The term "hostage" was probably not appropriately applied here. I am definitely of the mind that any player who has the leverage to negotiate there way out of an ugly program should use it. Whether it's Josh Childress signing with an Italian team to get away from the Hawks' monopoly, Elway using baseball to move to Denver, or Eli Manning essentially saying "f-you, I'll sit out a year and live at home" to the Chargers to get moved to the Giants, I have no problem with individuals raising their BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement.)
While the NFL draft is fun to watch, rookie free agency would be very interesting to watch. As long as there is an overall salary cap in place to maintain competitiveness across an entire league, I like the idea of allowing the market to determine salaries and allowing the players the freedom to go where they want.

This is more-or-less what's happening in socialist Europe.

MLB is a farce, based on the disparity of salary spending by teams like the Royals and A's compared to the Red Sox and Yankees. The salary cap is was drives the even playing field in the NFL though, more than the draft process. If the NFL allowed rookie free agency, within a salary cap environment, teams would still have to be rationale about who they sign and for how much. It might even make teams more critical about their rookie signings and thinking about the cost/benefit tradeoff when signing a player with great "up side."
