Here's a free article from Drukarev on Ryan Burns, examining (and rebutting) some of the criticisms.

Here's an interesting development. Sean Barton (6'3"/220/4.48), a four-star safety from Utah with a moderately impressive offer list (ASU, Boise State, C.al, UCLA, Utah, Washington) has put Stanford in his final three along with Washington and Utah. Decision due by the end of summer.
Since nobody is on Rivals... Sean Barton -

Just watched the Sean Barton highlight video last night after reading a Rivals story on him. Since nobody is on Rivals...
The kid looks like a real difference maker. Says he's down to UW, Utah, and Stanford. He's now listed at 6-3 220, runs a 4.6 (looks faster on video) and projects as a FS, has a 3.6 GPA and lots of honors courses. Anyone have thoughts on his recruitment?

I don't think it's so much that people aren't on Rivals we had a whole thread talking about Drukarev and what a good job he does covering recruiting. It's that people don't link to information that's behind a pay wall.

I think he's actually under consideration as a LB for us. Part of the lack of discussion I think stems from the fact that he'll be taking a mission directly out of high school--it's a lot harder to get super excited about a guy you won't get to see for two years (at best; obviously he might not come at all).
He'll be a very solid pickup for whomever; I believe he's visited us the most, so I'd guess we're the favorite here. Would give us our sixth Rivals four-star should he commit. For contrast, here's how many 4 and 5 stars (Rivals) we've gotten in previous years of the Harbaugh/Shaw era:
2007: 1
2008: 2
2009: 8
2010: 5
2011: 7
2012: 13
Pretty remarkable that with (hypothetically) seven commits we'd be already matching the 2009-11 trend.

TE Hunter Henry will announce his decision on Thursday. He visited Stanford this spring but I have a feeling that Arkansas might be in the lead. Seniors just received their AP exam scores earlier this week, could it have something with the timing?

I actually wondered the same thing, not so much about AP scores (which could obviously be important), but I think he also took the ACT a while back. I wondered, if he scores well so he may not have to retake the test and go through that uncertainty, might that lead him toward Stanford? or, conversely, if he doesn't do as well on the APs and ACT...
Again, way to much time trying to get in the mind of a 17 year old

Hunter Henry to Arkansas.

Vernon Hargreaves and Jordan Sherit to Florida. Vernon was not much of a surprise, but Jordan had the test scores and seemed pretty interested in Stanford so that one is a bummer.

I, too, am pretty bummed about Sherit. But I don't expect the coaches will stop recruiting him, and if he comes out to campus maybe they can change his mind. Possible that he was caught up in the moment with his good friend Hargreaves and, a bit removed from the excitement will think carefully about the "40 year decision."Â
It's still a long way to signing day.
good news coming? -
socalstanfan1 - 08-04-2012
Stanford Football retweeted a post from Sean Barton, 4* safety/LB (depending upon the recruiting service you look at):
"I got stuff to tell y'all after tomorrow"
Why would Stanford retweet that unless the stuff was positive, and Stanford related?
Re: Class of 2013 -
washingtonismoney - 08-04-2012
They feel like committing a recruiting violation? (It's deleted now.)
But, yeah, the feeling has been for a while that Barton's favoring Stanford. Very good pickup, even if he'll be Mormon missioning.
Re: Class of 2013 -
socalstanfan1 - 08-04-2012
I guess one can never be too careful about the arcane rules of the NCAA. But with the number of coaches who tweet "Great call for (fill in the blank) football today", would retweeting a comment made by a player himself (or herself, depending on the sport), really bring down the wrath of the rules committee? Maybe
Re: Class of 2013 -
washingtonismoney - 08-04-2012
No, there's no doubt an official account retweeting or messaging a recruit is a violation. It's just a secondary violation, so probably a wristslap and a punishment like, "No more champagne cruises in the canals of Mars" or something.
Barton to Stanford -
socalstanfan1 - 08-05-2012
As surmised from earlier tweets, Sean Barton has verballed to Stanford. 3*/4* Safety/LB, due to go on mission for two years, so perhaps some delayed gratiication on this one. But I assume he may not count against our (very limited) number of scholarships we have to offer, if indeed he does go on his mission. Does that sound right? That would be a considerable silver lining.
Re: Class of 2013 -
washingtonismoney - 08-05-2012
Yeah, that's exactly right--he doesn't count. That said, it's strange to call it a silver lining. Barton's a good player--offers from Boise State, Utah, Vanderbilt, various Pac-12 programs. I'd be perfectly happy if he came in with the rest of his recruiting class.
Barton's a 4 star to ESPN and Rivals, a high-three star for 247, and Scout is a pretty far-off outlier as a medium three-star. (Oddly, Scout's been an outlier on a lot of Stanford recruits--on the low side. The idea that Ryan Burns is the #38 QB and Doug Randolph is the #31 OLB is goofy at best.)
Barton's our sixth four-star recruit in this class according to Rivals. That ties us for 13th nationally. Our average star rating is 3.71, fourth in the country. Our five Rivals 250 players places us second in the Pac-12 and third among regular opponents (i.e. plus ND).
Major targets left are Devon Allen, Jordan Cunningham, Johnny Johnson and Will Likely. Possible there's a stealth recruit in there as well.
Obligatory highlights:

How about "added bonus" -
socalstanfan1 - 08-05-2012
...rather than "silver lining."Â You're absolutely right, WIM, there's no "dark cloud" to getting a 4-star LB/DB.

I went to check it out. There are two Stanford Football twitter accounts, the one that RT-ed Sean Barton is an unofficial account.Â

Andy Drukarev's one-man journalism hustle is so good. Anyway, he caught up with one of Sean Barton's coaches, who talked about him:

32 ACT? I think...that's an admissible score, right? They're still letting those guys in?
