Re: Goodbye, UGLY - Hank 91 - 11-16-2012

I propose that we build the Andrew Luck Research Library and Quarterback School in Meyer's place. Andrew, of course, would design the new structure, but I'm thinking it would be in the shape of an Axe.

The world will not miss UGLY.  After about a month at Stanford I figured there had to be something better.  At first I would go to the UGLY basement, which was part of the Main Library, and stay there after it closed. I remember being there Halloween night 1973 shortly after a couple of people were killed on campus.  The stacks were pretty dark and the ventilation system was making weird noises.  I was studying for a test when I heard what sounded like a gasp behind me. Scared me to death but it was nothing...or was it?

Later I migrated to a very nice little carrel, really little more than a table, on level 4 of the Main stacks. The branch of a tree grew right up to it.  In the winter it got a little cold but in the fall and spring I would open the window and a wonderful breeze would blow in.  And there was a lot of squirrel and bird activity whenever you wanted a break.  It was a great place to study.  No distractions.

The Green is much nicer, but the Main had a certain austere charm.

When I was a student, nobody used the name Meyer, ever; I'd guess most people on campus, asked for directions to the Meyer Library, would have said, "I don't know that building."

So what was that big library called when you were a student?

When I arrived in Fall 1977, it was usually called Meyer.

I'll add that Meyer was a good place to take a nap between classes.  Quiet and never crowded during the day.  Big stuffed chairs to snooze in.

Those big chairs must have migrated over to Green in the early 00's (they certainly looked like they'd lived a long life). Don't recall anything comfortable in Meyer but took many fine naps in the bowels of Green in some of those big green and magenta chairs...that is if it was just too damn bright to get a quality nap in a big grassy field somewhere.

....man New York sucks, why did I ever move here....

Those chairs were the absolute best for naps.
