I am in this boat as well, and Shaw is no dummy.  This is high in his considerations.

I have confidence in Dudchock's receiving abilities. Brandon Gottfried is 6'5 and a redshirt sophomore. We can't forget about Matt Kasner either who Fleener had very nice comments about.

We have an abundance of athletic QB's that we may not use. Maybe somebody like Hogan who is about 215lbs and 6'4 can catch. Or a bigger WR who can beef up to TE like 6'4, 214lb freshman Devon Cajuste. Plus we have defensive ends who have tight end size. Nate Lohn seems fast and athletic, 6'3 265lbs.

I think we have some options if we have to switch a reserve type player into a tight end, I think we could make it happen.

I think relying on a TE conversion or walk-on is the definition of courting danger--particularly when there's what, maybe one wideout we think we can count on in 2013? And while both Ertz and Toilolo probably won't go pro, it's not exactly out of the realm of the possible. Which is why, if you're David Shaw, recruiting at least one and preferably two TEs is a necessity.

I'm no expert, but aren't we incredibly early in the recruiting process. I mean I don't even think scout.com has ranked the prospects yet. I would bank on at least one or two TE commits somewhere down the line, even if it's a signing day commit. Heck, we'll probably find some two or three star guy then magically the dude will end up a four star.

This time last year, we had two commits, one of whom later decommitted. Everybody calm down.

Did he watch Ash play last year? If he did and still thinks it's a draw, we didn't lose anything because he wouldn't have ever been admitted anyway. ;)

Damn. I spoke too soon. At least he's not announcing tomorrow and will take some time to think it over.

YM -- I agree with you about our options for '12, but we need to land 1 or 2 TEs this class.  with have 4 known TE offers out today, 3 are committed elsewhere.  of course, there is always a chance for a Michael Rector late conversion, but tough to count on.

I'm sure we are set for TEs next season, obviously.  But I would agree with WIM that, while the coaching staff may be able to convert someone to TE from another position, or find a walk on who turns into lightning in a bottle, that is a pretty dangerous path.  The odds of developing top flight TEs is much better if you get top TE prospects coming out of HS.  My earlier post wasn't just based on Smythe and Brenneman going elsewhere, but the fact that we did not manage to get a single TE prospect last year, despite such a TE-friendly offense.

I think any TE, ideally, will redshirt their freshman year to learn the offense and bulk up for the rigors of big time college football blocking.  So, with that thought in mind, we really need to get some more depth at the TE position this recruiting cycle (ideally would have done so last year, IMO), so they can have a year to develop while the earlier class migrates to the NFL.

Regarding Hawkins, WIM, my impression of the events was different: I think he called the press conference to announce signing with Stanford, got a last second offer from USC, and now is taking some time to consider the two offers.  I'm sure the USC coaches were in his ear about, "what if you don't get admitted; we only have a few spots, lock one up now," etc, etc.  My sense, purely from reading the same stuff you probably are, is that we are still in pretty good position for him, though he is obviously giving the USC offer strong consideration.  IMO, might as well face that USC offer right away.  If he really wants us, he'll eventually commit in any case.
