Re: Spring practice media thread - OutsiderFan - 03-03-2013

Pretty concerning to read the comment from Wilner about Lyons.  I know I just assumed he would take over for Brown.  But If his foot injury is still holding him back, he may never be fully healthy and may never seize a starting spot.

Harris, Amanam or Pippens may step up, but I'm not much of a Browning believer.  Given the depth at RB, how about moving Sanders to CB?  He's probably the best athlete available to play the position, and he played it pretty well in high school.  He's listed at 5-10 and 191, so he seems to be physically sturdy enough for CB.  Sanders can always move back to RB when Peppers arrives :)

Thoughts?

Not sure Barry would want to do that?  How much say do players have in position changes?

How should we read Wilner on this, just a general statement of Lyons' tenure so far, or a specific judgment about Lyons' ability or inability right at this time? I was encouraged that Harris and maybe Amanam potentially could be in the picture. Could Olugbode or Madhu play the nickel position? Or does nickel require essentially a cornerback?

Hmm, yeah, it's hard to tell what Wilner's saying there, if it's his judgment or something Mason relayed.

Regardless, if our biggest problem on defense is that we're not sure about 1 cornerback spot, I'm not really all that worried. Last year weren't we replacing nearly the entire secondary?

Re: Spring practice media thread - OutsiderFan - 03-03-2013

Offenses try to get mismatches with safeties covering WRs, so the nickel and dime backs are always corners if possible.  Amanam has more quickness than a typical safety, and so too does Harris.

I think the most important consideration in terms of Wilner's assessment of Lyons vis-a-vis his foot, is if he's basing it on on conjecture or he has otherwise learned the foot is hampering him from a coach, team source, or Lyons himself.  I really don't know, but the fact Lyons appears not to be living up to expectations pre foot injury (and the fact foot injuries can be quite problematic), suggests there might be a bit of fire from where Wilner's smoke is coming.

Re: Spring practice media thread - washingtonismoney - 03-03-2013

Lyons is disappointing relative to the outsize expectations placed upon him by fans. But relative to "normal college football player" standards, he had a pretty good season for (effectively) a redshirt freshman -- he was an important backup on a really good defense. Not that concerned.

Drukarev's report: http://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1478726

Really hoping this time it's real re: Vaughters.

Does anyone want to run a pool for how many times Shaw says "phenomenal" in an interview?

Yeah, if this is accurate and can be maintained through the season our front seven could be better than last year. Scary thought for opposing QBs...

More or less often than Tara says "we're very excited"?

Some nice interviews in the Daily's story about the most recent practice: http://www.stanforddaily.com/2013/03/05/crower-top-candidate-for-back-up-quarterback/

Re: Spring practice media thread - PrinceLightfoot - 03-06-2013

Plenty of great news that begins with the development of our offensive line starting at around the 18 minute mark (after all the wonderful baseball information). The comparison to last year's practices is very promising for the offense.

Glad that Crower is making progress and hope he can make second string.  With Hogan running a lot, we need an average-to-very good Division I back-up QB.

Also really promising is that Usua and Ronnie Harris could play cornerback if needed.  Can't have too many good cb.

Really great to hear that Peat is doing well at LT.  A great OL can make even an unimaginative scheme look good by sheer force of will.

Re: Spring practice media thread - DC - 03-11-2013

Gee six TEs on the roster now plus three more coming in.  Using that many roster spaces on one position, hopefully three of them will work out to be Pac-12 quality TEs.

Well, two are walk-ons, and two others (three if you count Kaumatule) are converted DEs...

I thought the analysis was pretty accurate until the bit that read
Quote:Realistic Best Case Record: 10-2
Worst Case Record: 6-6
Likely Finish: 8-4

To me (as an admitted homer), those are all two losses more than they should be, though it could certainly be argued that worst case record could be 7-5. I don't buy 6-6 (how many major injuries would have to occur for that to happen?!) and 8-4 as a likely finish would be a disappointment.
