But seriously, the human experience is full of really dumb things that we do because we enjoy them. If the purpose of society was to maximize every human's time on this earth, then a lot of things would be out the window. Alcohol is an easy one, it certainly kills many many more people than football does.

I think if football players, and their families in the case of Pop Warner and high school football, are made aware of the risks as they are known, there is nothing morally wrong with the sport of college football.

This.  Life isn't about doing everything you can solely to extend your life span.  There are activities we all (likely) engage in which are likely to leave us with fewer days on this planet.  And we do those activities knowingly and happily.  Football brings a ton of enjoyment to a significant portion of the US population.

Where were you brought up?  I was brought up amongst big Germans and little Mexican Americans.

The roster spot that was open to me was field goal kicker.

I think that argument is hiding somewhere behind the dog fighting argument.

I'll admit to getting a visceral thrill from big hits when they go against the opponents.

I pay more money to support professional soccer than I do college football, but I do feel a twinge of guilt that I am encouraging this.

(And Chris Owusu would be playing forward for the US Nats if he had decided to play soccer.)

That's a dubious claim, Lefty. The most democratic sport for youth is wrestling. Competitors are paired by weight and age.

Considering his poor touch catching, I'd be frightened to see how bad his touch with his foot would be. Then again, USMNT has played Eddie Johnson and Robbie Findley before, so I suppose the point stands.

My guess is that, of the players currently on the roster, Usua Amanam would've been the best soccer player.

Ha.  Andrew Luck would have been a monster central defender.  Coach on the field, etc.
