Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 01-29-2013

Let's bump this both because it's more relevant now, and to get our mind off the bummer finish to '13. Here's the state of play as far as I can see in regards to offers (culled from Rivals and 247. We'll use a naive approach and simply list whomever says they've got an offer, though of course that may not be true):

QB (1):
Keller Chryst (Five star on 247; Four-star on Scout, Rivals; watchlist on ESPN)

RB (9)
Christian McCaffrey (Four star on Rivals, 247; four-star on Scout; four-star on ESPN): Committed to Stanford

Corey Holmes (Four star on 247, Rivals, Scout; watchlist on ESPN)
Trevion Thompson (Four stars all around)

Stanton Truitt (three star on 247, Scout; unrated by everyone else)
Matt Nelson (unrated)

Commits:
Brandon Fanaika (back from mission)
Brandon Simmons
Christian McCaffrey
Daniel Marx

Open Spots (speculative; math may be wrong and/or may not know full scholarship details of roster)
3 banked scholarships from 2013.
14 expiring eligibility next year
7 possibilities for uninvited 5th year (Nelson, Bonnell, Seale, Dudchock, Hemschoot, Underwood, Plantaric -- though of course this is premature and is using broad criteria. Essentially, if you aren't a returning starter you're on this list.)
4 possibilities for leaving early (Yankey, Reynolds, H. Anderson, Richards)

On high end, then, you've got 28 potential open scholarships just as a guess based on known information (obviously transfers, medical retirements, other stuff may come into play). It seems reasonable to assume not all of these will materialize, then. Maybe 23 or 24 incoming players, to approximate.

Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 02-07-2013

Here's how the conference + ND stack up in terms of reported offers handed out for 2014:

N.D. (79)
UCLA (63)
ASU (44)
Utah (43)
Literature's Greatest Losers (43)
UW (43)
Arizona (37)
Colorado (34)
Stanford (31) (note that the offer total for 2013 was 65)
Oregon State (26)
59ers (23)
WSU (18)
Oregon (18)

Re: Class of 2014 - yvonne - 02-07-2013

I need a little perspective, WiM. When are most offers handed out? How might this compare with the 2013 offer list at this time of year?

As to question 1) you see a lot of offers right now to perceived top-tier targets, followed by another flood after junior days, followed by some more after camps...and that should take care of the vast majority of the class, with maybe some mop-up offers in the fall.

2) We've picked up the pace of offers considerably. We were very picky about handing out offers for 2013 because of the lack of space; I'd speculate we also figured we'd be a hot property. Unfortunately, we ran head-on into a trend wherein players commit much more quickly than they used to -- so we were laggards doubly so. Not filling the pipeline in the beginning contributed to the poor class at the end; that was the problem more than the "close" of the class.

So being around average-ish right now is probably right. Looking at the offer list you can see a clear bias towards defensive backs in the 2014 class -- by far the main need. Second on the list is defensive line. Then, basically, the coaches should emphasize going after quality (though they need to bring in their minimum of OL.)

EDIT: forgot running backs. Clear priorities are DB, DL, OL, RB. You still want to stock the pipeline at other positions (with quality), but the class is in trouble if the numbers aren't there for those four positions. We look like we're in good shape for DB and DL. RB you have McCaffrey and a power back, so decent shape. OL is a bit more mysterious at the moment.

Re: Class of 2014 - stan01 - 02-08-2013

New Stanford offers:

DB Alameen Murphy from Fort Wash., Md.
OL/DL Quenton Nelson from Red Bank, NJ
DB/WR Montae Nicholson from Monroeville, PA

Re: Class of 2014 - yvonne - 02-10-2013

Word elsewhere is that he committed under Tarver, and that changes in the defense make him no longer "fit," whatever that means.

My guess is Stanford dropped Williams.  That likely means there are better prospects in the pool at his position.

The tweets I've seen seem to indicate it was mutual agreement to go different ways. Did he want to play a different position from what we wanted him as?

Re: Class of 2014 - StannyBoy - 02-11-2013

The reality is Williams isn't Pac 12 material. He had a great sophomore year and then his junior year he didn't even get all league honors. Not even honorable mention. Numerous players on his team stood out more than he did. The writing was on the wall. Also, I don't think he has grown much so not big enough for LB and not athletic enough for safety.

Wasn't he injured half the season?

But it has indeed looked like he's maxed out at abut 5'9, which is even pretty tiny for a strong safety.

Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 02-11-2013

He ran a 5.0 40 at the Under Armour combine. I'm not someone who's a brobdingnagian believer in that metric, but that's a major red flag -- for a linebacker, let alone a safety.

Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 02-11-2013

Here's the WaPo article on Murphy's offer. Not exactly swimming with detail (Murphy intends to visit for a camp), and the coach's comment on the offer is:

Quote:“We know a lot of schools are interested,” Friendly offensive coordinator Darrell Dreher said. “With that big offer, we expect a lot of schools to come in even more targeting Alameen. Now we’re just going to have to wait and see what happens.”

Feelllll the enthusiasm. Might be a selective quote, but the guy seems most interested in leveraging our offer.

Re: Class of 2014 - washingtonismoney - 02-12-2013

A minor bummer as Utah nose tackle Bryan Mone commits to Michigan. Given the importance of nose tackle in 3-4 (and our not taking one in 2013), it would've been nice to land a highly-rated one this class. Sadly, it's probably not to be with Mone (although you can always hope for that de-commit, I suppose).

Plenty of time to recover, though.

Terrible to see Michigan land a recruit from Utah, Pac-12 / Mountain West territory.

Are any of the four defensive linemen from the 2012 class potentially a nose tackle?

Re: Class of 2014 - StannyBoy - 02-12-2013

Ikenna Nwafor was listed at 308 lbs this past season so I would guess he'll end up at NT.

Bump .... For Zaru's benefit.

Keller Chryst at open practice today: https://twitter.com/DavidMLombardi/status/307928705169244160

Re: Class of 2014 - StannyBoy - 03-02-2013

I was there. Chryst is brobdingnagian, at least 6 foot 4 now. Bentley Spain was also there. He's brobdingnagian too. There was a 3rd recruit who was with Spain most of the time watching the OL practice but I am not sure who it was. The kid was tall and pretty big so probably an OL recruit.
