I was under the impression that as a 21yo sophomore, he didn’t need to enter/withdraw—just wait and see when/where he gets drafted. I believe he has until the end of July to say yes/no to Softbank.
Thanks for the clarification JJJ.

Sources: MLB Proposes International Draft as part of CBA talks
If this actually becomes reality, it will potentially curtail Rintaro Sasaki’s initial payday, is how I understood it. Fwliw.

In addition, there is a proposal to stop drafting US athletes directly out of high school.

Oklahoma tied for 11th in the SEC regular season and lost to 14-seed LSU in the first round of the SEC tournament. The Sooners were one of 12 SEC teams (out of 16) to be selected for the NCAA tournament. They won the Georgia Tech regional--sorry jacket3ree--and beat Kansas--sorry to my eldest sister and her husband--in the superregional. In the College World Series, they steamrolled their way to the finals by beating national 7-seed Alabama once and 8-seed Georgia twice.
On May 18, the SEC announced their all-conference team. OU did not have any players on the 18-member first team or second team, no players on the 12-member freshman team, and one player on the 10-member all-defensive team.
OU does have 10 transfers from four-year institutions and a number of JC/CC transfers. But this national championship is about as unlikely as I could imagine.

I wonder how far away we were from making the tournament, and while I doubt we had the pitching to take us anywhere, OU’s story does remind you that once you are in, anything can happen.

Some MLB team is going to draft him. The marketing value alone will make it worth their while.

Good things to say about Sasaki.
Better than this yahoo who said
Rintaro was 5th-8th round talent.
If I’m Seattle, I’m taking him much higher for his post-Ichiro buzz, but I totally would welcome him back for one more year of seasoning on the Farm.

Japanese article
Rintaro had a 3hr meeting/meal with SoftBank’s GM Mikasa and former Major Leaguer Kenji Johjima (Chief Baseball Officer) in Fukuoka, as well as video messages from Chairman Sadaharu Oh, Owner Masayoshi Son, and Manager Hiroki Ohkubo. He was also offered the #1 (jersey number), toured the facilities, and had a presentation on how they planned to develop him. He said it was a very deep (meaningful) day for him. (*Not in the article, but Softbank has been known for never posting their players to the MLB earlier than their earned international free agency date.)

The MLB draft starts Saturday. I have no idea why it is sponsored by Nippon Express (like FedEx of Japan).
Maybe they’re hoping to benefit from some Sasaki hype. Players (except juco enrollees) have until July 27 to come to terms with the teams that draft them.
