Okay, how's this for memory?
I do recall the story of Robert Smith. He was a great RB at Ohio State and also had aspirations of a medical career. In 1991, I was anticipating the transfer of Smith to Stanford. It was headline news when he had quit the team at Ohio State (I remember reading the story on Sports Illustated, which is available here:)

The reason I though Smith was coming to Stanford? In 1991, the 49ers were still at the top of the NFL world despite Bill Walsh stepping down in 1989. The 49ers had John Frank, who was one of the premier tight ends in the league. But Frank suddenly retired, as he had plans for medical school. Frank was also an Ohio State alum and had spoken to Smith. Due to Frank's connection with Denny Green and Bill Walsh, he had good things to say about Stanford to Smith. I was waiting for an announcement that alas never came. Smith patched things up and returned to OSU.
BTW, when you read that article I've linked, you'll see Gordon Gee's name mentioned prominently. I'm sorry, I know he's a respected academician, but there's something about the guy that makes him detestable.

I didn't realize Brian Bosworth was that old.

That Michigan transfer during Walsh II sounds very familiar. I believe he had a neck or back injury which ended his football career before ever playing a snap for Stanford.
Dave Ottmar was a very good punter. #19.
On another note I have been watching Stanford games from last season on the Pac-12 network's "Football in 60". Fabulous way to review the games....Kula gets better and better with each viewing. He was a complete football player.
The Pac-12 network is going to be showing much, much older games on something called "Varsity Days". We're talking Pac-8.

Jon Ritchie transferred from Michigan. Long career.
