As one half-American once said: "You can always count on America to do the right thing, after they've tried everything else."

We're sunk. Hello San Antonio.

Don't be so dramatic. It means we have less of a chance to upset Oregon, but we will still be favored in every other game this year.

I can't imagine beating a fired up Under Stanford Control in the Coliseum without @BennyG49. Oregon to BCS NCG. South winner to Rose Bowl. Stanford to San Antonio.

I'm used to seeing deeper analysis on the posts on this board.

Re: Status of Injuries for Oregon Game - yvonne - 10-29-2013

I admit, a lot of this is visceral, but I remember watching a series in which Ben sat out following an injury against UCLA. I kept glancing over as the trainers worked on him. There was a big dropoff in production, and the defense yielded its only TD then.

Judging by Henry Anderson's tweet, I'd say he's likely to be back for Oregon, but will he be as explosive? The line's already thin enough that Kaumatule has been switched from offense. The lower level of talent on the line will probably necessitate blitzing more, which will make the secondary more vulnerable. I don't think Gardner's absence can be overstated. That said, from everything we've seen so far, we can still expect him to be the locker room and sideline influence that Shayne was during his injury.

Any more than one additional loss, and Stanford will be in San Antonio, and not in a BCS bowl.

Re: Status of Injuries for Oregon Game - Treebound - 10-29-2013

Ben has been playing with injury for some time.  The guy is a warrior and he will be missed, but injuries like this are a part of the game, especially for the big guys in the trenches.  His ability to step it up with this injury nagging him is admirable and Sark, if he had any class, should make an apology.

I'm hopeful that Anderson and others can leverage the extra time to get back to health and I'm not ready to throw in the towel and settle for San Antonio or anything short of Pasadena.  Defense wins championships and this D has heart and won the day/night against O State and others.  Our ability to keep contain and tackle on the edges and in space will be tested by Mariota and co.

I'm guessing Murphy has another pick 6 to help a struggling O put points on the board.  We need to get some takeaways and put the Ducks on their heals early.  Ideally, Hogan (and Shaw with the playcalling) has his best game to date.  We'll need it for the biggest Pac12 game of the year.  Having it on a Thursday night really stinks for those of us with families.

I do wonder whether Shaw is sandbagging on some of this stuff*. IIRC he went over-the-top with talking about difficult it would be, how good the Ducks were, etc. last year.

*(obviously the Gardner stuff can't be faked, though I'd forgive Sark a triumphant told-you-so if it turned out to be a hoax.)

Re: Status of Injuries for Oregon Game - Treebound - 10-29-2013

I wish that was the case WIM.  I too, would publicly forgive Sark, but it's not going to happen.    We will be down one Big Ben for the rest of the year, but I'm thankful that he, Shayne and Gaff came back to give it their all!    I can't begin to imagine the year without those three!  Huzzah!

Moments like this one, when you are forced to "step back" a little bit and look at the bigger picture (the same thing happens after losing a significant game) ... remind me what a big deal it is to me that I feel that I really like my team's players on a personal level. I usually feel like they share my values, I admire them, etc.  I wonder how much there might be fans of, for example, Oregon, that might love their team but feel that some of the players are simply not very much of the same world as they are. Would not be as fun to root for a team in that way.

Renewing the original post, asking for status of the injured -- below were the non-gardner injuries. Any news?  Also -- specifically -- our kicker... I thought he was only out one game, wonder what is up there. Have happy memories of Williamson versus the ducks.

Cajuste;
Anderson;
Williamson;
Hoffpauir.

Garner to coaching assistant - ChicagoCard - 10-30-2013

Maybe his teammates collectively will raise their level of play a smidgen...

It used to be that Gardner and either Mauro or H. Anderson would move inside in the nickel. Maybe Parry among others will play in the nickel package now? Also, I've never seen an update on Nwafor other than "he's in a boot."

Yeah, let's try to keep things a little optimistic around here.

If you want pessimism, head over to the Bootboard. You'll find all you want (and then some) there.

According to Lombardi, Nwafor is "[o]ut for a while."

This is from Stanford.rivals.com:
----

Quote:hree questionable: Kicker Jordan Williamson, receiver Devon Cajuste and defensive end Henry Anderson remain questionable for the Oregon game.

"All three have a chance to play," Shaw said. "All three still need to be evaluated."

....
"If we're not fully manned it's ridiculously difficult," Shaw said. "If we can get Henry back, if we can get our guys some rest, guys that have been fighting through stuff, we'll give ourselves a chance the way we've been playing defense the last couple of weeks. But you have to be healthy and you have to be in position or these guys make you look bad." -

Re: Status of Injuries for Oregon Game - Oasis - 10-30-2013

Last night the Pac 12 channel replayed the 2007 victory over USC with player, coach, fan and journalist interviews thrown in.  If our 2007 team could go down to the Coliseum and win that game, our 2013 team can beat Oregon.  Stanford is all about optimism and beating the odds.  So we do it again.  Who knows, maybe De'Anthony Thomas won't play either -- not that it matters much.
