Re: WBB: Stanford 67 Oregon State 60 - 81alum - 01-07-2012

Really thoughtful analysis as per usual, VG.

With regard to the three point shooting, I wonder if it was that our shooters had lost confidence after Tara's Oregon remarks, or whether there were concrete instructions given to minimize shooting the 3.  I saw even Bonnie pull one down that she might have taken.  We went from 42 three point attempts to 8.  I also think that missed 3 point attempts are often a decent way to get Nneka and Chiney offensive rebounds and put backs--perhaps better than those lobs.

What did you think of Toni's defense on Ali Gibson in the second half?  The Oregon papers are featuring Gibson's breakout performance in the first half.  Tara mentioned and the Chronicle highlighted that Toni was assigned to guard her in the second half and played "suffocating defense."  Gibson's production dropped from 13 to 3.  Is Toni our best quick defender?

Re: WBB: Stanford 67 Oregon State 60 - Viking_Guy - 01-07-2012

One other thing-- the strangeness of this game continued all the way through the end.

After Jos' good offense against their zone late pushed the lead to 14 with about 3 minutes left: again, a dribble drive generated an easy shot for an open post after Stanford's post rotated to help.  Nneka missed a shot and Jos rebounded, but instead of kicking it out and using another shot clock, she put up a contested attempt and another quick jumper by the Beavers cut the lead to 10 with a little more than 2 minutes left.

Then came one kind of weirdness.  OSU stayed in their 2-3 zone, not pressuring the ball at all, and not fouling, letting Stanford run 25 seconds off the clock.  Lindy missed a shot, but Nneka rebounded and was fouled (again, she didn't kick out to run more clock).  Made both FTs, but then another quick drive led to an and-1 after Jos fouled.  Again, the Beavers didn't foul or press, and Nneka took a quick shot and hit it (again not running clock).  Indendi hit a 3 for OSU to cut it to 8 - and again, no fouling, no pressure, and this time Nneka again took a quick shot and missed but the ball went out off OSU.  Stanford inbounded, and ran 15 more seconds, but then Toni gave it up on the perimeter and fouled in transition.  Another FT, and a miss and o-board, but then a scrum that ran the rest of the clock out.

It was just strange; it was as if OSU, having played themselves into contention, was content with the moral victory, and Stanford, instead of simply taking the air out of the ball and running the clock out, shot early in the clock and didn't conserve each possession.

Just a strange, weird, unsatisfying game.

Sorry, was posting before I saw your reply.

Yes, Toni is our best quick perimeter defender (although I'd really like to see a 3-2 zone with Jos/Boothe and Nneka on the backline and Chiney at the point).  Amber gives up a bit too much height, but she could get better.  Lindy is a good positional and physical defender, but doesn't have the lateral quickness to stay in front of quick drivers without help.  I was really hoping one of our incoming class (Alex or Jasmine) would take to that role, and develop into a "glove" defender.  And seeing Erica playing up top on some offensive sets with the subs, I'd like to see what she could do on perimeter defense as a stopper.

Quote:It got so bad that a friend of mine got upset with me when I started yelling what Stanford would do when they were walking the ball up in the second half and Toni and Lindy just started tossing it back and forth between them; I was that frustrated.

The AP story on the game said "One male fan in the Stanford section yelled, 'What team is this?' during a timeout with 15:59 left and the game tied at 37."

VG, was that you?

Re: WBB: Stanford 67 Oregon State 60 - Yellowlab - 01-08-2012

I was very interested to see how Jos would play against a team with players taller than she is.  She's demonstrated that she can be effective against smaller teams, but I was still wondering how she would do against bigger opponents.  I'd have to say she was pretty scrappy yesterday.  I liked what I saw.

VG has already mentioned what I thought was the key insight into an otherwise forgettable game.  Playing Jos at the high post made the Stanford offense look better than it has all year.  (I completely agree with the comments about the unimaginative triangle against the zone.)  Tara has been subbing Jos in for one of the sisters most of the year.  Having her on the floor with them was highly effective, at least in this game.

I'm feeling the loss of Jasmine Camp a little bit more with every game.  Orrange has got to step it up.  I think she'll get there on the offensive end, but I just don't know whether she can do it defensively this year. It makes me marvel all the more at how good Kayla was defensively in her first year.  Tara had her guarding Candice Parker!
