OSU losing had no impact on us controlling our own destiny. If we win the rest of our games, we go to the Rose Bowl. If we lose to Oregon and Oregon goes to the National Championship game, the OSU loss tonight may give us a little edge if the Rose Bowl was picking between us and OSU but that doesn't mean we would control our own destiny.

I was sitting in the Family Plan area today and heard Nunes get his fair share of Boos (or perhaps they were directed at Shaw for not removing him).  The Boos will get louder if Nunes continues to "play his best."  Stanford fans are entitled to have high expectations.  The coach either needs to figure out way to meet them with Nunes, like yesterday, or explain to the fans why he thinks Nottingham would be worse than Nunes.

And did anyone else think that Hogan got the quick hook?  There were a couple of plays in a row, then the sack and "YANK."  Really?  Was he causing more harm than Nunes?  The guys on the radio were hoping that Nunes was done for the day.  Husak hates him.

The boos have got to go.  Nunes is 5-0 at home.  Coach Shaw is 17-4 in his career.  The jokers that are so inclined to boo have lost all perspective at this point.  These kids are winning and studying at Stanford.  The game is not entertaining enough?  Stay home and watch ole mighty SC.  They are plenty entertaining, but with all of their talent they have 2 conferences losses.  Or perhaps Oklahoma and its flashy 2 losses at home.

Is Nunes the best QB in the USA?  Clearly no.  Does any QB in the USA have a better winning percentage in front of his fans at home?  Definitely no.  Nunes is not Barks or Luck let's deal with it with a touch more class.

The team was playing a classic trap game.  Only a fool (ie. Wilner) would actually have thought they would cover a 21 point spread.  The team won and few people got hurt.  Stanford still controls its destiny for the Rose Bowl, and is likely now the most likely to get a BCS at-large from the Pac-12 should they fall to Oregon.  Comparatively speaking Stanford did just fine.

Booo?  I guess those types were warming up for Halloween, but by all historic standards this TEAM is doing just fine.  FWIW - Better than the 1992 team that was honored throughout the game.

The team is likely to have three losses by year-end.  A loss to BCS CG worthy Oregon, a loss to BCS CG worthy Notre Dame and a road loss for Nunes first trip away from home.  the same team that beat OSU by the way.  That's boo worthy?  Wow!!!

I don' like the booing either - I hate it actually and will NEVER boo a Stanford player playing for nothing more than love of the game and a scholarship.

Yet I understand the motivation behind those doing the booing.  For eight games fans have been wiling to believe that Coach Shaw knows better than them despite the evidence on the field.  Casual fan, long-time fan, ex-players and professionals are all seeing what Shaw evidently does not and trust is wearing thin.  The boos were not for the student athlete but for the coach who seems to be oblivious to the evidence mounting weekly.

But if you are next to someone booing, whether it's targeting the coach or the kid, remind 'em it's a game played by 18-22 year olds who risk their health, limbs and critical joints for nothing more than school pride and an education. Enjoy the moment (and wins) and swallow the frustrations.

I haven't booed, but you can be sure it will continue if our offensive woes continue. The fan base has high expectations, many of which are justified. This team has many ingredients for success, and many fans feel a better QB would get this team to the next level. Maybe Nottingham's worse, but he sure didn't look like it to most fans and writers covering Stanford football in the offseason. The whole team is meritocratic, where every position needs to be earned and proven week to week, with the exception of the QB. You have to understand some of the angst.

Your rhetorical question, is Nunes the best QB in the USA, understates how poorly Nunes has played. The better question might be, is he the worst starting QB in the nation. I have nothing agst. the young man and root for him each week. It's not his fault he's in over his head and keeps drowning out there. The fault is squarely with his coach(es), who are responsible for pulling a drowning player out of the water, to extend the metaphor.

And, no, yesterday's game was not a trap. Stanford was not overlooking WSU in looking ahead to lowly Colorado.

I would love Stanford to end the regular season at 9-3. The Rose Bowl might come calling in that case. If OSU and UCLA stack the box as UW and WSU did, cheating up safeties and daring our QB to find the open man (and not lock on the double-covered receiver as he's wont to do), and if our offensive brain trust keeps running up the gut, then I have a hard time imagining 9-3. We'll see.

Re: How many wake up calls does this team need? - Oasis - 10-28-2012

Generally I find booing deplorable for all the reasons mentioned.

But I did boo Stanford once.  In 1975, we were way ahead of Army at Stanford Stadium.  These very nice, agreeable military folks were there, trying to keep their spirits up despite the score with the theme from "Patton" and the like.  We could've run the ball up the middle and won by four TDs.  But Christensen kept throwing long passes, which Army's DBs simply couldn't defend.  So we ran up the score on honorable opponents and probably made them feel bad for no reason.  That deserved a boo or two.

Army beat us the next year and that cost Coach Chris his job.

Les Miles (LSU 2010) - team finished the season ranked #8 in the nation, with an 11-2 record, and played in the National Championship game the next year.  Heard of him/them?

Thanks to a great final game in the Cotton Bowl, in which he threw 3 TDs, Jordan Jefferson (who recently reintroduced himself to his local police department), finished the season completing 56% of his passes for 6.75 yards/attempt and 7 TDs (including the aforementioned 3) against 10 INTs.  Makes Nunes look like Peyton Manning!?!

Ohh...  and while that apparent-idiot, Les Miles, started him in all 13 games that seaon, Jarrett Lee played in 12 of them (since all smart coaches do that when their starter struggles).  Lee threw all of 2 TDs and had a Y/A ratio of 6.44.

I'm not saying Shaw is right.  May he is just plain stubborn?  I don't know him personally, but neither do most of you, and I'm confident that he's seen our alternatives run this offense a few more times than any of us have.  Maybe he just doesn't want to win games, so he's intentionally keeping his best QB option off of the field?!?

Y'all... let's just accept the fact that we're playing Es-Ee-See football (great defense with an often-frustrating offense) this season!  While I'm still sorely disappointed by the Washington loss, I'll take were where are in the Pac-12 standings and national rankings right now -- Go Cardinal!

Brian Kelly kept Tommy Rees in basically all of last season, except when he had his hand forced by injury.

I don't mean this disparagingly, but the arguments we're having sound exactly like the ones N.otre D.ame fans were having last year.

Again, if I were Shaw, I'd refrain from hanging my hat on this analogy.

Interesting you mention Rees last year.  I would take 2011 Tommy Rees over Nunes.  Many of the stats are comparable but passing completion percentage is much, much better.

2011 Rees:  269/411 (65.5%) for 2871 yards (6.99 ypa).  20 TD, 14 INT.  133.4 Rating.
2012 Nunes: 121/230 (52.6%) for 1620 yards (7.04 ypa).  10 TD, 7 INT.  120.0 Rating.
