Speaking as someone who was in Knoxville that weekend, nope, Tennessee lost in the semi-finals to Dawn Staley's hard-luck Virginia team.  We beat the Cavaliers in the semis and Auburn, who had knocked off #1 Louisiana Tech and the mammoth Venus Lacy in the semis, to win.

Not sure we would've won that game playing the Volunteers on their home floor.  But you're right, we did get a lot of help from lower seeds pulling upsets - 48 teams then, so we had a bye to play #9 Hawai'i, who had beaten #8 Montana.  Then #5 Ole Miss who had beaten #4 UNLV.  Then in the regional final at Stanford, beat #7 Arkansas which had upset #2 seed Georgia and #3 seed Stephen F. Austin.

The big upsets were UVa knocking out Tennessee in one regional semi, and #1 and undefeated LaTech losing in the other national semifinal.

UVa went on to lose in the Final Four three straight years - in 90 to Stanford in the semi, in 91 to Tennessee in the final in overtime (after beating an upstart named Geno Auriemma in the semi), then in 92, when Val Whiting, Rachel Hemmer, Molly Goodenbour, Kate Paye et al absolutely devestated Staley by beating them 66-65 in the semifinal in the circle of hell known as the LA Coliseum Arena.

Viking_Guy, sorry to nitpick, but it was the LA Sports Arena, next to the Coliseum. When I was growing up, I attended many Laker games there with my dad. I was also an usher for USC (???) basketball games my senior year in high school. USC went 24-2 that year with the 2 losses to you know who across town. Only conference champions went to the NCAA then, so tough luck for USC.

I think VG is talking about 1990. LA Sports Arena was 1992. I was there. You're right, though, it was the sports arena, not the Colosseum.

You're right, I just know it by the wrong name; thought it was part of the Coliseum complex.  1990 was Knoxville, 1991 was New Orleans (at UNO's arena at that point), and 1992 was at that mausoleum in LA.  I just remember traveling there for a men's b-ball game during that timeframe, and having a grand total of about 1100 people in it for USC.

1991 was a tough one; a great team, until injuries to Trisha Stevens and Julie Zielstra late in the season left us completely reliant on Sonja Henning and Val Whiting.  Kelly Dougherty (sp?) played a tough game in trying to fill in against Tennessee, and Sonja Henning was IMO our best true point guard ever, but the Vols had the prior season's disappointment to fuel them and beat us in the semis.  But a great time was had by all on Bourbon Street - I think I was awake the entire time I was there, doing the typical tourist things (as in, hurricanes and other potent libations at night, beignets at Cafe du Monde in the morning).
