Looks like a case of overestimation: https://twitter.com/#!/schadjoe/status/158425579203465216

Compares himself to Cam Newton.

Bennett has a better arm than Thomas and he's more athletic. He's the real deal and just as much of an NFL prospect as Nottingham. Oregon could be even better with him at QB next season.

Re: Darron Thomas going pro - socalstanfan1 - 01-15-2012

Personally, I'm not expecting any drop off for Oregon next year.  Many of us (including me) thought there would be some drop off when Masoli left the team, and we see how that worked out.  And last year, when Thomas missed about a game and a half I remember thinking this was the chance for an upset that might give us the inside track on the Pac-12 North, but Bennett was pretty damned impressive.  I'm sure defensive coordinators will have a chance to prep for him as the season goes on and they get more film, but I think Oregon is just a unique system that will always be a difficult team to beat as long as they have excellent athletes.  I have heard that Thomas was, as of this season, a more accurate passer, but that Bennett was a better runner.  Ultimately, we just need to get more athletic on the defensive side of the ball (moving in the right direction here with Lyons, Noor Davis, and Alex Carter coming in, assuming the latter two remain solid through signing day), and hope that at some point Chip Kelly decides to take his system to the NFL to give it a spin with the big boys.  Who knows, maybe Denver will bring him in to build a system around Tebow, or Miami will just get desperate for something to inject life into the franchise and throw a bunch of money at him.  (The first idea is in total jest, btw.  The second idea I think could be a bit intriguing, since Miami swung-and-missed with Jeff Fisher, though I doubt if that would happen, either.)

I agree - JohnR34231 - 01-15-2012

I don't think Oregon will drop off much either.

When we beat them, it's going to be because we've recruited the athletes and figured out the schemes to stop their offense.

Also, when the game is on the line, their defense always seems to find a way to stop our offense. Obviously, we need an answer for that too.

Hopefully all that will come sooner rather than later.

As desperate as the NFL seems to be for head coaching talent, I'm a little surprised that someone hasn't decided to take a chance on Kelly and made him an offer he can't refuse. If he continues to do as well as he has been doing, I'm thinking it's just a matter of time.

Defensively, scheme-wise, I think we're close. What the defensive line was able to do to them in the first quarter and a half is exactly what you need to do to slow down Oregon; it's just a matter of putting together the kind of talent profile necessary to inflict that kind of damage--and it's clear the coaches agree: they signed four defensive linemen last year and apparently want four this year too.

Offensively it's harder to tell. I wish we could've played Oregon again with our offense from the OK State game, which was dramatically better. Those injuries really hurt us, and the difference in offensive line play from the Oregon game to the South Bend/OK State game make me think there were some unreported injuries we didn't know about there.

Re: Darron Thomas going pro - bulldogbigred - 01-15-2012

Bennett is just as good or even better than Thomas. I don't think one player will change their pecking order in the Pac-12. The Ducks still have Barner and De'Anthony Thomas.

Oregon isn't the only team in the Pac 12 North whose starting QB is going pro.  I think Nottingham will be great -- significantly better than Bennett -- but the dropoff from Luck to Nottingham is still bigger than the dropoff from Thomas to Bennett.

I agree, or disagree, hell, whatever - Redrum - 01-15-2012

I'm constantly amused by the leitmotif in Stanford conversations about Pac8-Pac 10-Pac 12 football.  Like the Israelites waiting to cross over to the promised land,  we constantly talk about the imminent decline of opponents as the key to our success.  If Chip Kelly goes,  if Matt Barkley goes pro,  if USC is put on probation, if Sarkesian gets hired by the pros, if Kal would just renew Tom Holmoe's contract.....Stanford could then just win it all.  Happened once when USC turned the reins over to Paul Hackett  but generally the challenge is for us to be good enough to beat them,  not that they get lousy enough that we can beat them.

Just remember,  Tennessee won the national title the year after Peyton Manning graduated.
