Boy, talk about a program publicly coming apart at the seams.  Just embarrassing all the way around

The players' disrespectful comments show very poor manners ... no different than being invited to a party, showing up and complaining about the host's home, guest list, food and entertainment. If you don't want to go, you decline the invitation.

Maybe I'm throwing my parties the wrong way Kathy but I'm yet to make money on any of 'em :)

Bowls are much more like business trips, not parties. And plenty of travelers (grown men and women, not college kids) openly criticize places they went to on business on twitter and FB etc. I don't know if you folks have ever participated in team sports, but these guys are team players -- if the school decides to go, individual players aren't going to decline or quit the team over a destination. In fact, if they did, I'd consider that a much bigger character flaw than being honest about their opinion of the destination.

Besides, some of the players may never have been to the place before. How would they know to decline before even seeing the place?

Karma.
Those ill-mannered, spoiled brats deserved that loss. I'm a business journalist, and I've never heard a business traveler diss a destination like that. In business, one learns the art of discretion, with full knowledge of the effect of the spoken word. As I sit here in my snowbound farmhouse (4" so far & a round of freezing rain still to come -- happy New Year, y'all), I raise a Champagne toast to Georgia Tech and Jacketree, wherever you are: good job, rambling wrecks!

The advantage of growing up in just about the middle of nowhere is that I find something to like about every place I visit.  Even Lansing, Michigan (Bell's Beer!).

From the LA Times, this post-game comment by Kiffin seems to reflect his and his team's attitude...

"Even if we had won this game we would still be very disappointed in our season," Kiffin said. "It's well below our standards and we'll evaluate everything."

Re: The delightfully tacky world of Lane Kiffin - fullmetal - 01-02-2013

We scheduled a joint watch party with the U$C club in Austin...we were outnumbered, but not by the scoreboard.  The $C fans generally kept to themselves (none were obnoxious) and were clinging to hope near the end, but it was not to be for them.  They departed quietly.  Maybe they've had enough abuse from Texas fans in the last few years regarding a prior Rose Bowl...

This sounds like the rationalization of a child who either doesn't want to admit that he did not prepare (for a test) or that he was beaten by a better team (in a sporting event).  "Well, it didn't really matter to us," meaning, well, we didn't really try, which of course covers your own sorry ass performance while cheapening the victory or your opponent.

Of course, Kiffin specializes in childish behavior.

I'm sure that kind of attitude will endear him to NFL coaches.  ::)

That kind of attitude is what leads teams littered with individually great talent to underachieve.  And those attitudes only develop on teams with coaches who don't know the importance of, or how to build teams.

Can you imagine how badly Marqise Lee wants out right now?  He's facing a year with the coach going into the season on the hot seat, likely to get canned after the sanctions are over next year, breaking in a new QB, on a team poised to quit and point fingers as soon as it faces the slightest adversity.

I dunno...that sounds like the kind of comment heard from on a pretty much weekly basis from a whole host of talented NFL wide receivers.  As long as he doesn't mind moving every year or two, he might be able to parlay his skills -- and attitude -- into a fairly decent tenure in the league...  ;)

I confess to no small amount of schadenfreude heading north on 210 out of Pasadena on Wednesday listening to a couple of different sports talk radio stations on which the second most important topic [after general moaning and graoning about the Lakers] was clearly how to make Lame Kitten just go away.  Many of the things being said about him, and about U.SC football generally, for that matter, were harsher than some of the strings HERE!
