Re: Nunes for Voldemort 2013! - Farm93 - 10-29-2012

I hate playing the Nunes could be better game.  And yet, I really don't like playing the Nottingham might transfer game.

Still the rumor is logical enough.  Nunes as the starter does imply that Nottingham is not very good.  That is probably not the best assessment of his skills, but an unavoidable assumption.

Sitting behind Luck COULD have meant you were the second best QB of the generation.  Sitting behind Nunes does not have a similar talent ceiling.  It probably would be very hard to sit there knowing that Nunes' play reflects poorly on you and the staff seems ready to start younger QBs after the Nunes' era.

I hope the transfer thing is just a rumor created by those that know him well enough to assume he is frustrated, but do not actually know him well enough to really know the deal.

Well, Stanford has 7 quarterbacks on the roster, all of whom potentially would be returning next year (though I suspect Robbie Picazo, a fourth-year senior, is playing his last year at Stanford).

Ryan Burns comes in next year, so the numbers game would imply to me that at least one quarterback will leave.

Thanks for the correction, Garvin. That's what I thought as well but the gostanford.com profile lists him as a senior. Perhaps those profiles don't count redshirts?

When John Elway arrived on campus, two QBs left - Grayson Rogers to UOP and Babe Laufenberg to Indiana.  Don't recall hearing much about Rogers, but Laufenberg had a decent career at Indiana and did play in the NFL

If this rumor of Nottingham transferring is true, I would think it has more to do with Hogan than Nunes.

I wish Nottingham wouldn't transfer, but it's clearly a decision he's made in his best interest.  Transferring devalues the Stanford degree in relation to the football aspect of being a scholar-athlete.  Can't really blame him though if that's his decision calculus.

I think Garvin has some spirit guide or Ouija board to recall that much history.

I remember meeting one fan in 1979 who was adamant that Laufenberg got a raw deal at Stanford.  I didn't even know anybody by that name was there.

The treatment of Nottingham is disappointing.  The coaches must be seeing things at practice that are invisible to us. From what I see in the games, I'd put Nottingham and Hogan in and give them a chance.

Wasn't Nunes also injured for most or all of last fall?  So he missed practice time there as well.

Thanks for the info on Palmer Sonomabule, I didn't remember that at all about Palmer!  I will now assume Nunes is going to win the Voldemort next year before moving on to become a so-so NFL quarterback.

Also, is there actually any report that Nottingham is transferring, or is this just rumor from some guy on a message board?

Palmer's first full year as starer looked remarkably like where Nunes is headed. The general consensus on Palmer throughout the conference during his early years was also similar to Nunes' -- that he'd never be a serviceable D1 QB.

Palmer in 2000: 228/415 (54.9%) for 2914 yards, 16 Passing TDs; 18 Interceptions; 7.0 Y/A; 118 rating
Nunes in 2012 so far: 121/230 (52.6%) for 1620 yards, 10 passing TDs; 7 interceptions; 7.0 Y/A; 120 rating

In case anyone thinks I'm seriously suggesting that Nunes will win a Voldemort -- I'm not. I'm merely pointing out an interesting parallel* that seemed to fit with the thread.

Bummer if Nottingham is transferring, but agree with Yvonne. Can't blame him at all.

* Of course, Palmer was a red-shirt Soph at the time (had started 8 games before 2000 though) while Nunes is a Senior. Plus I'm hoping Shaw is nothing like Paul Hackett and we can fix our offensive woes without a coaching change.

I don't know where to begin on comparing Palmer to Nunes.  I saw Palmer from his early games to his later games at USC and it was clear from the get-go that he could be very good when he found his rhythm.  You also saw clear and steady improvement from Palmer as the season progressed.  Nunes is not showing signs of significant improvement and I have zero indication from watching him play that he will significantly improve.

He is not a good QB.  We are never going to be a team like Alabama or LSU that can have a bad QB but still be an elite team due to elite skill talent at every other position pretty much.  We need a decent or better QB to be an elite team.  I will be very, very depressed if Nunes is starting next year.

And good for Nottingham if he transfers.  I can't blame him.

Thank you, NYC.  The comparison of Nunes to Palmer is . . . well, I'll restrain myself and simply say "hard to believe."

Somnabule, when you watch Nunes play QB, what do your eyes tell you about (a) his accuracy, and (b) his ability to go through his progressions/reads?  The former should never be an issue for a starting D1 quarterback; the latter is more understandable, but should improve with experience.  We haven't seen any improvement on that front.
