The self-reported 4.9 was in high school.  Clock times obviously vary, but I think it's safe to say he got faster in college.

I find it hard to believe he improved by four tenths of a second in college.

Someone did a study of this that I wish I could find, but IIRC it showed that 40 times on average don't improve at all throughout a college career; instead, players get heavier while keeping the same speed.

We're not talking about averages or what's typical here... we're talking about what appears to have been the case with one kid.  Was it "average" when Dennis Rodman (reportedly) grew 6-7 inches in college?  Nope.  Do you have some reason to believe that Lennay Kekua informed him of his high school 40 time via Twitter?  ;)

I conceded that clock times can vary (particularly "unofficial" times recorded and reported by amateurs), so maybe it was only a 0.3 second improvement, but I think we can all agree that the combine times are about as consistent as any, and I can't imagine why a high school kid would exaggerate his time on the up-side (so maybe he actually got 0.5 seconds faster)?!?  In any case, and despite what's "normal" in terms of human physical development, I'll stand by my suggestion that he appears to have gotten "fast in college".Â
