SF Chronicle stories.
This notebook article, primarily about Ty Montgomery, may have the worst lede I have ever seen on a story. Just terrible.

And then here's Jordan Williamson:

Yup, made me throw up in my mouth a little.

I thought Matt Morrison was off his rocker in the roundtable when he said "Tarpley and Lancaster may not even start," as he assumed the higher rated recruits Skov and Vaughters would likely be first team. It's reasonable to suggest Lancaster won't start and Skov would, but anyone with eyes who watched Stanford play in 2011 knows A.J. Tarpley is a great Linebacker in the making. He played as a RS Frosh and was fantastic. He's only going to get better.
It is no surprise to hear the coach say Tarpley is at the top of the heap at ILB. The battle is going to be between Skov, Vaughters and Lancaster for the 2nd starting ILB spot, but they are all going to play a lot.

I don't think Tarpley is the lock to start at MLB. From what I've heard Skov is back to 100% so he would be the lock. And Tarpley could start over Vaughters but I wouldn't call that a lock either.

From Stanford Football's twitter account:
"We will have an open practice this Saturday 9-11am at the Elliott Practice Fields. Fans of all ages are welcome. #gostanford"
Who is going? I wish I lived in the Bay Area.

Agreed. Skov will start. The other spot is up for grabs.

Gemmell on the receivers:

ESPN's top 25 preview:

ESPN the Magazine's (Insider) preview:

The latter is interesting. They project us to have 9.8 wins. However, their "swing games" have some interesting projections:
Quote:Swing games
Stanford's chances of winning in three critical matchups this season, based on PFEI.
Sept. 15 vs. USC
50.8 percent -- Stanford's weak pass D (253.2 ypg) will have to step up.
Oct. 13 at Notre Dame
55.7 percent -- The Cardinal held ND RB Cierre Wood to just 41 yards in '11.
Nov. 17 at Oregon
39.5 percent -- Pac-12's top two scoring offenses square off (89.2 ppg combined).

Ah, a pun hater. Here's another from today's beach volleyball story in the Merc:

The mothership is showing the Cardinal some love. When Stanford didn't show up in the 16-25 range of the ESPN Power Ranking, I thought for sure they'd been left off the list altogether. But low and behold, 11-15 was "revealed" today and ESPN puts the Cardinal at 13.

It's not so much the pun as the execution. Though I'll admit I'm a difficult guy to please on the pun front. In the volleyball case, the sentence makes sense both on the literal level (if May-Treanor wasn't named Misty, she could still be msity) and the punny level. On the other hand, the Montgomery sentence makes no sense aside from a vehicle to convey a pun, which is what makes it awful.

Exactly right. The "Ty game" phrase is simply lazy writing, but it's even worse than that. It's like he doesn't even care.

I think most people don't care.Â
But that is one reason to drop by this board. It hosts the four or five people who do care enough to offer more than a groan.Â
Thankfully it is often more interesting than it is fussy.

In terms of volleyball, I am easy to please on the bun front.

Wilner's first AP poll out:
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2012/08/08/my-associated-press-top-25-football-ballot-preseason-rankings-lsu-is-no-1/
As usual, there's more than a bit of goofiness with a Wilner poll. I don't necessarily have a problem with his ranking Stanford #23--it seems as reasonable a guess as any, really--but it is a bit odd to see Wisconsin at #16, seven spots ahead of Stanford. I'm not sure how you can objectively compare the returning personnel of both teams and conclude Wisconsin's
much better, especially when you consider the coaching exodus from the school and the oddity of the Montee Ball situation.
Re: 2012 pre-season thread -
FarmBoy - 08-09-2012
WIM - my interpretation of the Wilner pre-season poll is that it reflects where he thinks the teams will end up at the end of the season, not necessarily the quality of the teams. Perhaps Wilner believes Stanford's schedule is more difficult with USC, @ Oregon, @ ND, @ UW, and @ Cal compared to Wiscon's @Oreg St, @ Nebraska, MSU and tOSU. If so, I'd say that the schedule gives Wisconsin the edge to end higher ranked.

Well, since he spent most of last season playing the "Stanford hasn't played anyone card," he might as well try something new.

SI's released their college football preview and have a couple of Stanford items.
Here's Stewart Mandel's profile of Chase Thomas. Some nice color:

And they have the shortest of short interviews with Shaw, although this being SI, they've laid it out over two pages for no good reason:

Some tweets from beat reporters Antonio Gonzalez and Kyle Bonagura. The upshot:
Andrus Peat: freakish. Apparently Kyle Murphy and Andrus Peat are "close to being able to play."
Expect starting QB week before SJSU.
Ty Montgomery is apparently "twice the player he was at the end of the season."

Wilner reports many of the same tidbits but adds a valuable one: Kodi Whitfield and Michael Rector are competing for playing time at wideout.

I would guess Whitfield of the two.
