seen flashes of Ty being able to do it all. He can go deep--doesn't look like a brobdingnagian strength, but certainly something he can do. His YAC ability will probably end up being his strongest suit--he's a big dude and evades a lot of tackles. And he can block very well for a freshman. I'm fairly bullish on his future.

So from what I can gather, Stanford is essentially Texas with a competent quarterback and better tight ends. Is that fair?

No, it's Texas with a sublime quarterback, equally good running backs, a better line, and better tight ends.Â
I would say Texas has a better secondary and better special teams. But I haven't looked at stats.
If OSU doesn't make the Stanford D look bad early, they are going to be in trouble.

Texas has a shade better WRs than Stanford. Chew on that for a second.
Stanford has a better OL than Texas, but I think Malcolm Brown at his full college potential will be at least equal to, if not better than, Stepfan Taylor. The Brown/Bergeron combo, when fully developed, will be a sight to behold. Stepfan Taylor right now is better than Brown, esp in the all-important blitz pickup department.
Texas has better DL than Stanford for sure. And let's be honest. Texas doesn't have a quarterback...yet. Stanford has the QB that Texas should have gone after (but oh, we're so grateful they banked on Gilbert instead).

Especially since we went after Gilbert too.
Of course, given JH's throw enough you-know-what against the wall that some is bound to stick recruiting style, there aren't too many QB's we didn't offer.
Gilbert, Barkley, RGIII, Landry Jones, E.J. Manuel are a few that immediately jump to mind.

Here are a collection of random thoughts on the game:
Oklahoma State's OL may be good, but there is no way it is any better than USC's. None.Â
Oklahoma State's receiving threats are good, but they aren't any better than USC's.Â
Oklahoma State's secondary may be good but there is no way it is more physical than Oregon's or USC's. I can buy Oklahoma State having the most physical corner Stanford has faced.
Stanford has the hardest hitting Safety Oklahoma State will have faced this year, in Delano Howell. He made first team All Pac-12 even though he missed 1/3 of the season.Â
Oklahoma State will be the first team that has to deal with Stanford fully healthy at TE since Oct. 22.
It's a very tight rope to walk when your defense has to rely on turnovers to win.Â
Stanford's secondary couldn't have a worse match-up than Oklahoma State's receivers, but Stanford's pass defense doesn't give up a lot of big scoring pass plays.
Stanford fared well against the other two pass oriented spread teams it faced in Arizona and Washington State this year.
Oklahoma State hasn't played a team like Stanford this year.Â
Predictions:
OSU is going to play a base defense and make Stanford do what Stanford likes to do, go on long, 10+ play drives to score TDs and plan on continuing to force turnover as they have all year.Â
Stanford will never rush more than four, but will do a ton of zone blitzing.
Vegas says Oklahoma State 39 Stanford 35. The score will be under that total.
Oklahoma State will only win if it rushes for at least 150 yards.Â
People will get tired of Matt Millen praising Andrew Luck during the broadcast.
There will be a brobdingnagian argument over where the winner of this game should be ranked, #2 or #3, in the final polls, in front of or behind the loser of LSU-Alabama, because the media needs controversy to feed interest.

I forgot that Marquise Goodwin and Mike Davis were both Texas receivers. Texas definitely has better receiving talent.

ESPN's Ted Miller and David Ubben have a
"Big 12 vs. Pac-12 Debate" posted today. It's not really a debate, though. It's more like a conversation that sheds a little light on the six teams that will be playing in bowls that involve the two conferences.
