Anyway, careful with that axe, Eugene.

I'd like to see some sort of mutually acceptable compromise, but the university does hold all the cards here, and along with the marginalization of the Dollies (by university-backed Stanford Cheer), it seems that the free spirit that used to infuse the Band and student population is no longer valued by the university.
I don't generally think of those terms as belonging together. Why use a flyswatter when a sledgehammer will do?

(1) I think the Stanford University Leadership may want to look at new models (than our current one) & what other Universities do for a band that performs at University Events (Sporting or otherwise).
(2) For example: What do NotreDame University & Duke University & GaTech University & Vanderbilt University do for their band ?
(3) If this question leads to a 'rethink' on our current stanford band model, and the formation of a more traditional Performing Marching Band, that might be a good thing.
(4) If there are individuals that may not want that, and cannot part with the way the previous tradition operated, I think they could just become a social club on campus and then within reason they could do as they wish, as a social-club, [e.g. scurry around like rats on a sinking ship when the lights came on, do snarky, sophomoric skits disrespecting other Universities, etc, ....outside the stadium & outside of Stanford Sporting Events].

Despite having had many years to outgrow their sophomoric antics, I'm afraid I still have much work to do. I still love the Tree and the LSJUMB. I hope they don't get replaced by the type of square high school marching band-style member that I would have been my first year on the Farm.

I'll add that no UC or Cal State campuses seem to use a hyphen in their name.
It's UC Davis, not UC-Davis. Cal State Fullerton, not Cal State-Fullerton.

Hi 82lsju,
Hope all is well,
I think what people are trying to convey here is to look at the substance of the post or opinion, not to fixate or nitpick (as martyup said) on the different ways a University can be named or referenced; I am going to hazard a guess that when I said 'GaTech University' that 90% of the people on this sports-board knew I was talking about Georgia Tech University, just like even though directly up above you write 'Notre Dam University' or earlier when you wrote 'Norte Dame University' (before you corrected it), we all knew what you were referring to.
Hope that helps clarify things a little.

I may be wrong, but I think the point was not referring to Georgia Institute of Technology as Georgia Tech GATech or Georgia Tech but for appending “University” to the end. There is no “University” in either “Georgia Institute of Technology” or “Georgia Tech”. Virginia Tech and Louisiana Tech both have “University” in their full names, but as pointed out, neither MIT nor Cal Tech do.

Proud that way back in October, 1985 my alma mater switched from "University of Santa Clara" to "Santa Clara University" so as not to be confused with the U of $poiled Children...
My sister-in-law is a proud Stanford alum (Product Design), Harvard alum (MBA) and GaTech alum (don't know her degree from GaTech)

Hi BC,

(2) I think I see your point. Maybe I confused 82lsju (which was not my intent, & which I tried to clarify ...sorry 82lsju for any confusion).
I wrote out a list of 4 universities and just for 'prosaic consistency & symmetry within the list' appended the term 'University' to all 4 of them;
I assumed 90% of sports fans on this board would know which universities were being referred to, & did not think that would cause such a stir.

I was not confused, just like to see the Universities referred to correctly and neither appending "University" to the end when it is not part of their name nor switching the placement of the word University from the beginning to the end of the name. I would imagine some Stanford fans would not like their school referred to as University of Stanford instead of Stanford University even though I'm sure 90% of sports fans on this board would know who you were referring to.
