I also sense that Brian K. is a competent coach. One of the things that changed under his regime is player development, which was quite lame under Weiss who specialized in turning 5 star recruits into average players. No, ND will not fade away soon. they will be tough opponents for the foreseeable future.Â

This is the same team that our anemic Nunes offense nearly (did?) took down at their place, and that needed a lot of luck to be a TERRIBLE Pitt team. Kelly is not a worldbeater.

Chip Kelly shouted our praises during the trophy presentation for the Fiesta Bowl...no press like free press...from your biggest intraconference rival. Nice.

Kelly was all class during the trophy presentation, and I think he spent almost as much time praising K-State/Snyder as he did talking about Oregon. And then he threw Stanford a bunch of time too, which I was not expecting. Is this a sign that he's about to depart for greener pastures?

dabigv or fullmetal, can you give some more details on what Kelly said about Stanford, for those of us who turned the game off?
Re: Our rooting interests/season end final ranking -

Lou Holtz was praising Oregon and talking about how the Ducks could beat any team out there...and then he said this.
"It's a shame that the field goal went through by Stanford."Â --Lou Holtz
Geez. Now I hope ND loses by a FG in triple OT (score should be 14-17, Bama) and Holtz has to retire out of shame.
Kelly said something about Stanford being a really good team and praised David Shaw (yup, mentioned Shaw) for "what he's done there."Â My memory is a little fuzzy; I spent too much time thinking about ways to fly GoodGrief to Miami so that he can punch Holtz in the nose after that comment in the post-game show.

In response to question about coming close to playing for a National Championship and maintaining their focus-
Chip Kelly-
"You know, we lost to a real good Stanford team, David Shaw's done a great job, but our guy's know you gotta come back...."

Ahh right, right. More than I'd ever expect from Kelly. Holtz and Mark May need to swallow a couple of socks.

I've always liked Kelly's interviews/press conferences. There are some real gems in Ted Miller's highlights from the (pre-)Fiesta Bowl news conference (including a compliment to Marecic):

The Sportscenter recap of the Fiesta Bowl leaves out any idiotic comments from Holtz/May, but Rece Davis gets to mention that Oregon is undefeated...in regulation.

My reasons for rooting against ND:
1. Not a single Notre Dame fan admitted that they got lucky and the refs made a mistake.
2. Lou Holtz.
3. Doug Randolph.
4. The media non-sense about the "SAT Bowl" between "two outstanding academic institutions."Â
5. Oh, the entitlement.Â
Enough said, Roll Tide.

Doug Randolph? I saw him tweeting players like Aziz and he acted like he was Stanford all the way. Yes he flipped to ND but I don't think he was going to get admitted, so he flipped to ND to lock up a spot in their class which was actually full on LBs at the time...maybe his parents wanted him closer to home but I never got that vibe to begin with so I doubt it.

Not totally sure that's true.
I recall the idea being raised on the flagpole once or twice on the ND site.
Needless to say, there weren't a lot of salutes.

I'm not sure the circles of devout Catholics really intersect with the brand of USB football fanatics on their board. Just a hunch.

Do the reasons to root against ND really need to extend beyond Lou Holtz? Why that man is allowed, much less paid, to speak (err, mumble incoherently) on television is beyond my comprehension.

They need to put him out to pasture if only because he's darn near unintelligible. For some reason, I happen to be fluent in grumpy old man (is that the real life equivalent of parseltongue?), so I was able to catch that bon mot he made last night on live TV about what a "shame" it was that the "field goal went in" to sink Oregon.

Heard that too, right before I switched the channel to something other than a pre-BCS N.D. love fest.
The other thing I heard Holtz say was that he believes Oregon is and will finish as the #2 team in the country. That should be saved by ESPN, so that when 'Bama beats the domers silly we can all quickly note that even in his opinion that team from Indiana should be #3 at best.

Wow, Texas A&M and Johny Football are legit. Very impressed with them (unlike with K-State and Klein, very disappointing). Alas, this means they might pass Stanford, especially if Alabama beats Notre Dame.
I know it's not a popular opinion here... but personally I hope the Irish win: It would make Stanford look better this year, give us a shot at top-5, and beating the National champion next year at the Farm would be sweet. Plus, I can't stand teams that disregard academics and sign 100+ players.
