'13 QBs are Hogan, Crower, Lloyd, Olson and Burns
'14 QBs will be Hogan, Crower, Lloyd, Burns and Chryst (and probably a FR walk-on)
lots of talent on roster and with the possibility of Rosen being added in '15
RR on Lloyd, they've installed a package for him so I suspect he gets game reps this fall (assuming no injuries)

Where have I heard that before?

Lloyd has good speed. I think we will see him running an Alex Loukas type of option package in an effort to get him in the open field.

This is gonna make Stanford's D even more dangerous. Having Crower scout as a pocket passer and Lloyd as a dual threat. Maybe this is why there isn't more chatter about Lloyd switching positions. He's more valuable in practice pretending to be Hundley and Mariota.

And Manziel.

I like how you are thinking, Oman. Along those lines forgot to add Lloyd as Braxton Miller. Alternatively Crower plays the role of McCarron? If that happens, he should get at least a temporary chest tattoo.

I think Texas A&M is the team we'll play if/when we get to the MNC

So how did that game turn out?
Both teams came in undefeated with a National Championship on the line. Final score
- Stanford 7, Alabama 7, the last tie in Rose Bowl history.
Keller -
JohnR34231 - 07-05-2013
After being ranked 7 out of 18 in the early going in the Elite 11 finals, he faltered in the stretch and didn't make the top 11.
That's two lackluster Elite 11 camps for him; he must not shine in this type of environment.
What, if anything, this has to do with this his attractiveness as a college prospect is anyone's guess. Hopefully not very much.
Comments from anyone who watched the proceedings on TV (I didn't) would certainly be welcome.

It was kind of strange. The folks from the recruiting websites loved him. But the coaches preferred the other two QBs when crunch time came. So who knows. I don't think it's a particularly big deal -- Elite 11's prognostication record is historically not any better than the collective recruiting writers' record.

From what I saw, the Elite 11 coaches valued QBs who were able to make a quick decision (good or bad) and threw the ball with high velocity every time regardless of touch; a stick-it-in-there approach which I found very curious from such a highly regarded camp. Dropback quickness, feet movement, throwing mechanics, touch, and catchability of the pass all took a backseat in evaluation. That is what THOSE coaches valued but as WIM stated that is hardly consensus.

So based on your observation, where did Keller fall short if you use that criterion (other than the obvious which is he didn't do those things)?

Yes, this. Keller was playing much safer, while the guy who played ahead of him seemed to throw every fifth ball up for grabs. He had a ton of near-picks that most coaches would never put up with.

From what I saw in watching -- and Chryst only played three or four possessions in one half of play that was televised -- he might've gotten in his own way too much. The 7 on 7 format is set up so that you have to get 20 yards for a first down, which obviously encourages quarterbacks to throw downfield while demanding that defenses defend against the deep pass more than they would otherwise. (And, obviously, they don't have to honor the run at all.) So it's a skewed version of football.
My interpretation of what went wrong is colored by my hope that Chryst develops into a stud, but it looked like he was simply executing his reads. The deep stuff was taken away, so he checked down often and settled for five- to seven-yard gains. With only three downs, that doesn't move the chains or produce points. If that's the case, there probably isn't any cause for concern. He was just taking what the defense was giving him, which is always a positive trait in a quarterback, especially one in the Stanford system.
Watching it all, and then watching every other quarterback fearlessly rifling the ball downfield, I wondered why he simply didn't adjust. Then I remembered something that Wade Boggs once said about umpires with bad strike zones. He was asked why he didn't just swing at pitches an inch or two off the plate when he knew that a particular umpire had a strike zone that went an inch or two off the plate. He responded that he simply refused to alter the strike zone or the approach that he had burned into his mind. It obviously worked for him. So perhaps Chryst, the son of a quarterbacks coach, simply refused to adapt to this bastardized brand of football.
It should also be noted that Trent Dilfer and Tom Luginbill had glowing things to say about him while he was playing. They emphasized his size, strength, arm strength, and accuracy, and also talked about the brobdingnagian advantage that his father's connection to the 49ers gives him, and not for reasons you might think. I always thought his edge would come from listening to coaches and watching film, but they mentioned that being able to throw to NFL receivers would help adapt to the speed increase going from high school to the Pac-12.
One other thing of note from the telecast. The announcers talked over and over about the trend in college football towards slimming down the playbook, a trend which hasn't yet hit Stanford. I think this just gives Stanford another recruiting advantage. David Shaw has talked about how easy it was for Andrew Luck to learn the Colts' offense, thanks mainly to his experience with the Stanford offense. If Shaw can sit down with these elite quarterbacks and tell them that they could choose to go somewhere and throw 40 times a game and put up ungodly numbers, or they could come to Stanford and learn to be an NFL quarterback, I think we'll get the ones who truly want to be great. (Actually, I have no doubt that this already happens.)

Thanks for the input. It makes me feel better about Keller's performance.
I'm a little surprised that such unsound QB practices such as fearlessly rifling the ball downfield and putting it up for grabs would not only be tolerated but encouraged in a prestigious camp like this. I suppose it has something to do with the entertainment value of the proceedings, which the sponsors have to be concerned about now that TV has been invited in.
Anyway I am now convinced that Keller's performance did not sully him as a big time college prospect, which is of course what I hoped I would be.

How about the next time there are a bunch of recruits visiting, the Niners host a "Bring Your Son (and his new friends) to Work" day? That wouldn't be a recruiting violation would it?

Burns, I love the possibilities of having a QB who is bigger and stronger than 95% of the linebackers in the college football
That is the most ridiculous statement or prediction I've heard in quite some time.
Have you ever seen Burns? The kid was 6'5 and 230 lbs and had an NFL physique
last summer. I have no doubt he'll be at least 245 and one of the strongest players on the team after 3 full offseasons in the weight program
while Burns may turn into a large QB he's never going to be bigger and stronger than 95% of college LBs.

As long as he can put the smackdown on out of position safeties, I'm OK with that.
